Study in Hungary from Africa in 2027/28

Hungary's public universities charge €3,000–8,000 per year for a bachelor's, teach international students in English at every level, and already host 6,029 African students. Living costs and insurance sit on top of tuition. The catch comes after graduation: the job-search permit lasts 9 months and cannot be extended.

Why study in Hungary?

Hungary is in the EU and the Schengen Area, and it teaches its international programmes in English rather than in the national language. That is the practical difference from Germany or France: no preparatory year of German or French, and no APS certificate to obtain before you apply. Your documents still need an apostille, and recognition is done by the university together with the Hungarian Equivalence Centre rather than by a separate pre-screening office.

The price sits between Central Europe and the West. A public bachelor’s runs €3,000–8,000 per year, a master’s €5,000–8,000 per year, and living costs €500–600 per month outside the capital. The system is big enough to have room: 64 recognised institutions and 43,653 international students in 2025/26, of whom 6,029 are African — 13.2% of the total. Nigeria sends the most at 1,167 students, then Kenya at 521, Ghana at 378 and South Africa at 255. You will not be the first from your country.

Two catches decide most cases. There is no free public option, so a self-funded student pays full fees every year, and the one route to a funded place — Stipendium Hungaricum — is closed to Zambia and Zimbabwe. The second is what happens at the end: 9 months on a job-search permit, not extendable, with student years excluded from the count toward permanent residence. Since 1 January 2024 a spouse or child cannot get a residence permit attached to your study permit.

How much does it cost to study in Hungary?

Every non-EU student pays tuition, and the price is set by the institution rather than by a national scale. Public universities charge €3,000–8,000 per year for a bachelor’s and €5,000–8,000 per year for a master’s. Private institutions ask €5,000–9,800 per year and €5,000–9,000 per year. Medicine in English is a separate market at US$16,900–20,900 per year.

Check the unit before you budget. There is no national semester or registration charge, but many universities bill per semester and some bill in dollars: Semmelweis quotes medicine at US$10,450 per semester, Debrecen at US$16,900 per year and Szeged in euro at €15,800 per year. Application fees are charged university by university: €100 at MATE, US$150 at Debrecen, US$400 at Semmelweis.

Living costs turn on the city. The national band is €500–600 per month. Budapest runs €600–900 per month, with a room in a shared flat at €130–335 per month. The published university figures elsewhere are not all lower — Debrecen states €700–750 per month and Szeged €700–800 per month — while Miskolc sits at €450–600 per month. Health insurance is compulsory and a private student policy costs about €300 per year.

Budget the first year as one year of tuition, twelve months of living costs, €300 per year of insurance and €110 for the residence permit, before flights. City-by-city figures are on our Hungary cost of study page.

Universities in Hungary

Hungary has 64 recognised higher-education institutions. The ones that matter to an African applicant are the large public universities and the two technical ones, because they hold almost all the English-taught places. No Hungarian institution sits inside the global top 500 in the QS ranking, so choose on programme, price and city rather than on name.

The University of Debrecen has the widest English catalogue — 36 bachelor’s and 42 master’s programmes — teaches medicine in English and is ranked #563 (QS 2026). Semmelweis University is the medical specialist: 37.49% of its students are international, it is ranked 251–300 (QS 2026), and it admits on its own written entrance exam rather than on a fixed English band.

Eötvös Loránd University is the largest general university at 35,000 students, with fees from €2,000–4,300 per semester. Budapest University of Technology and Economics is the engineering flagship, with 13 English bachelor’s and 23 English master’s and an entry bar of IELTS 5.

The cheap end is where most self-funded students should look. MATE at Gödöllő charges €1,500–2,500 per semester across 13 English bachelor’s programmes, the University of Szeged starts at €1,800–3,500 per semester, and the University of Miskolc at €2,400–3,000 per semester. The University of Pécs is the only one in our dataset that publishes what it wants from African school certificates: six WASSCE or NECO subjects including English and Maths at A1–C6, or a KCSE mean grade of C+. Student visa & proof of funds

You need a Residence permit for studies (applied abroad). You apply from home and the same application produces the entry visa. The fee is €110, and a decision takes 6 to 9 weeks — start when you have the offer, not when you have the flight.

