Study in Europe from Africa

You can study in Europe from Africa for far less than the UK, US or Canada — and sometimes for free. Public universities in Germany charge no tuition; Ireland and Malta teach in English; Hungary and Poland combine low fees with scholarships. The best starting points are Germany (free tuition), Ireland (English-native), Hungary (scholarships) and Malta (all-English) — compared below so you can match a country to your budget.

This is our top hub. Below: why Europe beats the usual destinations, a country-by-country comparison table, the cheapest and the English-taught options, scholarships, and how to choose and apply — with honest figures, not sales talk.

Why study in Europe (vs the UK, US or Canada)?

For most African students, Europe is the smartest-value route to a respected degree:

  • It can cost almost nothing. Public universities in Germany charge €0 tuition even to non-EU students — you pay only a small semester fee. No other major English-language destination comes close.
  • Lower fees almost everywhere. Where Europe does charge, fees are usually €2,000–€15,000/year — well below typical UK international fees of roughly £20,000–£45,000/year or comparable US/Canada costs.
  • English-taught degrees exist. Ireland and Malta are English-speaking countries; Hungary and Poland run hundreds of English-taught programmes, including English-medium medicine.
  • Real work and stay-back rights. Most European destinations let you work part-time during study and stay on to find a job after you graduate (Germany gives 18 months; Ireland one to two years).
  • A genuine African community. Africans already make up a meaningful share of international students across Europe — you won’t be the first from your country.

The honest trade-offs: visa scrutiny is real (especially for Schengen countries), some destinations teach bachelor’s degrees mainly in the local language, and post-study rights vary a lot. We flag every catch on the destination pages so nothing surprises you later.

Best European countries for African students (comparison)

Here are seven destinations we cover, with the headline facts that decide most choices. Figures are approximate per-year international (non-EU) costs — always confirm them on the university’s own page before you rely on them, because fees and rules change every cycle.

Country Approx. tuition / year (intl) Language of teaching Work while studying Post-study stay
Germany €0 at public universities (semester fee ~€100–400) German for most bachelor’s; English mostly at master’s 140 full / 280 half days a year 18-month job-seeker permit
Ireland ~€9,850–€60,000 (most arts/business €10k–25k) English (native) 20 hrs/week term-time 1 year (bachelor’s) / 2 years (master’s)
Poland ~€2,000–€6,000 (medicine €15k–17k) Polish or English (broad English choice) No fixed hour limit, no work permit Job-search permit available
Hungary ~€5,300–€7,000 general (medicine ~€15k+) Hungarian or English (broad English choice) Limited part-time Job-search route available
Cyprus ~€6,800+ (private/English-taught) Greek at public bachelor’s; English at private & master’s Limited part-time Master’s/PhD only — bachelor’s get none
Malta ~€8,500–€13,400 (medicine higher) English (official language) 20 hrs/week 12 months post-study
United Kingdom ~£20,000–£45,000 (medicine far higher) English (native) 20 hrs/week term-time Graduate Route 2 years → 18 months from 1 Jan 2027

How to read this table. Cost falls roughly Germany → Poland → Hungary → Cyprus → Malta → Ireland → UK. But the cheapest sticker price isn’t always the best fit: Germany’s bachelor’s degrees are mostly in German, Cyprus gives bachelor’s graduates no stay-back, and Cyprus is not in the Schengen area (a national visa only). Weigh language, work rights and post-study stay together — not tuition alone.

Cheapest ways to study in Europe

If budget is your first concern, three routes stand out:

  1. Germany — free public tuition. You pay no tuition at most public universities, just a semester fee of about €100–400 (two states, Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria’s TUM, charge non-EU fees — confirm per university). Your real cost is living expenses and the blocked account that proves you can fund your stay.
  2. Poland — low fees plus liberal work rights. Most English-taught programmes run about €2,000–€6,000/year, and Poland lets full-time students work without a work permit, so part-time earnings can offset costs.
  3. Hungary — affordable and scholarship-rich. General degrees are roughly €5,300–€7,000/year, and the Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship can cover the lot for eligible students.

