Below: the best scholarships in one table, what you are not eligible for (and what to do instead), the strongest options by destination, who qualifies, and how to put together an application that actually competes.

Best scholarships for Zambian students

These are the scholarships genuinely open to Zambians for study in Europe and the UK. We’ve left out anything Zambia can’t apply for. Award values and deadlines change every year — confirm each one on the official site before you apply.

Zambia is confirmed eligible for Chevening (it has a dedicated Chevening country page) and, as a Commonwealth member, for Commonwealth Scholarships. DAAD, Erasmus Mundus and Mastercard Foundation Scholars are also relevant. Verify Ireland Fellows eligibility for the current cycle before relying on it.

What you are NOT eligible for (and what to do instead)

Honesty saves you weeks. Two scholarships that come up constantly in searches are closed to Zambians — don’t start those applications:

• Stipendium Hungaricum (Hungary). Zambia is not on Hungary’s partner-country list, so you cannot apply. (Many neighbouring countries can — Zambia simply isn’t one of them.) Instead: aim at the UK (Chevening/Commonwealth) or Germany (DAAD) where you genuinely qualify, or self-fund a tuition-free German public university.
• Poland’s NAWA / Banach Scholarship. The Banach programme covers a defined list of partner countries that does not include Zambia, so it isn’t an option. Instead: Poland is still affordable to self-fund, but for funded study look to Chevening, Commonwealth, DAAD or Erasmus Mundus.

One more reality check on home funding: Zambia’s HELSB (Higher Education Loans and Scholarships Board) administers government loans and scholarships primarily for study at Zambian institutions — it is not a mass overseas-study fund. Government overseas sponsorship is limited and usually runs through ministry or bilateral/employer routes. So for most Zambians, the realistic funded routes abroad are the international scholarships in the table above.

Fully funded vs partial — know the difference

Not every “scholarship” pays for everything. Before you spend weeks on an application, check which type it is.

• Fully funded. Covers tuition and a monthly living stipend, and often accommodation, insurance and flights. You can realistically study with little or no family money. Chevening, Commonwealth and Erasmus Mundus fall here.
• Partial. Covers some costs — a tuition discount, a one-off grant, or a stipend without tuition. You still need to fund the rest yourself. Many DAAD and university awards are partial, so read the coverage line carefully.

Scholarships by destination

United Kingdom — Chevening & Commonwealth

Because Zambia is a Commonwealth member, the UK’s two flagship government scholarships are both open to you — this is your strongest fully funded corridor.

• Chevening is the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office scholarship for a one-year taught master’s, covering tuition, a monthly living stipend, return flights and visa costs. Zambia has its own Chevening country page. It rewards around two years of work experience, leadership potential and a clear plan to return home.
• Commonwealth Scholarships fund Zambians for master’s and PhD study, with coverage varying by award (typically tuition, stipend and travel), administered by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission via UK universities.

Encouragingly, the UK grants the large majority of genuine student visas — sponsored study visas have an overall grant rate of around 95% (year ending September 2025). A scholarship plus clean, genuine documents puts you in a strong position.

Germany — DAAD (and free public tuition)

Germany’s biggest draw is that public universities charge no tuition at all — even before any scholarship. On top of that, DAAD (the German Academic Exchange Service) funds Zambians through a range of programmes, mostly at master’s and PhD level, typically with a monthly stipend and often travel and insurance.

Because German public tuition is already free, a DAAD stipend can turn an affordable degree into a genuinely funded one. Good news for Zambians: there is no APS requirement for Germany (that exists only for China, Vietnam and India) — your admission is normally routed through uni-assist. EU-wide — Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters

Erasmus Mundus funds an international master’s where you study in two or more European countries, covering full tuition, a monthly allowance, travel and installation costs. It’s open to students worldwide, Zambia included, and is one of the most generous packages available — apply directly to the joint programme you want.

Ireland — Ireland Fellows / Irish Government scholarships

Ireland is fully English-speaking and runs government-funded scholarships (including the Ireland Fellows Programme) covering tuition, a stipend and flights for selected master’s fields. Eligibility is by country and field and changes year to year, so confirm Zambia is in the current cycle before you build the application.

Eligibility & how to win

The big scholarships look for different things, but the patterns repeat. To compete from Zambia, you’ll usually need:

1. Strong grades. Most awards expect a good degree result — a Merit or Credit classification (or upper-second equivalent) is a common threshold; some accept lower with strong work experience. A four-year Zambian bachelor’s (UNZA, CBU, Mulungushi or a recognised private university) is generally treated as comparable to a UK/Irish honours degree.
2. The right level. Chevening, Commonwealth and most DAAD awards are for master’s and above; Erasmus Mundus is master’s; a few schemes fund PhDs.
3. Work experience or leadership — Chevening in particular rewards around two years of professional experience, leadership potential and a clear plan to return home.
4. English evidence. English is Zambia’s official language and the medium of instruction, so many programmes accept your English-taught degree or a Medium of Instruction (MOI) letter; some still require IELTS/TOEFL. For the UK, Zambia is not on the visa exemption list, but at degree level the university often assesses English itself or accepts an Ecctis report — so a SELT is frequently waived in practice. Check each programme.
5. Verifiable documents. Authentic ECZ Grade-12 results, genuine UNZA/CBU transcripts and a clean record matter — missions explicitly warn about forgery, so documents must be originals, signed and stamped by the issuer (never emailed scans), and certificates may need Apostille or legalisation.

How to actually win: apply early, follow the exact format, and write essays that answer the question asked — not a generic life story. Tie your course to a specific goal back in Zambia. One well-targeted application beats five rushed ones.

A note on cost and currency

Scholarships aside, it helps to know the numbers in Zambian Kwacha (ZMW) when you plan. The Kwacha is a freely-floating, copper-linked currency and is historically volatile, so treat any conversion as indicative and refresh from the Bank of Zambia on the day. As a rough guide used in mid-2026, 1 EUR ≈ 22.5 ZMW and 1 GBP ≈ 26.1 ZMW — re-check the rate at point of use.

This matters for the self-funded backup plan: Germany’s public universities are tuition-free, but a self-funded student must show a blocked account of €11,904 (≈ ZMW 267,800) for the first year — and no Zambian bank offers a compliant blocked account, so you’d use an international provider (Fintiba, Expatrio, Coracle). A scholarship removes most of this friction, which is exactly why the funded routes above are worth the effort.

Deadlines to watch

Scholarship deadlines are fixed and unforgiving — miss one and you wait a full year. As a rough calendar (always confirm on the official site):

• Chevening — applications open around August, close around November.
• Commonwealth — varies by award and UK university; check the CSC and host-university pages.
• Erasmus Mundus — most courses close mid-October to mid-January.
• DAAD — varies by programme; check each portal.
• Ireland Fellows / Irish Government — typically annual; confirm the cycle and Zambia eligibility.

Start at least six to nine months ahead — references, transcripts and (for some destinations) document legalisation all take time.
