Why study in Europe from Kenya?

Cost is why most Kenyan families look at Europe before Australia, Canada or the United States. Tuition at Germany’s public universities is free for a bachelor’s and free for a consecutive master’s. Poland charges €2,000–6,500 per year, Hungary €3,000–8,000 per year, and Italy prices public tuition by income and country of origin at €200–4,200 per year. These are established routes, not experiments: of the 23,211 Kenyans studying abroad in 2023, 3,124 were in the UK, 1,130 in Germany and 460 in Hungary.

Language is the second reason. You are taught in English at home, so the UK, Ireland and Malta need no bridging year, and many universities accept KCSE English or a medium-of-instruction letter instead of a test. If a course insists on one, IELTS runs in Nairobi and eight other towns, with TOEFL and PTE also available. Work rights are the third: Germany allows 140 full days or 280 half days per year (≈20 h/week), and graduates get 18 months to find work, or 24 in Ireland after a master’s.

The catch sits in your paperwork rather than your grades: a KCSE certificate alone is an indirect entry qualification in Germany, and Kenya is not a party to the Hague Apostille Convention, so every document travels a legalisation chain before an embassy will accept it.

Best destinations from Kenya

Germany is the cheapest degree if you can handle the language. Public tuition is free; you pay a semester contribution of €100–400 per semester, block €11,904 per year before the visa and pay €75 at TLScontact Nairobi. Most bachelor’s teaching is in German. See study in Germany from Kenya.

The UK is where Kenyans already go — 3,124 of them, the largest group on this list. Teaching is in English, tuition runs £11,400–38,000 per year, the visa is £558 plus a health surcharge of £776 per year, and the Graduate Route gives 18 months. Refusals are low: ≈9.0% (2026). Ireland teaches in English and keeps graduates longest: 24 months on the Third Level Graduate Programme after a master’s. Tuition is €9,850–27,000 per year and living costs €1,200–1,800 per month. Apply early — Minimum 8 weeks from receipt at VFS. See study in Ireland from Kenya.

Hungary is the scholarship route. Public tuition is €3,000–8,000 per year, living costs are the lowest here at €500–600 per month, and students may work 30 hours/week. Kenya holds one of the larger Stipendium Hungaricum allocations. See study in Hungary from Kenya.

Poland has the cheapest paid tuition in the EU at €2,000–6,500 per year, English-taught degrees at large public universities, and No cap for full-time students at qualifying institutions. The visa is the expensive part at €200, cash only, booked through e-konsulat months ahead. See study in Poland from Kenya.

Italy puts Kenyan applicants in its lower fee bands, €200–4,200 per year, with a study visa of €50. English-taught degrees exist, mostly in the north, and pre-enrolment on Universitaly gates the visa. See study in Italy from Kenya.

If budget decides, start with Germany, Poland or Hungary; if English-taught teaching and stay-back decide, start with Ireland or the UK. Malta and Cyprus also teach in English, at €8,500–10,800 per year and €8,970–11,520 per year respectively.

How much does it cost to study abroad from Kenya?

Sort the destinations into three price groups.

Free or near-free public tuition: Germany at free plus €100–400 per semester; Austria at €726.72 per semester; France at €178–2,902 per year; Italy at €200–4,200 per year; Spain at €757–8,186 per year.

Cheap paid tuition: Poland at €2,000–6,500 per year, Hungary at €3,000–8,000 per year, Cyprus at €6,834 per year in the public sector.

English-taught and expensive: the UK at £11,400–38,000 per year, Ireland at €9,850–27,000 per year, Malta at €8,500–10,800 per year.

Two smaller lines still belong in the budget. Health cover is compulsory everywhere, at €1,700–1,760 per year in Germany against €300 per year in Hungary and PLN 670 per year in Poland. Visa fees run from €50 in Italy to €200 in Poland, paid in cash at the mission.

Living costs then reorder that table. Hungary runs €500–600 per month and Poland PLN 1,500–2,500 per month, against €1,200–1,800 per month in Ireland and £1,171–1,529 per month in the UK. Build the first year as tuition, twelve months of living costs, health insurance and the visa fee — then add the proof-of-funds sum, which is money you hold rather than money you spend: €11,904 per year for Germany, €10,179.85 per year for Italy, €10,000 per year for Ireland and £10,539–13,761 for the UK.

Scholarships for Kenyan students

HELB funds study at public and chartered private universities inside the East African Community and has no product for study outside it, Europe included. So the realistic plan is family funding plus one competitive award, and the awards open to Kenyan nationals are wide.

Stipendium Hungaricum is the largest single route: Kenya’s 2026/27 allocation ran to two hundred places, applied for through Tempus Public Foundation with a parallel file to the Ministry of Education in Nairobi. Timing for the next round: SH 2026/27 cycle closed 15 Jan 2026 (for Sept 2026 start); 2027/28 cycle not yet published as of 2026-09-08 (expect ~mid-Jan 2027); self-funded rolling to ~June. Chevening, DAAD, Erasmus Mundus, the Banach programme in Poland, Türkiye Bursları, the Italian Government scheme and Austria’s OeAD grants are all open to Kenyan applicants. Three are open but conditional: Commonwealth Scholarships are restricted, France’s Eiffel programme is restricted and Spain’s MAEC-AECID is restricted, so read each call before you build a plan around it.

Visa & application process — the overview

Your school certificate is the KCSE, awarded by KNEC after 12 years of schooling, with 12-point A–E scale; C+ (7 points) is the degree-entry cut-off. A provisional results slip is accepted for one year only; after that universities want the certificate itself. For Germany the KCSE is an indirect entry qualification, so a school leaver adds a Studienkolleg year or one year at a Kenyan university before the degree; no APS certificate is required from Kenya. Kenyan degrees from accredited universities are generally accepted for master’s entry.

Documents take longer than students expect. Kenya is not in the Hague Apostille Convention, so instead of an apostille you follow Chain legalisation: institution/Ministry of Education verification → Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Legal Dept, via the eCitizen portal) → destination embassy.

The consular map is simple once you see it. TLScontact Nairobi handles Germany and France. VFS Global handles the UK, Ireland, Malta, Hungary and Italy — with UK centres in Nairobi, Mombasa and Eldoret, and Italy in Nairobi and Mombasa. BLS International handles Spain. For a September 2027 start, work backwards from the slowest step: Embassy states approx. 1–2 months for the study visa; up to 3 months in individual cases, Minimum 8 weeks from receipt at VFS and 6–8 weeks (minimum) — so hold your admission letter by spring 2027 and lodge the visa file by June.

Avoiding agent scams

Kenya’s overseas-placement market has a documented fraud record. The Ministry of Education issued a public notice in August 2023 about fake admission letters circulating for overseas placements. In January 2026 the Commission for University Education named twenty unlicensed student-recruitment agencies and sixteen fake universities misleading students on admission, scholarships and visas. A forged-visa placement scheme in Nairobi collected money from more than a thousand families before its operator disappeared, and a county-run overseas scholarship programme diverted other students’ fees, with families still waiting on refunds years later. The Australian High Commission in Nairobi has warned separately about unsolicited “guaranteed visa” offers that demand an upfront fee and impersonate government staff and websites.

Three checks before you pay anyone: confirm the admission on the university’s own domain or applicant portal, refuse any fee charged to apply for a scholarship, and treat a guaranteed visa as proof of fraud, because the decision belongs to the embassy.