English-taught study in Europe

You do not have to speak German, Polish or Greek to study in Europe:

  • Ireland and Malta are English-speaking countries — almost every bachelor’s and master’s is taught and examined in English.
  • Hungary and Poland offer hundreds of English-taught degrees, including English-medium medicine — a major draw for African applicants.
  • Cyprus teaches most English-taught degrees at its private universities and at master’s level; public bachelor’s degrees are largely in Greek.
  • Germany is the exception: most bachelor’s degrees are in German, while English-taught study is concentrated at master’s level (around 1,928 English master’s programmes).

One honest warning on English tests: being from an anglophone country does not automatically waive IELTS. Malta’s University, for example, does not exempt the six African origins we serve by nationality, and the UK’s visa rules treat English separately from your university’s own requirement. Most universities still waive IELTS via your English-taught school grades or a Medium of Instruction letter — but confirm it per university.

Scholarships across Europe

Many African students fund European study with scholarships rather than savings. The biggest fully funded options are:

  • Stipendium Hungaricum (Hungary) — tuition, a monthly stipend and housing, with quotas for 30+ African countries (Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and South Africa qualify; Zimbabwe and Zambia do not).
  • DAAD (Germany) — funded master’s and research scholarships.
  • Erasmus Mundus (EU-wide) — fully funded joint master’s across several countries.
  • Türkiye Scholarships and Poland’s NAWA/Banach — further fully funded routes, with eligibility varying by country.

See our hub of scholarships to study in Europe for the full list, organised by destination and by your nationality, with deadlines and how to apply for each.

How to choose a country — and apply

Work through it in this order:

  1. Set your budget honestly. If you cannot self-fund, lead with Germany (free) and scholarships (Hungary, DAAD, Erasmus Mundus). If you can pay, weigh value against your goals.
  2. Decide on language. Want everything in English now? Ireland and Malta. Open to a German-taught bachelor’s, or aiming for a master’s? Germany opens up. Want English-taught medicine? Hungary or Poland.
  3. Check post-study rights. If staying to work matters, Germany (18 months) and Ireland (1–2 years) lead; avoid a Cyprus bachelor’s if you need stay-back.
  4. Plan the visa early. Schengen countries (Germany, Malta, Hungary, Poland) scrutinise funds and intent; Ireland and the UK have their own proof-of-funds rules; Cyprus issues a national (non-Schengen) permit. Strong, genuine documents matter more than ever.
  5. Apply with clean paperwork. Credential checks differ by country — Germany uses uni-assist, Ireland uses NARIC Ireland, and each has its own steps. We check every document before you submit.

Start with a destination hub: study in Germany, study in Ireland, study in Malta, study in Cyprus, study in Hungary, study in Poland or study in the UK.

Frequently asked questions

There is no single best — it depends on your budget and goals. Germany is best for cost (free public tuition) and stay-back rights; Ireland and Malta are best if you want an all-English degree; Hungary and Poland are best for affordable fees and scholarships. Compare cost, language, work rights and post-study stay together, not tuition alone.

Germany is the main option: public universities charge no tuition to international students, so you pay only a semester fee of about €100–400. Two regions (Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria's TUM) charge non-EU fees, so confirm per university. Scholarships such as Stipendium Hungaricum and DAAD can also make other countries effectively free.

Ireland and Malta are English-speaking countries where almost all degrees are taught in English. Hungary and Poland offer hundreds of English-taught programmes, including English-medium medicine. In Germany, English-taught study is mostly at master's level, while most bachelor's degrees are in German.

It ranges from €0 tuition at German public universities to about €2,000–€6,000/year in Poland, €5,000–€7,000 in Hungary, €6,800+ in Cyprus, €8,500–€13,400 at the University of Malta, and €10,000–€25,000+ in Ireland (where some courses run far higher). The UK is the priciest at roughly £20,000–£45,000/year. Living costs and proof-of-funds requirements are extra.

Often, but not always. Many universities waive IELTS if your previous study was in English (via school grades or a Medium of Instruction letter). Being from an anglophone country does not guarantee a waiver — Malta's University, for example, does not exempt the six African origins by nationality, and visa English rules can differ from a university's own requirement. Confirm per university.
