Study in Europe from Nigeria

You can study abroad from Nigeria in Europe far more affordably than in the UK, US or Canada. Germany charges no tuition at public universities, and Ireland teaches in English with strong work rights. You apply with your WAEC/NECO results and degree, show verifiable funds, and choose a corridor that matches your budget and goals.

Most Nigerian families now self-fund (the federal foreign-scholarship scheme was discontinued in 2025), so getting the cost and visa right matters more than ever. Below we compare the seven European destinations Nigerians actually choose, give costs in Naira, link the scholarships you can still win, and show how to avoid agent scams.

Why study in Europe from Nigeria?

The “japa” route does not have to mean the UK, US or Canada — and increasingly it doesn’t. As those countries tighten rules (the UK banned most taught-master’s dependants from January 2024), Nigerians are turning to mainland Europe for one reason: value.

  • Free or low tuition. Germany’s public universities charge €0 tuition. Poland, Hungary, Cyprus and Malta cost a fraction of UK or US fees.
  • English is enough — often. English is Nigeria’s official language. Many UK and Irish universities accept WAEC/NECO English (Grade C6) or a Medium-of-Instruction letter instead of IELTS, especially at master’s level — though some courses and top-tier universities still require it.
  • No APS for Nigeria. Germany’s APS certificate is required only for China, Vietnam and India — not Nigeria. Your credentials are verified through uni-assist, Anabin and WAEC/NECO scratch-card checks instead.
  • You can stay and work. Germany gives graduates an 18-month residence permit to seek related work; Ireland’s Third Level Graduate Programme lets master’s graduates stay up to 24 months.
  • Real demand for your skills. Nigerians study Medicine, Nursing and health sciences, IT (AI, cybersecurity, data science), Engineering and Business — all in shortage across Europe.

The honest catch: Europe rewards careful applicants. Get the credential check, funds and visa story right and your odds are good; cut corners and you risk refusal. That is the whole reason this site exists.

Best destinations from Nigeria

These are the seven European corridors Nigerian students choose most. Each link goes to a full money page with that route’s exact fees, proof-of-funds, visa centre and refusal context — in Naira.

Destination Why Nigerians pick it Tuition (guide) Visa applied at Full corridor guide
Germany Free public tuition; strong job market; no APS for Nigeria €0 + ~€100–400/sem Consulate Lagos / Embassy Abuja Study in Germany from Nigeria
Ireland English-taught; 2-year stay-back; WAEC English often accepted Paid (varies) AVATS + VFS, decided in Abuja Study in Ireland from Nigeria
UK #3 destination for Nigerians; ~90% study-visa grant rate Paid (high) VFS Lagos (Ikeja/VI) & Abuja Study in the UK from Nigeria
Malta English-speaking EU; smaller, affordable Paid (mid) VFS Lagos/Abuja → Identità Study in Malta from Nigeria
Cyprus (EU) Affordable English degrees; warm climate Paid (low–mid) High Commission Lagos / Abuja Study in Cyprus from Nigeria
Hungary Low cost; Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship route Paid (low) Embassy Abuja (Enter Hungary) Study in Hungary from Nigeria
Poland Among the cheapest in the EU; growing options Paid (low) Embassy Abuja (e-konsulat) Study in Poland from Nigeria

Lead options: if budget is your top concern, start with Germany (free tuition). If you want English-taught study with strong work rights, start with Ireland. Cyprus, Hungary and Poland are the lowest-tuition EU routes.

⚠️ One warning on Cyprus: only the Republic of Cyprus (EU) is in scope here. Many agents marketing “Cyprus from Nigeria” push TRNC (“North Cyprus”) schools, which are not in the EU. Our Cyprus from Nigeria guide covers only recognised EU institutions.

How much does it cost to study abroad from Nigeria?

Costs swing widely by destination — and the Naira’s volatility (it floated in 2023 and a dual official/parallel market persists) makes every estimate a moving target. Re-check the rate before you transfer money. As a rough guide:

Cost item Amount ≈ Naira (₦) Notes
Germany — tuition €0 ₦0 Public universities; small semester fee only
Germany — blocked account €11,904/yr ~₦18.75M Proof of funds; released to you monthly (~€992/mo)
Germany — student visa fee €75 ~₦117,375 Waived for funded scholarship holders
UK — student visa fee £558 ~₦1.0M Plus the Immigration Health Surcharge (£776/yr)
Ireland — visa fee €60 single / €100 multi ~₦93,900 / ₦156,500 Plus VFS service fee
FX reference €1 ≈ ₦1,575 Parallel market higher; £1 ≈ ₦1,807 — volatile, re-check before transfer

Naira figures use a rate of €1 ≈ ₦1,575 and £1 ≈ ₦1,807 as at June 2026 — the naira is highly volatile, so re-pull the rate before you transfer money. Many families fund through domiciliary (FX) accounts to show verifiable funds, because naira controls and swings complicate proof-of-funds. For exact, current numbers on each route, open that destination’s corridor guide above.

