PhD in Spain for African Students
A Spanish doctorate takes 3 to 4 years, costs €60–550 per year in tuition, and can be done entirely in English at most universities. A funded predoctoral contract pays €25,116 per year gross, because you are employed rather than given a stipend. The catch: since August 2026 doctoral candidates use the researcher residence permit, not the student visa.
How a PhD works in Spain
The Spanish doctorate is a Doctorado — programa de doctorado leading to the título de Doctor o Doctora. It runs under RD 99/2011, which awards the degree on the thesis alone: it carries no taught credits, so there is no coursework total to compare with a taught master’s.
Two routes run side by side, and the dataset records the model as both. In the supervisor-led route you find a director willing to take your thesis, agree the research line, and are admitted to that group. In the structured route the Escuela de Doctorado admits to a named programme with its own research lines, and the money sits with a project, not with you.
Programmes run 3 to 4 years full-time and start in October, November, March — three entry points, not one. Where the school judges your background short, it sets complementos de formación: bridging subjects taken in year one and billed as ordinary credits.
Whole doctorate in English: yes, at most universities. Spanish still runs the paperwork, defence rules are set school by school, and life outside the lab is conducted in Spanish, Catalan, Basque, Galician.
How PhDs are funded — and what you are paid
Tuition is not the obstacle here. Annual enrolment is the tutela académica de tesis, a supervision fee rather than a credit charge, running €60–550 per year across the public system with no non-EU surcharge at doctoral level in Madrid or Catalonia. Compare €5,044–10,153 per year for a non-EU master’s in Madrid.
The income comes from a post, not from a grant fund. The standard instrument is the contrato predoctoral, an employment contract under Ley 14/2011 and RD 103/2019 carrying social security affiliation, payroll, IRPF withholding, paid leave and unemployment accrual. It is a salary, not a tax-free stipend. The published floor in the FPU call is €25,116 per year gross, paid over twelve months plus two pagas extraordinarias, against a statutory minimum wage of €1,221 per month.
Four routes carry that money: FPU, run by the Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades; FPI, called since 2023 by host universities and research centres against funded Generación de Conocimiento projects; Doctorados Industriales, for theses inside company R&D; and a contract charged to your supervisor’s project grant, the most common route in practice. None imposes a nationality or residency condition, so candidates from all nine origin countries are eligible — but FPU requires admission or enrolment at a Spanish university when you apply, so the programme place comes first.
Neither national scheme helps a doctoral candidate: Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters and MAEC-AECID Scholarships both fund master’s study only, as our Spain scholarships page sets out. Outside a contract, a Spanish PhD is cheap in fees and unpaid in income.
Entry requirements for a PhD
Doctoral access needs a master’s. A degree from outside the European Higher Education Area goes through the university’s own comprobación de nivel rather than central homologación: the school checks that it gives access to doctoral study in the issuing country, and that check confers no Spanish equivalence. It is the standard route for African qualifications, with no pre-check agency in front of it — no.
Spanish law counts the first degree and the master’s together, so a shorter bachelor’s pairs best with a longer master’s; our Spain master’s guide covers how African first degrees are judged. Documents must be legalised, and an apostille is accepted for South Africa and Morocco only. The other seven origins need consular or diplomatic legalisation.
There is no national English floor; a quoted score follows the master’s level at that university, IELTS 5.5 at UC3M.
Two things decide most files and appear on no certificate list: a proposal that fits a line the group is already funded to work on, and a director who has agreed in writing. UC3M wants an aval de proyecto de tesis before you apply; UB assigns one after admission.
Universities and doctoral schools to look at
Spain has 96 recognised higher education institutions, profiled on our Spanish university pages.
The University of Barcelona is the highest-ranked in the set at #165 (QS 2027), with 63,800 students and English coverage of some. It publishes no separate non-EU doctoral fee.
Complutense University of Madrid runs one annual pre-inscription window and charges €390 per year, at #199 (QS 2027). Autonomous University of Madrid charges the same €390 per year flat supervision fee at #226 (QS 2027), strongest in sciences, law and psychology.
