How a PhD works in Poland

Poland runs its doctorates through doctoral schools. The award is Doktor — kształcenie w szkole doktorskiej (doctoral school), and schools of this kind replaced the older studia doktoranckie in 2019. Older advice about paying your way into a Polish doctorate is out of date.

The programme takes 3 to 4 years and starts in October, February. The model is recorded as both: some schools advertise structured programmes with a defined research theme, others admit you to work with one supervisor on a topic you bring. Either way the school admits you by competition, not a professor by private arrangement.

There is no prescribed credit total. The Act sets no ECTS workload for doctoral schools, so progress runs on an individual research plan and a mid-term evaluation about halfway through. Some schools assign credits internally, but the evaluation is the gate: failing it ends the place and the scholarship together.

Whole doctorate in English: yes, at most universities. Doctoral schools may not be run part-time, so this is a full-time commitment for the full three or four years. There is no evening or weekend doctorate in Poland.

How PhDs are funded — and what you are paid

Funding arrives with admission, not from a separate competition. The mechanism is the Stypendium doktoranckie — a statutory monthly scholarship (art. 209) paid to every doctoral-school candidate who does not already hold a doctorate, foreign nationals included, for up to 4 years. Doctoral schools may not be run part-time. The separate extramural route (tryb eksternistyczny) carries no scholarship and a fee of up to three times the professor minimum — PLN 28950 at the University of Warsaw.

The band is PLN 3,570.50–5,500.50 per month gross, set as a share of the professor minimum salary, not by each university. The lower figure applies before the mid-term evaluation, the higher one after it, and ZUS contributions come out of it.

Tuition is free, and that is law, not a waiver: the Act bars doctoral schools from charging for doctoral education and draws no distinction by nationality. A Ghanaian or Zimbabwean candidate pays the same nothing as a Pole; a non-EU master’s student at the same university pays €2,500–7,500 per year.

Neither national scheme funds a doctorate. Banach NAWA covers master, language-course study, and of our nine origin countries only Nigeria and Kenya are eligible at all; Erasmus Mundus funds master programmes, open to all nine. Both sit on our Poland scholarships page and the Banach NAWA guide.

There is no self-funded Polish PhD worth recommending: the extramural route charges a fee, pays nothing and gives none of the structure. Reapply next cycle instead.

Entry requirements for a PhD

You need a master’s — magister or an equivalent second-cycle degree. Doctoral schools admit by open competition under their own rules, so there is no national eligibility list. An APS certificate is not required: no.

Your African master’s is judged by the school itself. Legalisation is required, by apostille for Hague-convention countries and consular legalisation otherwise: yes. Nostrification is the separate recognition procedure for higher-education diplomas, and a school can ask for it where your degree does not map clearly onto Polish levels. Language is set institution by institution. The national floor recorded for master’s entry is IELTS 6; doctoral schools publish their own, and humanities schools often ask for more.

Two things decide most competitions and appear on no certificate list: a proposal that matches what the group is already working on, and a named academic willing to supervise it. Schools test both at interview.

Universities and doctoral schools to look at

Poland has 352 recognised higher education institutions; full profiles sit on our Polish university pages.

The University of Warsaw is the highest-placed in the country at #271 (QS 2026), with English provision recorded as some. Its African Studies and international relations groups fit regional research.

Jagiellonian University in Kraków, #329 (QS 2027), teaches at all levels in English across law, humanities and the sciences. Its medical arm, #303 (QS 2026), runs a tuition-free Doctoral School of Medical and Health Sciences with the statutory stipend, though English there is limited.

Warsaw University of Technology, #504 (QS 2027), and AGH University of Kraków, 761–770 (QS 2027), are the engineering addresses: Warsaw records many English programmes, AGH some, strongest in mining, geology and materials.

Gdańsk University of Technology, 801–850 (QS 2027), states doctoral training as free for EU and non-EU candidates alike, with many English programmes in engineering, electronics and computing.

Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, 731–740 (QS 2027), suits linguistics, law and political science. Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, 1001–1200 (QS 2026), covers chemistry, cognitive science and astronomy in the cheapest city here, at PLN 1,500–2,500 per month.

University of Wrocław, 851–900 (QS 2027), takes law, computer science and biotechnology. Kozminski University in Warsaw is the private contrast, its international doctoral school free for admitted students in management and finance. University of Silesia publishes 0 English doctoral programmes, so plan on Polish there.

How to apply for a PhD in Poland

1. From late 2026 — pick research groups, not universities. Find two or three academics whose current work your master’s connects to, and note which doctoral school each belongs to.
2. Write to them with a short proposal, CV and transcripts, asking whether they will supervise and whether the next competition has a place in your area.
3. Read the rules for each school on your list. Admission is Competitive admission (rekrutacja w drodze konkursu, art. 200) run by each doctoral school; no national portal. Recruitment rules must be published by 31 May of the preceding year.
4. Prepare documents early: legalised diploma and transcript, English evidence, and a research plan on the school’s template.
5. Apply inside the window. Timing is Windows vary by school between April and September for an October start. In the 2026/27 cycle: University of Warsaw 14 April–21 May 2026, KISD IFJ PAN 22–26 June 2026, AGH 1 July–3 August 2026, PAS Olsztyn 11–13 September 2026. Warsaw-4-PhD runs a third round 17 December 2026–3 January 2027 for a mid-February start.
6. Sit the competition — a scored interview on your proposal, sometimes a written examination — then get the admission decision and scholarship start date in writing.
7. Apply for the visa at the Polish embassy handling your country. Allow 2 to 8 weeks and €200; the document list is on our Poland student visa guide.

Visa, family and life as a doctoral candidate

The route is The ordinary student permit, not a researcher permit: zezwolenie na pobyt czasowy w celu kształcenia się na studiach (art. 144 ustawy o cudzoziemcach), whose purpose clause expressly names doctoral school. Since the 2025 amendments the first permit runs 2 years 6 months and doctoral entrants get priority visa processing. The researcher permit (art. 151) covers only a foreigner hosted on a research project contract.

You enter on a National (Type D) visa and must show funds of PLN 17,650; see our proof of funds guide. Insurance runs PLN 55.80 per month on the NFZ voluntary scheme, living costs PLN 1,500–2,500 per month; dependants are assessed against the same income criterion.

Paid work needs no permit — no — and the term-time limit is No cap for full-time students at qualifying institutions, at a minimum wage of PLN 4,806 per month. The exemption now reaches only public universities and institutions on the MSWiA-approved list.