Where you file depends on your country. The Hungarian embassies in Abuja, Accra and Pretoria take applications directly; Nairobi and Cairo run through VFS Global; Morocco goes to the consular office in Rabat. Uganda is served through Nairobi, and Zambia and Zimbabwe through Pretoria. Biometrics are taken at submission. Tuberculosis screening happens after you arrive: a medical within two weeks of landing, including a chest X-ray, a blood test and HIV and hepatitis B and C screening.

Hungary publishes no fixed proof-of-funds sum, which makes the money file the part of the application most likely to fail. Evidence is accepted as a bank statement, a sponsor letter or a scholarship award letter, and the authority decides whether it covers living costs, accommodation, healthcare and return travel. The stated refusal grounds are false or forged documents, insufficient means, and no genuine link between you and the programme you named.

Comprehensive health insurance is compulsory. Immigration sets no language level of its own — the university does, and the national floor is IELTS 5.5 for a bachelor’s and 6 for a master’s. See Hungary student visa requirements and what proof of funds really means.

Working & staying after study

You can work 30 hours/week during the study period without a separate work permit, and 90 days (or 66 working days) full-time per year in the breaks. That limit comes from the 2023 immigration act and has not been revised for the 2026–2028 window. The statutory minimum wage is HUF 322,800 per month from January 2026, with a further rise expected by government decree around December 2026, so part-time work covers food and transport rather than tuition.

After graduating you can apply for a Residence permit for job search, worth 9 months after a bachelor’s, a master’s or a doctorate, and it cannot be extended. Time on a student permit does not count toward the residence years for permanent residence. Be honest with yourself about language: the degree is in English, but outside IT and the multinational service centres, employers interview and work in Hungarian.

Scholarships for African students

Hungary has two national schemes. Stipendium Hungaricum is the government one and the only realistic route to a fully funded place: applicants from Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Egypt, South Africa and Morocco are eligible, Uganda is eligible on restricted terms, and Zambia and Zimbabwe are absent from the partner list altogether. Applications go through the government portal at https://stipendiumhungaricum.hu/, not through the university.

Timing decides whether you can apply at all. The published position is: SH 2026/27 cycle closed 15 Jan 2026 (for Sept 2026 start); 2027/28 cycle not yet published as of 2026-09-08 (expect ~mid-Jan 2027); self-funded rolling to ~June. Prepare the file — transcripts, apostille, English certificate, medical — before the call opens, because the window is short.

Erasmus Mundus funds joint master’s degrees and is open to all nine of our countries. Outside those two, there is no national fee-waiver programme; any discount is set programme by programme, so ask the admissions office directly. Detail on both: Hungary scholarships for African students and our Stipendium Hungaricum guide.

Who Hungary suits — and who it doesn’t

Hungary suits you if you want an English-taught EU degree at a published price and you can pay it. Medicine, dentistry and pharmacy applicants get the clearest deal: four universities teach them in English at US$16,900–20,900 per year, and entry is decided by an entrance exam rather than by school-leaving grades alone.

Engineering, IT and business students on a budget do better outside Budapest — MATE at €1,500–2,500 per semester and Szeged at €1,800–3,500 per semester cost a fraction of the private-university band. If your grades are strong and you hold a Nigerian, Ghanaian, Kenyan, Egyptian, South African or Moroccan passport, Stipendium Hungaricum is worth a year of preparation.

It suits you less if you need a tuition-free degree, if you are bringing a spouse or children, or if the point of the move is long-term settlement in Europe. Nine months of job-search time and no credit toward permanent residence make Hungary a place to study, not a place to settle.