Autonomous University of Barcelona, #211 (QS 2027), charges €546–764 per year — the upper figure is year one only, because a non-homologated foreign degree carries a one-off equivalence charge.
Pompeu Fabra University teaches at all levels in English, ranks #263 (QS 2027) and charges €401.12–470.92 per year, with strength in economics, communication and biomedicine.
Carlos III University of Madrid lists many English programmes at €468–624 per year and is the clearest fit for economics, engineering and political science. Polytechnic University of Catalonia covers engineering, telecommunications and data at €401–541 per year.
Two private contrasts: the University of Navarra charges €1,655 per year in the thesis phase, and IE University charges €60,000 per year for its business doctorate.
How to apply for a PhD in Spain
- From September 2026 — pick research groups, not universities. Read recent output in your field and pick two or three directors whose funded lines your master’s work touches.
- October 2026 to January 2027 — write the thesis proposal: question, method, a timeline across 3 to 4 years, and why this group. Send it with your CV and transcripts.
- Start legalisation as soon as a director shows interest. Apostille covers South Africa and Morocco; the other seven origins need consular legalisation, the step that most often runs late.
- Ask the school to run the comprobación de nivel on your master’s. There is no national portal: RUCT lists accredited programmes but takes no applications.
- Apply to the Escuela de Doctorado direct. Windows are 2027/28 windows not published as of 2026-09-10. Recurring 2026/27 pattern: UC3M 1 February – 31 August for a 15 November start and 1 September – 31 January for a 30 March start; UCM a single annual pre-inscription window, 1 June – 11 September; UPV rolling, with admission valid for the current or the following academic year and enrolment deferrable to accommodate visa processing; UB set programme by programme.
- Apply for funding in parallel: FPU needs you admitted or enrolled when you apply, while FPI and project-grant posts are advertised by the university.
- With the admission letter and convenio de acogida, file the researcher authorisation with the UGE-CE, then take the resolución to the consulate. Allow 1 to 6 weeks and €90; documents are on our Spain student visa guide.
Visa, family and life as a doctoral candidate
The route changed in August 2026. Doctoral candidates no longer use the student authorisation: the Dirección General de Gestión Migratoria applied the autorización de residencia para investigación nacional, the researcher permit under Ley 14/2013 as amended by Ley 28/2022, to every foreign doctoral candidate, self-funded ones included, and consulates began turning away study-visa applications for doctoral study.
You or the host institution file it with the UGE-CE in Madrid on a convenio de acogida; the consulate grants the visa only once the resolución and its verification code exist. The permit is a residence and work authorisation with an initial two years, which is what makes taking up an FPU or FPI contract straightforward — the Up to 30 hours/week study cap belongs to the route you are no longer on. Budget €700–1,200 per month to live, €40–70 per month for insurance, and the TIE card at €16.08 within a month of arrival.

