Below: the scholarships you can genuinely win in one table, the ones to skip (and what to do instead), the strongest options by destination, who qualifies, and how to build an application that actually competes.

Best scholarships for Zimbabwean students

These are the scholarships confirmed open to Zimbabwean nationals for study in Europe and the UK. Award values and deadlines change every year — confirm each one on the official site before you apply.

Zimbabwe is confirmed eligible for Chevening, DAAD (DAC/OECD list) and Erasmus Mundus, and for the Government of Ireland scholarship (open to all non-EU/EEA students except Russia and Belarus). The Cyprus IKYK award names “third-country students” but does not name Zimbabwe specifically — confirm directly before relying on it.

What you are NOT eligible for (and what to do instead)

This is where honest guidance matters most. Several scholarships that appear on generic “scholarships for Zimbabweans” listicles are closed to Zimbabwe — applying wastes weeks you don’t have. Here’s the truth, with the reason:

• Commonwealth Scholarships (CSC) — NOT open to Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe is absent from every Commonwealth Scholarship Commission eligible-country list (they end at “Zambia”), because Zimbabwe left the Commonwealth in 2003 and re-admission is still pending. Do instead: the UK route for Zimbabweans is Chevening, which Zimbabwe is eligible for.
• Stipendium Hungaricum (Hungary) — NOT open to Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe is not one of the official Sending Partner countries, so there is no nomination pipeline for you. Do instead: for a fully funded EU master’s, look at Erasmus Mundus, which is open EU-wide and country-blind.
• Poland’s NAWA Banach / “My First Choice” — NOT open to Zimbabwe. The Banach country list excludes Zimbabwe, and “My First Choice” is for developed-country nationals only. Do instead: Poland is still very affordable as a self-funded destination — pair it with Erasmus Mundus if you want funding.
• Malta’s ENDEAVOUR II — NOT open to Zimbabwe. It is restricted to Maltese citizens and EU/EEA nationals resident in Malta; there is no third-country provision.

Bottom line: lead with Chevening, DAAD and Erasmus Mundus. Ignore any site that tells you to apply for Commonwealth or Stipendium Hungaricum as a Zimbabwean — that advice is wrong, and it’s exactly the kind of error our scholarships hub is built to correct.

Fully funded vs partial — know the difference

Not every “scholarship” pays for everything. Before you spend weeks on an application, check which type it is.

• Fully funded. Covers tuition and a monthly living stipend, and often accommodation, insurance and flights. You can realistically study with little or no family money. Chevening and Erasmus Mundus fall here, as does the Government of Ireland award (full fee waiver + €10,000 stipend).
• Partial. Covers some costs — a tuition discount, a one-off grant, or a stipend without full tuition. You still fund the rest. Many DAAD and university awards vary by programme, so read the coverage line carefully. Cyprus’s IKYK award is a part-cost top-up, not a full ride.

If you want study to cost as close to nothing as possible, start with the fully funded names above, then use Germany’s free public tuition (below) to close any gap.

Scholarships by destination

UK — Chevening

Chevening is the strongest single route for Zimbabweans aiming at the UK. The UK government’s scholarship fully funds a one-year master’s: tuition, a monthly stipend, return flights and visa costs. Zimbabwe is a confirmed eligible country with its own Chevening country page.

It is competitive and rewards around two years of work experience, leadership potential and a clear plan to return to Zimbabwe. Germany — DAAD (and free public tuition)

Germany’s biggest draw is that public universities charge no tuition at all — even before any scholarship — so you pay only a small semester fee. On top of that, DAAD (the German Academic Exchange Service) funds Zimbabweans through programmes like EPOS (Development-Related Postgraduate Courses), typically a monthly stipend of around €992 ≈ US$1,129 (graduate level), plus health insurance and travel. Zimbabwe sits on DAAD’s DAC/OECD-eligible list.

