Most Egyptian families self-fund, often through diaspora support, while a few win a government mission (bi’tha) or an external scholarship. With the Egyptian pound floated and still volatile, getting the cost and visa right matters more than ever. Below we compare the seven European destinations Egyptians actually choose, give costs in pounds, link the scholarships you can win, and show how to avoid agent scams.

Why study in Europe from Egypt?

Egyptians have long looked to the Gulf and the US, but mainland Europe is rising fast for one reason: value. As tuition and living costs climb elsewhere, Europe offers recognised degrees at a fraction of the price.

• Free or low tuition. Germany’s public universities charge €0 tuition. Poland, Hungary, Cyprus and Malta cost a fraction of US or UK fees.
• No APS for Egypt. Germany’s APS certificate is required only for China, Vietnam and India — not Egypt. Your credentials are verified through uni-assist (a VPD) and the Anabin database, with the German Embassy Cairo running its own document legalization check.
• Documents go through legalization, not apostille. Egypt is not in the Apostille Convention (as of June 2026), so every academic and civil document needs traditional consular legalization — Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, then the destination embassy. Never accept an “apostille” shortcut for Egypt, and re-verify the rule each cycle.
• You can stay and work. Germany gives graduates an 18-month residence permit to seek related work; Ireland’s Third Level Graduate Programme lets master’s graduates stay up to 24 months.
• Real demand for your skills. Egyptians study Engineering, Computer Science and AI, Medicine and health sciences, and Business — all in shortage across Europe.

The honest catch: Arabic is Egypt’s official language, so IELTS or TOEFL is usually required (a Medium-of-Instruction waiver is possible if your prior study was fully English-medium, per the receiving university). And Europe rewards careful applicants — get the credential check, funds and visa story right and your odds are good; cut corners and you risk refusal. That is the whole reason this site exists.

Best destinations from Egypt

Lead options: if budget is your top concern, start with Germany (free tuition). If you want English-taught study with strong work rights, start with Ireland. Cyprus, Hungary and Poland are the lowest-tuition EU routes.

⚠️ One warning on Cyprus: only the Republic of Cyprus (EU) is in scope here. Many agents marketing “Cyprus” push TRNC (“North Cyprus”) schools, which are not in the EU. Our Cyprus from Egypt guide covers only recognised EU institutions. Note too that Cyprus and Ireland are EU but not Schengen.

How much does it cost to study abroad from Egypt?

Costs swing widely by destination — and the pound’s volatility (it floated in March 2024 with a steep devaluation, and remains a managed float) makes every estimate a moving target. Re-check the rate before you transfer money. As a rough guide:

Pound figures use a rate of €1 ≈ £E 56.4 and £1 ≈ £E 65.4 as at June 2026 — the pound is highly volatile, so re-check before you transfer. Because of FX shortages and currency controls (eased after the 2024 float but not gone), proof-of-funds and tuition transfers remain a real friction point — tuition transfers are allowed with a university invoice and enrolment proof. Scholarships for Egyptian students

Most Egyptian students self-fund, but a competitive scholarship or a government mission can transform the cost. Awards open to Egyptians include:

• Stipendium Hungaricum (Hungary) — full tuition waiver, monthly stipend, accommodation contribution and medical insurance. Egypt is a partner with around 200 nominations a year, via a dual application through the Egyptian Ministry and the SH portal.
• Chevening (UK FCDO) — fully funded one-year master’s; Egypt eligible.
• DAAD (Germany) — mainly master’s, PhD and research awards, with a DAAD regional office in Cairo (programmes include EPOS and GERLS).
• Egyptian Government Missions / Bi’that (بعثات) — run by the Cultural Affairs & Missions Sector of the Ministry of Higher Education; full funding for MSc/PhD/research abroad with a return-to-serve bond, supervised by Egyptian Cultural Bureaus abroad.

Visa & application process — the overview

Every corridor differs, but the shape is the same. From Egypt you will usually:

1. Legalize and translate your credentials. Egypt is not in the Apostille Convention, so documents need consular legalization (Egyptian MoFA → destination embassy), never an apostille. Germany also uses uni-assist (VPD) + Anabin; the UK uses a UK ENIC Statement of Comparability; Poland may require nostrification.
2. Get an admission letter from a recognised university. Note that Thanaweya Amma alone does not give direct bachelor entry in Germany (you need a Studienkolleg after one year of Egyptian university, or two years of Egyptian study), and the UK usually wants a Foundation year for school-leavers. The new Egyptian Baccalaureate is phasing in from 2025/26.
3. Prove your funds. Show verifiable money — e.g. Germany’s blocked account (~€11,904), or several months of bank statements. Avoid sudden large deposits, which missions scrutinise. Poland will not accept Egyptian bank statements — funds must sit in a non-Egyptian account.
4. Sort English proof. Arabic is official, so IELTS or TOEFL is usually required. An MOI waiver is possible where your prior education was fully English-medium, at the receiving university’s discretion.
5. Apply for the visa at the right centre — TLScontact for Germany; VFS Global Cairo for the UK, Ireland, Malta, Cyprus and Hungary; and directly at the Polish Embassy Cairo (no VFS) for Poland.

A word on outcomes, honestly: the widely-shared 18.41% Egypt Schengen rejection figure (2024) is for short-stay visas, not study — student permits are national long-stay visas decided separately, so do not panic over that number. The UK’s study route runs at roughly 94% globally (no separate Egypt study figure is published). Egypt is, however, a high-scrutiny origin: forged documents, weak sponsor credibility or unexplained deposits can trigger refusal. One genuinely useful quirk — the UK requires no TB test for Egypt (Egypt is absent from the gov.uk TB-screening list), unlike most other African origins.

Avoiding agent scams

Egypt’s study-abroad market has its share of dishonest agents — fake admissions, “guaranteed visa” promises, and upfront “scholarship” fees that vanish. Honest signals to demand:

• Real approval rates, not “98% guaranteed.” No one can guarantee a visa.
• No fee to apply for a genuine scholarship or a university place.
• Documents you can verify — and an agent who refuses to submit anything false. Forged documents are the largest detected-fraud category in this sector.
• A registered, contactable business you can trace.
