Foundation and Preparatory Courses in Cyprus for African Students

Who needs a preparatory year in Cyprus — and who doesn’t

Most people reading this do not. A recognised school leaving certificate — WASSCE or SSCE, KCSE, the NSC, ZIMSEC, ECZ, UACE, Thanaweya Amma or the Moroccan Baccalauréat — is enough on its own for bachelor’s entry at the private universities, with no entrance examination and no state pre-university year. Your certificate is assessed by the university that admits you and must be apostilled; KYSATS (EUR 85.43 per application) covers higher-education qualifications only.

What stops applicants is English, not schooling. Each university sets its own floor: IELTS 5 at Frederick University, 5.5 at UCLan Cyprus, 6 at the University of Nicosia and 6.5 at European University Cyprus, against a national reference floor of 5.5.

Three groups need a preparatory route: applicants whose English sits below the lowest university floor, applicants for medicine or dentistry who lack the school science subjects, and anyone aiming at the University of Cyprus’s Greek-taught international scheme, which asks for a certificate of Greek before admission. If you already hold English evidence at the floor of the university you want, apply straight to the degree and keep the fee.

The preparatory routes in Cyprus

Cyprus has two preparatory routes, and both are run by universities rather than the state. The first is the English Language Foundation Programme. It is for Holders of a recognised school leaving certificate whose English is below the admission minimum of IELTS 5.0; entry from IELTS 4.0 (TOEFL iBT 42, B1 Preliminary pass, PTE 43). At UCLan Cyprus the programme is open only to third-country nationals. It runs 9 months and costs €6,500 per programme for the whole programme. The providers are University of Nicosia, UCLan Cyprus. It leads to IELTS 5.0 or equivalent B2 certificate at the end of the second semester, then enrolment in a first-cycle (or second-cycle) programme at the same university; the courses carry 0 ECTS.

The second is the Foundation Programme for Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Medicine, run by European University Cyprus. It is for Applicants who lack the science subjects or fall just short of the grades for entry to MD, BDS or DVM programmes. It runs 5 months and leads to Certificate of Completion at a cumulative C+ (GPA 2.5/4.0) and progression to the university's own medical programmes at the October intake; taught online, so it carries no residence permit. The degrees it feeds are billed at €21,000–23,000 per year.

Neither is a state bridging year. Cyprus runs no shared pre-university programme and no entrance examination for non-EU applicants, so each route belongs to the university that teaches it: Frederick University and Philips University, for instance, direct applicants who fall short into their own preparatory courses. Completing a preparatory route earns you the exit certificate and a place in that same university’s degrees; it is not a transferable qualification and it buys you nothing in another university’s admissions queue. Learning the language before the degree

Language preparation in Cyprus means English. The English Language Foundation Programme targets B1 over 9 months at €6,500 per programme, and its exit level is the Ministry’s admission minimum. Several universities sit above that minimum for their own degrees, 6 at the University of Nicosia and 6.5 at European University Cyprus, so leaving the programme at the floor does not open every door on the island.

No Greek preparatory year leading to a degree exists: the University of Cyprus asks international applicants for a certificate of Greek before admission, not after a bridging year. For almost everyone we place this is beside the point, because the degrees are taught in English.

Can you get a visa for a preparatory course?

Yes, for the on-campus English programme. A student entry permit and residence permit are granted for the one-year course at an accredited institution on the same terms as a degree: full-time attendance, a conditional offer letter, tuition paid, proof of funds, health insurance, the medical tests, and renewal every year. An online foundation course carries no permit, so the medicine route cannot bring you into Cyprus.

The costs are the degree costs. The entry and residence permit is €70–140, first registration in the Aliens’ Register a further €70, and renewal €55 per year. Processing runs 4 to 13 weeks. Biometrics are taken and a TB test is required, alongside HIV, hepatitis B and C and syphilis tests taken at home and repeated after arrival. What a preparatory year costs

The course is €6,500 per programme for the whole programme, plus an application fee of €50 at UCLan Cyprus or €55 at Frederick University. Living costs run €700–1,000 per month nationally. The city decides the rest: Nicosia is €600–650 per month, Larnaca, where UCLan Cyprus sits, €800–950 per month. Health cover adds €120–300 per year, with inpatient cover of at least 13,700 EUR a year.

You also have to show the money before you travel — €5,000–7,000 per year, set by the university that files your permit — and a foundation year does not reduce it. How to apply for a foundation or preparatory course

1. Sit an English test first. Reaching IELTS 5 opens direct bachelor’s entry and saves you both the fee and the year.
2. Pick the route. The English Language Foundation Programme at University of Nicosia, UCLan Cyprus, or the medicine foundation at European University Cyprus, which is online and carries no permit.
3. Prepare the certificates. Get your school leaving certificate and transcripts apostilled; use KYSATS (EUR 85.43 per application) only if you also hold a higher-education qualification.
4. Apply. Direct to the university that runs the programme, on the same application form as the degree; a €50 (UCLan Cyprus) or €55 (Frederick) application fee applies.
5. File in time for 2027. Late June for September entry and late October for February entry at the University of Nicosia; UCLan Cyprus admits on a rolling basis, and applicants are advised to apply early enough for the entry permit. For a September 2027 start, apply in the spring.
6. Accept and pay. Some private universities require a tuition prepayment before they submit your visa documents, so budget for it at the offer stage.
7. Build the permit file. Bank statement (student's own, or sponsor's with a signed sponsor letter) covering tuition and living costs; UCY renewal additionally needs a repatriation bank guarantee, plus insurance, the medical tests and a criminal record certificate. The university files with the Migration Department; allow 4 to 13 weeks.
8. Register after arrival. Register with the Migration Department in your first week and repeat the medical tests locally.

After the preparatory year

Pass the exit assessment and you enrol at the same university, at one of the two intakes it runs — September, January/February. Nothing is shortened by the year you have just done: the bachelor’s is still 4 years and 240 ECTS from the beginning, because the preparatory courses carry no credit. The medicine foundation is judged on a cumulative C+ and feeds European University Cyprus’s own October intake.