EU-wide — Erasmus Mundus

Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters let you study in two or more European countries on one fully funded scholarship — full tuition, a monthly allowance, plus travel and installation costs. There is no country-quota barrier for Zimbabwe; you apply directly to the specific joint master’s programme that fits your field. Most courses close between mid-October and mid-January. Ireland — Government of Ireland scholarship

The Government of Ireland International Education Scholarship (GOI-IES) gives a €10,000 ≈ US$11,380 stipend plus a full fee waiver for one year, at master’s or PhD level. Its eligibility rule covers all non-EU/EEA/UK/Swiss students except Russia and Belarus, so Zimbabweans qualify. Ireland is fully English-speaking, which suits Zimbabwe’s English-medium schooling — but it expects strong proof of funds, so the scholarship is worth chasing.

Cyprus — IKYK State Scholarship

The Cyprus State Scholarship Foundation (IKYK) offers up to €3,000/yr ≈ US$3,414 for bachelor’s and up to €4,000/yr ≈ US$4,553 for master’s study. The official page opens it to “third-country students” but does not name Zimbabwe, so treat this as a likely option and confirm Zimbabwe eligibility directly with IKYK before you build an application around it.

Eligibility & how to win

The big scholarships look for different things, but the patterns repeat. To compete from Zimbabwe, you’ll usually need:

1. Strong grades. Most awards expect a good honours classification — an Upper Second (2.1), which is 65–74% on the typical Zimbabwean scale, is a common threshold; some accept a Lower Second (2.2, 60–64%) with relevant work experience.
2. The right level. Chevening, DAAD-EPOS and the Government of Ireland award are for master’s and above; Erasmus Mundus is master’s-level joint programmes.
3. Work experience or leadership — Chevening in particular rewards around two years of professional experience, leadership potential and a clear plan to return home.
4. English evidence. English is Zimbabwe’s official language and medium of instruction, so many programmes accept ZIMSEC O-Level English (grade C often maps to IELTS 6.0–6.5) or a Medium of Instruction (MOI) letter. Some competitive courses still require IELTS/TOEFL — and note the UK’s own “majority English-speaking country” list does not include Zimbabwe, so degree-level English is met via the university’s assessment, not an automatic UKVI exemption. Check each one.
5. Verifiable documents. Authentic ZIMSEC O/A-Level certificates and genuine degree transcripts matter. Certificate fraud is a known concern, so destinations verify directly — the UK’s ECCTIS service contacts your awarding institution, and the British Council in Zimbabwe runs a Document Verification Service. A clean, verifiable file protects you.

How to actually win: apply early, follow the exact format, and write essays that answer the question asked — not a generic life story. Tie your course to a specific goal back in Zimbabwe. One well-targeted application beats five rushed ones.

A note on home funding (it’s domestic-only)

Unlike some countries, Zimbabwe has no government scheme that funds study abroad. ZIMDEF (the manpower development fund), the Ministry of Higher & Tertiary Education student loan scheme, the old cadetship programme and the merit-based Joshua Nkomo Scholarship all fund study inside Zimbabwe only — none of them pay for a foreign university. The loan scheme’s own rules state it does not cover programmes at foreign colleges or universities.

So for Zimbabweans, realistic funding means the international scholarships above (Chevening, DAAD, Erasmus Mundus, Government of Ireland), Germany’s free public tuition, or self/family/diaspora funding. Most Zimbabwean students abroad are self- or diaspora-funded, often holding funds in a USD (“Nostro”) account — and visa officers scrutinise the consistency and source of those funds closely, so document them carefully.

Deadlines to watch

Scholarship deadlines are fixed and unforgiving — miss one and you wait a full year. As a rough calendar (always confirm on the official site):

• Chevening — applications open around August, close around early November.
• Erasmus Mundus — most courses close mid-October to mid-January.
• DAAD (EPOS) — set per course, so check each programme’s page.
• Government of Ireland (GOI-IES) — typically opens late in the year, closes around spring.
• Cyprus IKYK — per call; confirm both the date and Zimbabwe eligibility.

Start at least six to nine months ahead — references, transcripts and document verification all take time. Note that for several EU destinations (Poland, Hungary, Malta, Cyprus) Zimbabweans apply through missions in Pretoria or Johannesburg, which adds lead time.