|---|---|
| Length | 3–4 years |
| Starts | October, November, March |
| How to apply | Direct to the individual university's Escuela de Doctorado. There is no national portal: RUCT is a registry of accredited programmes, not an application system. Applicants holding a degree from outside the EHEA request the university's own comprobación de nivel rather than central homologación, which is the standard route for African qualifications. A supervisor or research-line endorsement is formally required at some schools — UC3M demands an aval de proyecto de tesis before applying, while UB assigns the director after admission — and is decisive everywhere in practice, because the host institution is now the body that files the residence authorisation. |

| How doctorates work | Supervisor-led or structured programmes |
| Funding | Contrato predoctoral — an employment contract under Ley 14/2011 art. 21 and RD 103/2019, carrying full social security affiliation, payroll, IRPF withholding, paid leave and unemployment accrual, not a stipend. Named mechanisms: FPU, run by the Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades, with 870 four-year contracts in the 2025 call; FPI, which since 2023 is called and managed directly by the host universities and research centres against funded Generación de Conocimiento projects rather than by the ministry; Doctorados Industriales for theses embedded in company R&D; regional and university-own predoctoral calls such as FPI-UPM and FPU-CAIB; and contracts charged to a supervisor's project grant, which is the most common informal route. Neither the FPU 2025 convocatoria, its BOE extract, RD 103/2019 nor the FPI-UPM 2025 call imposes any nationality or residency condition, so African applicants are eligible; FPU requires admission or enrolment at a Spanish university at the time of applying, so programme admission must come first. |
| Typical stipend / salary | €25,116 per year — EUR 25,116 gross per year as the published minimum in the FPU 2025 call, paid as 12 monthly payments plus 2 pagas extraordinarias, so roughly EUR 1,794 gross per payment. This is a gross salary subject to IRPF and social security contributions, not a tax-free stipend. The statutory floor behind it, RD 103/2019 art. 7, sets the contract at no less than 56% of the equivalent-category salary in years 1 and 2, 60% in year 3 and 75% in year 4, never below the statutory minimum wage. University FPI calls sometimes publish total employer cost instead of salary — FPI-UPM 2025 quotes EUR 31,000 a year on that basis. |
| PhD tuition (non-EU) | €60–550 per year — Annual tutela académica de tesis under each community's precios públicos decree: UGR EUR 60.30, UC3M EUR 390 full-time or EUR 234 reduced, UB and UPC EUR 401.12 plus about EUR 140 of service fees. No non-EU surcharge applies at doctoral level in Madrid or Catalonia. |
| In English | Yes, at most universities |
| Visa / permit | Autorización de residencia para investigación nacional — the researcher permit under Ley 14/2013 art. 72 as amended by Ley 28/2022, not the student visa. Criterio de Gestión 2/2026 of the Dirección General de Gestión Migratoria, dated 11 August 2026, applies it to all foreign doctoral candidates without distinguishing self-funded from contract-funded ones, and the Spanish consulates in São Paulo and Guadalajara announced on 17 August 2026 that they would no longer accept study-visa applications for doctoral study. Either the candidate or the host institution files the authorisation with the UGE-CE in Madrid, on the strength of a convenio de acogida whose minimum content may be supplied by a letter of invitation; only once the resolución and its verification code are issued does the consulate grant the visa. The permit is formally a residence and work authorisation with an initial two years, which is what makes taking up an FPI or FPU contract legally straightforward — unlike the estancia por estudios, which grants stay rather than residence and is now closed to doctoral candidates. |
| Stay after graduating | 24 months (Autorizacion de residencia para busqueda de empleo o para emprender un proyecto empresarial (job-search / entrepreneurship permit)) |
| Note | Not applicable (ects): a Spanish doctorate carries no taught credits — RD 99/2011 awards the degree on the thesis. Complementos de formación are individual and due in year 1 (20 ECTS at UPV, 40 at UC3M). Maximum 4 years full-time, 5 with prórroga; 7 part-time, 8 with prórroga (RD 576/2023). |

What works in your favour
- Fees are small next to taught study: €60–550 per year in tutela académica, with no non-EU doctoral surcharge in Madrid or Catalonia, against €5,044–10,153 per year at master’s level.
- A funded place is employment, not charity. The FPU floor is €25,116 per year gross, with social security, paid leave and unemployment accrual attached.
- No predoctoral route publishes a nationality or residency condition, so all nine origin countries can compete for FPU, FPI and project-funded posts.
- Three starts a year — October, November, March — and UPV lets an admission carry to the following year, so consular delay need not cost twelve months.
- After the thesis the Autorizacion de residencia para busqueda de empleo o para emprender un proyecto empresarial (job-search / entrepreneurship permit) gives 24 months for €10.94.
The honest downsides
- Admission and funding are separate decisions, and the first does not produce the second. Without a contract you carry €700–1,200 per month on no income for 3 to 4 years.
- No national scholarship covers a doctorate. Both Spanish schemes in our dataset fund master’s study only.
