What a bachelor’s degree in the UK looks like

The award is the Bachelor's degree with honours (BA (Hons), BSc (Hons), BEng (Hons), LLB (Hons); MA (Hons) in Scotland). It runs 3 to 4 years: three is the norm in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, four in Scotland, and four wherever the degree adds a placement year, a year abroad or a foundation year. Medicine and dentistry run five to six. Teaching starts in September; a few post-1992 universities and pathway colleges also run a January start, which is why the intake list reads September, January (some).

Recognition abroad is simple. The honours degree sits at FHEQ level 6 and carries 360 UK credits, counted as 180 ECTS, so European master’s admissions read it without conversion. The UK recognises 304 institutions and enrolled 685,565 international students in 2024/25, 37,155 of them from Nigeria.

Teaching is in English throughout, and every university in the table below offers its bachelor’s catalogue in English. You will never hunt for an English-taught programme in the UK; you will be tested on your English instead.

Can you enter with WASSCE, KCSE, NSC or the Bac?

It depends on the certificate, not the country. Direct entry to year 1 is open to GCE A Level and its grade-for-grade equivalents: the Zimbabwe GCE Advanced Level and the Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education are marked against A Level, and the South African National Senior Certificate is accepted directly — Edinburgh sets a four-subject rule excluding Life Orientation, and Manchester maps NSC results onto A-level grade bands.

The other certificates do not reach year 1 alone. WASSCE and SSCE (Nigeria, Ghana), KCSE (Kenya), the ECZ School Certificate (Zambia), Thanaweya Amma (Egypt) and the Moroccan Baccalauréat all sit below A Level for admissions. Edinburgh requires WAEC and KCSE holders to complete a foundation year and does not accept the Moroccan Baccalauréat at all; Leeds does not accept KCSE; Manchester requires Nigerian applicants to take an integrated foundation year, an INTO Manchester or NCUK programme, or three A Levels or the IB. Egypt’s Certificate of Nile International Secondary Education level 3 is the one national exception treated as A Level. Glasgow is the outlier the other way, mapping WAEC and WASSCE grades directly onto A-level bands.

If your certificate is on the second list, you are choosing between three bridges, not arguing about grades. The International Foundation Year — offered either as a university-run or partner-college foundation programme, or as an integrated foundation year (Year 0) inside a four-year UCAS degree takes 9 months at £16,995–26,000 per year. GCE A Levels or the IB taken at home take 24 months and are accepted by every UK university. One completed year of a home-country bachelor’s degree is accepted for year 1 entry at Salford.

There is no central ruling. UK ENIC (via university) issues Statements of Comparability, which compare level but not grades or subjects, so each university decides for itself. How much a bachelor’s costs in the UK

There is one price, not two. The UK has no public/private tuition split of the European kind: mainstream universities charge international undergraduates £11,400–38,000 per year, and alternative providers such as the University of Law, Arden and Regent College London charge £12,000–22,000 per year — the cheap end of the market, not the expensive one. Medicine is billed separately at £45,000–70,000 per year. The home fee cap does not apply to you, and fees are set per academic year, never per semester.

Where you live moves the total as much as what you study. The national band is £1,171–1,529 per month, the Home Office maintenance figure, but university-published budgets run from £710–870 per month in Coventry to £1,260–2,340 per month in London, where rent alone is £1,080–1,400 per month. Add the visa at £558 and the health surcharge at £776 per year.

A realistic first year outside London is one tuition line plus twelve months at something like Sheffield’s £1,030–1,420 per month, and the visa makes you prove £10,539–13,761 of it in advance — £1,171/£1,529 per month × up to 9 months + first-year fees. English requirements for a bachelor’s

The national floor at bachelor’s level is IELTS 6, and the universities in our table sit between that and IELTS 7.5. Birmingham, Leeds and Nottingham ask 6. Durham, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Imperial, Manchester, Sheffield, Southampton and Warwick ask 6.5. Bristol, King’s, LSE and UCL ask 7, and Oxford and Cambridge 7.5.

Behind the university’s number sits the visa rule: degree-level study requires CEFR B2 in all four components, proved by a Secure English Language Test from a UKVI-approved provider taken within two years — unless your university holds Student sponsor track record status and assesses your English itself, recording it on the CAS. Most do.

A school English grade often replaces the test entirely: Sheffield accepts WASSCE English at grade C or above, and Birmingham accepts WAEC SSCE grade C6 or above. The test-free routes are listed on studying in the UK without IELTS.

Universities to look at for a bachelor’s

University of Glasgow, Glasgow. The exception on this list for West African applicants: WAEC and WASSCE grades map directly onto A-level bands for direct undergraduate entry. Ranked #80 (QS 2027), fees £27,720–62,730 per year, IELTS 6.5.

University of Birmingham, Birmingham. The lowest English bar here at IELTS 6, met by a WAEC SSCE grade. Fees £25,320–32,160 per year and living costs £1,270–1,380 per month.

University of Sheffield, Sheffield. Fees £25,000–32,100 per year, IELTS 6.5, application fee free, and WASSCE English accepted in place of the test.

University of Southampton, Southampton. The lowest published fee band on this list, £24,400–34,100 per year, at IELTS 6.5. WASSCE and NECO route through a foundation year first.

University of Leeds, Leeds. Fees £27,300–53,900 per year and IELTS 6, but KCSE is not accepted for direct entry, so Kenyan applicants start with the foundation year.

University of Nottingham, Nottingham. #97 (QS 2027), fees £26,200–34,800 per year, IELTS 6; WASSCE holders need a foundation programme.

University of Manchester, Manchester. #40 (QS 2027) and fees £27,800–37,800 per year, with an application fee of £60. Nigerian applicants enter through an integrated foundation year, INTO Manchester or NCUK.

University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh. #35 (QS 2027), fees £31,100–40,900 per year fixed for the whole programme, IELTS 6.5. It takes the NSC directly and sends WASSCE and KCSE to a foundation year. Profiles of the rest are on our UK universities page.

How to apply for a bachelor’s in the UK

1. Check your certificate against the route before you shortlist anything. A Levels, ZIMSEC A Level, UACE, the IB and, at most universities, the NSC go straight to year 1; WASSCE, KCSE, ECZ, Thanaweya Amma and the Moroccan Baccalauréat do not.
2. Fix the bridge if you need one: a foundation year of 9 months at £16,995–26,000 per year, A Levels at home over 24 months, or an NCUK year at a centre in Abuja, Lagos, Port Harcourt, Accra or Nairobi.
3. Build one application on UCAS (undergraduate) at https://www.ucas.com/: up to five courses, one personal statement, one school reference.
4. Submit by 13 January 2027, 18:00 UK time (UCAS equal-consideration deadline, 2027 entry); 15 October 2026 for all Oxford/Cambridge courses and most medicine, dentistry and veterinary medicine/science courses at any university.
5. Settle English early — a test booking, or written confirmation that your school English grade is accepted.
6. Accept your firm offer, pay the deposit the university asks for, and wait for the CAS. An invalid or withdrawn CAS is one of the commonest refusal grounds.
7. Hold £10,539–13,761 for the full 28 days before you apply, using 28-day bank statements or official sponsor letter.

After the bachelor’s: master’s or work?

The Graduate Route gives bachelor’s graduates 18 months to work or look for work, at £937 plus the health surcharge, with no job offer or sponsor needed. Read the date rule carefully: the two-year version applies only to Graduate Route applications made on or before 31 December 2026, and 18 months from 1 January 2027, so a 2027/28 starter gets 18. During the degree you may work 20 hours/week in term and Full-time in holidays, with no permit (no).
