What is the OeAD / Ernst Mach Grants?

The OeAD / Ernst Mach Grants are run by OeAD-GmbH, Austria’s Agency for Education and Internationalisation, and financed by the Federal Ministry of Women, Science and Research. Austria is the only destination that lists it.

Read the funded levels carefully: bachelor, master, phd, postdoc, research-stay. That list says who may hold the grant, not what the money buys. Ernst Mach pays for a period of research or study at an Austrian host institution — 1 to 9 months (Ernst Mach worldwide); 4 to 10 months at a university of applied sciences; the grant must be consumed by the end of 2028. If you are looking for money to cover a three-year bachelor’s or a two-year master’s in Vienna, this is the wrong scheme.

1024 incoming holders were funded in calendar 2025, from sixty countries. The largest strand by far was a Ukraine programme that ended in June 2026, so the worldwide and Fachhochschule variants now carry the scheme.

What does it cover?

Tuition is waived by university for the period you hold the grant. The stipend is €1,300 per month in the worldwide call for 2027/28; the Fachhochschule variant paid the same rate in its last published call.

Travel is a reimbursement, not an advance: Up to 1,200 EUR against original travel invoices for holders with citizenship of and travelling from DAC-list countries plus Gabon, Malaysia, Namibia, South Africa and Thailand. Keep every original invoice and boarding pass.

Health insurance is not covered. You buy it yourself and you need it for the residence permit. Housing is not paid either. OeAD student housing can be booked at roughly €330–800 a month plus a €24 monthly administration fee, but places are limited and not guaranteed.

Budget for one person only: the OeAD states the grant rate cannot be raised for holders who bring family, and no family allowance exists.

Who can apply from our countries?

Six of our nine origins come out eligible without qualification: Nigeria, Kenya, Egypt, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Ghana, South Africa and Morocco are marked restricted, so check which variant your passport fits before you spend weeks on a file. Restricted here means a variant-specific rule can work against you, not that a ban is published.

The nationality rule shows where that bites: Ernst Mach worldwide is open to citizens of every country except Austria. The university of applied sciences variant runs on a closed non-European country list, and the follow-up grant is restricted to non-European developing countries. There is no African quota and no priority list.

Level is the next filter, and the two variants differ: Worldwide: enrolled in a doctoral or PhD programme outside Austria, or holding a degree completed after 30 September 2025, or working as a researcher at a university outside Austria. Fachhochschule variant: enrolled in a master's, or in a bachelor's with at least four semesters completed by the start of the grant.

Age is a hard cut at 35. Years in work do not count against you, because there is no work-experience requirement; postdoc applicants must hold a research or teaching post at a university outside Austria. Deadline and timeline for 2027/28

The worldwide call for 2027/28 closes 1 December 2026 for stays beginning in September 2027. The exact opening day is not published; the call says September, so treat the autumn as your working window. The Fachhochschule variant runs on its own cycle, opening in October and closing at the start of February.

Nothing moves quickly after that. Submissions go through a formal check, then a plausibility check, then assessment by subject experts. OeAD’s FAQ puts the Letter of Award in early July 2027, roughly seven months after you submit. That gap is the real planning problem: your host lecturer has to hold the place open across it, so agree the dates in writing before you apply.

The money follows the stay rather than the award letter. The stipend is paid monthly once you arrive and begin, and the stay itself runs 1 to 9 months (Ernst Mach worldwide); 4 to 10 months at a university of applied sciences; the grant must be consumed by the end of 2028.

How to apply for the OeAD / Ernst Mach Grants

1. Find your Austrian host and secure a lecturer’s written consent. Write to the department whose work matches your project, propose specific dates, and ask for written agreement to supervise you. Without that consent there is no application.
2. Check the current grants.at entry for the variant you fit, including the target group, the age limit of 35 and the country list where one applies. The two calls carry different rules and closing dates.
3. Register an account at the official OeAD application portal and open the Ernst Mach application. Do this early: account problems in the last week are how people miss calls.
4. Complete the online form and describe the planned research activities in detail. Say what you will do in Austria, with whom, using which method, and why it needs that host.
5. Upload the documents. Two letters of recommendation from university lecturers; the written consent of your Austrian host lecturer; a scan of the passport page carrying your name and photograph; a scan of your diploma or degree certificate; for PhD students, confirmation of participation in a doctoral programme; for postdocs, confirmation of employment at the home university; for the Fachhochschule variant, confirmation of acceptance.
6. Submit before the close of 1 December 2026 for the worldwide call, or the start of February for the Fachhochschule variant. Late files are not assessed.
7. Wait through the formal check, the plausibility check and the expert assessment. There is no interview.
8. Accept the Letter of Award and plan the permit. Results are expected in early July 2027. Book the residence documents at once and read Austria student visa requirements and proof of funds before you buy a ticket.

Which universities and programmes

The grant follows you rather than the institution: any accredited Austrian university may host a worldwide grantee, and any Fachhochschule a Fachhochschule-variant holder. In our dataset the universities listing it are the University of Vienna, TU Wien, Graz University of Technology, the University of Innsbruck, the University of Salzburg, the University of Klagenfurt and Johannes Kepler University Linz.

IMC University of Applied Sciences Krems lists the Fachhochschule variant. MODUL University Vienna lists OeAD grants in general, but its participation as a host is unconfirmed — ask before you build a file around it.

Fields are wide on one side, narrow on the other: All disciplines for Ernst Mach worldwide; the university of applied sciences variant is limited to Fachhochschule subject areas — business and economics, tourism, engineering and technology, biotechnology, media and design, health and social work. Odds, and what to do if you miss it

1024 incoming holders were funded in 2025, but most of that number sat in the Ukraine strand that closed in June 2026, and the calls set no fixed quota — the number awarded depends on the budget and on how the expert panels rank the files. A vague project with a lukewarm host letter does not survive that stage.