- The African cohort is small and concentrated: 8,625 of 196,567 international students in 2023/24, most of them Moroccan at 5,151, with 7 from Zambia and 15 from Zimbabwe.
- Legalisation is heavy for seven of the nine origins, where an apostille is not accepted.
- 2027/28 doctoral windows are not published, so you plan against last year’s pattern. Private fees are another order: €60,000 per year at IE University. Budgets sit on our Spain cost page.
Our core guidance is free, funded by the commission universities pay when you enrol. At doctoral level that means the unglamorous work: building a director shortlist from funded projects rather than rankings, reading your proposal before a professor does, telling you whether a place is salaried or self-funded, and timing legalisation against the researcher-permit file. We vet every document before submission, so a legalisation gap does not become a refusal. Premium Placement is an optional paid service covering file preparation and submission.
How to apply for a PhD in Spain from Africa
-
Shortlist research groups
Read recent output in your field and identify two or three directors whose funded research lines connect to your master's work. Choose groups, not university rankings.
-
Write the thesis proposal
Set out the research question, the method, a timeline across three to four years, and why this group. Send it with your CV and transcripts in a short, specific email.
-
Legalise your documents
Begin as soon as a director shows interest. An apostille is accepted for South Africa and Morocco only; the other seven origin countries need consular or diplomatic legalisation.
-
Request the comprobación de nivel
Ask the doctoral school to check that your master's gives access to doctoral study in the country that issued it. This replaces central homologación and grants no Spanish equivalence.
-
Apply to the Escuela de Doctorado
Apply directly to the university's doctoral school with the proposal and the director's endorsement where required. There is no national application portal for doctoral study.
-
Apply for funding in parallel
FPU requires admission or enrolment at the time of applying. FPI contracts and project-grant posts are advertised by the host university and follow their own call deadlines.
-
File the researcher authorisation
With the admission letter and the convenio de acogida, file with the UGE-CE in Madrid, then take the resolución and its verification code to the Spanish consulate for the visa.
Frequently asked questions
Tuition is the tutela académica de tesis, €60–550 per year in the public system, with no non-EU surcharge at doctoral level in Madrid or Catalonia. Funding is separate. A predoctoral contract pays €25,116 per year gross as an employee, but it is competitive and not automatic. Without one you cover living costs yourself.
No, and that is the common misunderstanding. The low fee is not funding. A contrato predoctoral is won separately through FPU, an FPI call, a Doctorados Industriales place or a supervisor's project grant, and a Spanish university can admit you to a doctoral programme with no money attached at all. Ask which it is before you accept.
Yes at most universities. Pompeu Fabra teaches at all levels in English and Carlos III lists many English programmes. The thesis, the defence and supervision can run in English. Administration, contracts and daily life do not, so Spanish remains worth learning for the years you are there.
3 to 4 years full-time, with starts in October, November, March. The degree is awarded on the thesis, not on credits, so there is no ECTS total to complete. Complementos de formación are set individually in the first year where the school judges your background short of the programme's field.
Usually, through the university's own comprobación de nivel rather than central homologación. The school checks that your qualification gives access to doctoral study in the issuing country; the check grants no Spanish equivalence and no pre-check agency applies. Documents need legalisation, and an apostille is accepted for South Africa and Morocco only.
Work from funded research lines, not rankings. Read recent publications, pick two or three directors whose projects connect to your master's work, and send a short proposal with your CV and transcripts. Practice differs: UC3M wants a signed aval de proyecto de tesis before you apply, while UB assigns the director after admission.
Since August 2026 doctoral candidates use the researcher residence authorisation, not the student visa, and consulates have stopped accepting study-visa applications for doctoral study. The host institution or you file it with the UGE-CE on a convenio de acogida. Afterwards the job-search permit gives 24 months for €10.94.
The post-study window is wider. Royal Decree 316/2026, in force since 16 April 2026, lets you file for the job-search or entrepreneurship permit from two months before you finish to three months after, with your authorisation extended while the case is processed. The permit still runs 24 months and costs €10.94.