Scholarships for Nigerian students

Federal funding has shrunk: the government discontinued the overseas/BEA foreign-scholarship scheme in 2025, and NELFUND student loans cover Nigerian institutions only — not study abroad. So self-funding plus a competitive scholarship is the realistic plan. Awards still open to Nigerians include:

  • PTDF Overseas Postgraduate Scholarship — Federal (oil & gas sector); MSc/PhD in the UK, Germany, France, Malaysia; covers tuition, flights, living costs. Needs a 2:1 (or 2:2 + experience) and completed NYSC.
  • Chevening (UK FCDO) — fully funded one-year master’s; Nigeria eligible.
  • Commonwealth Scholarships (UK) — Nigeria is a Commonwealth member; master’s and PhD.
  • Stipendium Hungaricum (Hungary) — tuition waiver, stipend and accommodation; requires nomination by the Nigerian sending authority (confirm the current cycle’s nomination process before you apply).

See deadlines, eligibility and how to apply on our scholarships for Nigerian students page. Be sceptical of any “scholarship” that asks you to pay a fee to apply — that is a classic scam signal.

Visa & application process — the overview

Every corridor differs, but the shape is the same. From Nigeria you will usually:

  1. Verify your credentials. Germany via uni-assist + Anabin + WAEC/NECO scratch-card; Poland needs superlegalisation (Nigeria is not in the Hague Apostille Convention); Malta uses MQRIC, Cyprus KYSATS, Hungary OH-MEIK.
  2. Get an admission letter from a recognised university.
  3. Prove your funds. Show verifiable money — e.g. Germany’s blocked account (~€11,904), or 6-month bank statements for Ireland/Poland. Ireland rejects microfinance, mortgage and thrift/”esusu” statements.
  4. Sort English proof. Often WAEC/NECO English or an MOI letter for the UK/Ireland; IELTS/TOEFL for English-taught German programmes; B2 German for German-taught.
  5. Apply for the visa at the right centre — VFS Global (UK, Ireland, Malta), the German Consulate Lagos / Embassy Abuja, or the Polish/Hungarian embassies in Abuja.

A word on outcomes, honestly: the UK study-visa grant rate for Nigerians is about 90% (roughly 1 in 10 refused). The widely-shared “45.9% Schengen rejection” figure is for short-stay visas, not study — student permits are national long-stay visas decided separately, so do not panic over that number. Nigeria is, however, a high-scrutiny origin: forged documents or an undisclosed prior refusal can trigger refusal with no appeal and a possible 5-year ban (Ireland operates zero-tolerance).

Avoiding agent scams

Nigeria’s study-abroad market is full of dishonest agents — fake admissions, “guaranteed visa” promises, and upfront “scholarship” fees that vanish. Honest signals to demand:

  • Real approval rates, not “98% guaranteed.” No one can guarantee a visa.
  • No fee to apply for a genuine scholarship or a university place.
  • Documents you can verify — and an agent who refuses to submit anything false.
  • A registered, contactable business you can trace.

Our guide on how to spot a fake agent lists the exact red flags and the questions to ask before you pay anyone a kobo.

Frequently asked questions

Not entirely free, but close in Germany: public universities charge €0 tuition, so you mainly cover living costs and a one-off blocked account (~€11,904). Combined with a scholarship like PTDF or Chevening, the total cost of studying abroad from Nigeria can drop sharply.

Germany is unbeatable on tuition (free at public universities). For paid tuition, Poland and Hungary are among the cheapest in the EU, followed by Cyprus. The UK and Ireland cost the most. Always compare total cost — tuition plus living plus visa — not tuition alone.

Often no. Because English is Nigeria's official language, many UK and Irish universities accept WAEC/NECO English (Grade C6) or a Medium-of-Instruction letter, especially for master's degrees. Top-tier universities (such as Oxford, Cambridge and Imperial) and most German English-taught programmes still ask for IELTS or TOEFL, so confirm the rule with each university.

No. Germany's APS is required only for applicants from China, Vietnam and India — not Nigeria. Your qualifications are verified through uni-assist, the Anabin database and WAEC/NECO scratch-card checks instead.

The main options are PTDF (postgraduate, oil & gas fields), Chevening and Commonwealth Scholarships (UK), and Stipendium Hungaricum (Hungary). The federal overseas/BEA scheme was discontinued in 2025, and NELFUND loans cover Nigerian institutions only — so most students self-fund plus one scholarship.

Never trust "guaranteed visa" or "98% success" claims, never pay a fee to apply for a genuine scholarship, and only submit documents you can verify. Use a registered, traceable consultant. Our spot-a-fake-agent guide lists every red flag.
