How a PhD works in Austria

The Austrian doctorate is a Doktoratsstudium (Dr. rer. nat., Dr. techn., Dr. phil., Dr. iur., Dr. rer. oec.) or PhD. Which title appears depends on the faculty, not on the standard of the work.

Two routes run side by side, and the dataset records the model as both. In the supervisor-led route you find a professor willing to supervise your dissertation, agree the topic, and are admitted as a doctoral student. In the structured route a doctoral school advertises a funded position with a defined research theme, and you apply through the university’s vacancy portal the way you would apply for a job.

The programme runs 3 to 4 years and starts in October, March. Austrian doctorates are not measured as an ECTS total: only the taught component carries credit, and the statutory measure is a minimum duration in semesters. That matters when you compare an Austrian offer with a British or Irish one.

Whole doctorate in English: yes, at most universities. Admission still asks for C1 in German and/or English, set by the university rather than by immigration law. Doctoral candidates are legally students, and staff too where they hold a contract.

How PhDs are funded — and what you are paid

There is no large tuition scholarship to chase, because the fee is small already. A third-country doctoral candidate pays €726.72 per semester at a public university, plus the union fee of €26.20 per semester. Ugandan and Zambian citizens sit on Austria’s least-developed-country exemption list and pay only the union fee; the other seven origins pay the full rate.

The money comes from the position, not from a grant fund. The standard arrangement is an employment contract as a University Assistant at praedoc grade, under the Collective Bargaining Agreement for University Staff, financed from FWF or EU project grants, a university budget line, or an FWF doc.funds doctoral school. That agreement sets the salary at €3,776.10 per month gross, before tax and social insurance. There is no automatic stipend: outside a funded post or a doc.funds school the doctorate is self-funded.

Admission and funding are two separate decisions, and winning the first does not produce the second. A supervisor can accept your proposal and have no post to put you in.

The national scheme does not close that gap. The OeAD Ernst Mach Grant pays €1,300 per month with tuition waived, but it funds a stay of 1 to 9 months (Ernst Mach worldwide); 4 to 10 months at a university of applied sciences; the grant must be consumed by the end of 2028 and may not finance a whole degree. Nigeria, Kenya, Egypt, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe are eligible; Ghana, South Africa and Morocco are restricted, and the age limit is 35. Erasmus Mundus funds master’s study only. Entry requirements for a PhD

You need a subject-related master’s or diploma degree of at least the same level as the Austrian one. There is no centralised check: each university assesses foreign certificates itself, and ENIC-NARIC Austria evaluates credentials only for regulated professions, not for admission. So the admissions office you apply to decides whether your master’s is equivalent. An APS certificate is not required: no. Documents must be legalised, and an apostille is enough only for South Africa and Morocco. Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Egypt, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe need full consular legalisation, which takes longer than most applicants allow. Improperly legalised documents are a listed refusal reason at the permit stage.

Language is set institution by institution at C1. Where a test score is quoted it follows the master’s floor at that university: IELTS 6.5 at the University of Vienna, 6.5 at TU Wien, 7 at WU Vienna.

Two requirements are on no certificate list and decide most cases: a supervisor who has agreed in writing to take you, and a proposal that fits what their group is already funded to do.

Universities and doctoral schools to look at

The University of Vienna is the largest, with 85,200 students and a rank of #140 (QS 2027). Doctoral admission runs year-round through u:space at €726.72 per semester.

TU Wien, at #191 (QS 2027), is the strongest Austrian address for engineering and informatics. It waives the doctoral fee for doctoral college selectees and MSCA network candidates; others pay €726.72 per semester.

TU Graz, #409 (QS 2027), teaches at all levels in English, covers engineering, computing and chemistry, and charges €726.72 per semester.

The Medical University of Vienna runs 16 English doctoral programmes and ranks #84 (QS 2026). Its fee is €0–726.72 per semester: salaried positions pay nothing, self-funded candidates the standard rate.

The University of Graz, #696 (QS 2027), offers many English doctorates in law, economics and environmental science.

The University of Innsbruck, #350 (QS 2026), is the most international in the set at 52.1 per cent, but English coverage is only some.

The University of Klagenfurt lists 5 English doctoral programmes in informatics and data science, in Austria’s cheapest university city at €1,100–1,500 per month.

WU Vienna lists 3 in business, economics and finance. MODUL University Vienna is the private contrast: its single English doctorate costs €8,000 per semester.

How to apply for a PhD in Austria

1. From September 2026 — decide which route you are on. Supervisor-led means you bring the topic and funding stays open; a structured position means topic and salary are fixed and selection is competitive.
2. October to December 2026 — shortlist research groups, not universities. Identify two or three professors whose current projects your master’s work connects to, and check whether their institute runs a doctoral school.
3. December 2026 to February 2027 — write the proposal: research question, method, timeline over 3 to 4 years, and why this group. Send it with your CV and transcripts.
4. Throughout 2027 — watch the university job portals for funded praedoc vacancies. They are advertised as employment, follow their own deadlines, and are the fastest route to a salary.
5. As soon as a supervisor agrees — start legalisation. Apostille covers South Africa and Morocco only; the other seven origins need consular legalisation.
6. Apply for admission directly to the university, with the supervisor agreement and proposal attached; there is no central doctoral portal. Timing is Rolling: the University of Vienna accepts doctoral admission applications year-round through u:space with a 3 to 6 week review; the statutory 5 September / 5 February closing dates apply where a university sets a fixed period. 7. On receiving the admission letter — file for the residence permit at the Austrian embassy. Allow 13 to 26 weeks and €218; the document list is on our Austria student visa guide.

Visa, family and life as a doctoral candidate

The route is Aufenthaltsbewilligung – Student, the same residence permit as for bachelor's and master's study; doctoral candidates must additionally supply a supervisor's confirmation of study progress at renewal. A candidate who takes up an employment contract as a researcher instead applies for the Rot-Weiss-Rot Karte (Red-White-Red Card) for researchers, valid two years, application fee EUR 218, processing about 8 weeks.

On the student permit, paid work is capped at Up to 20 hours/week; an employer-obtained AMS 'Beschäftigungsbewilligung' is required for ALL paid work, even minor (geringfügig) jobs, but no full labour-market test applies at or below 20h/week — a praedoc contract runs above that cap, which is why salaried candidates use the researcher route. After the doctorate you get 12 months to find work.