What works in your favour

  • English-taught degrees run at every level: Debrecen alone lists 36 bachelor’s and 42 master’s programmes in English.
  • The African cohort is established, not experimental: 6,029 African students among 43,653 internationals in 2025/26, including 1,167 Nigerians and 521 Kenyans.
  • Language entry is reachable: the floor is IELTS 5.5 for bachelor’s and 6 for master’s, and BME accepts 5.
  • Applying costs little: €100 at the agriculture university and US$150 at Debrecen.
  • You may work 30 hours/week in term and 90 days (or 66 working days) full-time per year in the holidays, at a minimum wage of HUF 322,800 per month.

The honest downsides

  • Nobody studies free. A self-funded student pays €3,000–8,000 per year at a public university or €5,000–9,800 per year at a private one, every year of the degree.
  • The stay-back is 9 months, not extendable, and your student years are excluded from the count toward permanent residence.
  • Family cannot follow you. Since 1 January 2024 a spouse or child cannot obtain a residence permit attached to your study permit.
  • Nothing is published on your odds. There are no nationality-level refusal statistics for study permits and no proof-of-funds figure to hit, so you cannot know in advance whether your file is strong enough.
  • Fee units differ between universities. Some bill per semester and some per year, some in dollars and some in euro — a medicine quote of US$10,450 per semester is roughly double that across a year.

Our core guidance is free: shortlisting universities against your certificate and your budget, telling you whether Stipendium Hungaricum is open to your country, checking apostille and translation before anything is submitted, and building the funding evidence the consulate actually reads. We are paid a commission by the universities we place students with. If you want us to run the whole application, Premium Placement is a paid option. We never sell guaranteed admission or a guaranteed visa.

Frequently asked questions

A public bachelor's costs €3,000–8,000 per year and a master's €5,000–8,000 per year, with medicine in English at US$16,900–20,900 per year. Add living costs of €500–600 per month, about €300 per year for private health insurance and €110 for the residence permit. Private universities charge €5,000–9,800 per year.

No. This is the most common misunderstanding about Hungary, which is often compared with Germany. Every non-EU student pays tuition, at €3,000–8,000 per year for a public bachelor's, for every year of the degree. The only fully funded route is Stipendium Hungaricum, the government scholarship, and it is not open to every country.

Yes. Semmelweis, Debrecen, Szeged and Pécs teach medicine in English, at US$16,900–20,900 per year. Expect a written entrance exam in biology and chemistry rather than admission on school grades alone. Check the billing unit before you budget: Semmelweis quotes US$10,450 per semester, which is roughly double that over a full year.

There is no fixed statutory sum, and anyone quoting one is guessing. The authority assesses a bank statement, a sponsor letter or a scholarship award letter against your living costs, accommodation, healthcare and return travel. Insufficient means is one of the stated refusal grounds, so document where the money comes from as well as the balance.

Yes, and you do not need a separate work permit. The limit is 30 hours/week during the study period and 90 days (or 66 working days) full-time per year full-time in the breaks. The statutory minimum wage is HUF 322,800 per month from January 2026. Most jobs outside IT require Hungarian.

Yes, briefly. The Residence permit for job search gives you 9 months after a bachelor's, a master's or a doctorate, and it cannot be extended. You apply from inside Hungary before your study permit expires. Time spent as a student does not count toward the residence years needed for permanent residence.

Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Egypt, South Africa and Morocco are eligible. Uganda is eligible on restricted terms. Zambia and Zimbabwe are not on the partner list, so students from those two countries should look at Erasmus Mundus, which is open to all nine of our countries, or plan on self-funding.

The Stipendium Hungaricum call for 2027/28 has not been published yet. Going by the last cycle, expect the announcement around autumn 2026, the portal to open in mid-November and the deadline around mid-January 2027. The minimum wage of HUF 322,800 per month is also due to rise by decree around December 2026, which lifts the state health-insurance premium with it.
