How Much Does It Cost to Study in Hungary?

So Hungary is affordable for an EU degree, but not free. Below: every figure in euros, US dollars and Naira; tuition for general courses versus medicine; living costs; what funds you must prove for the visa; the cheapest universities; and how the Stipendium Hungaricum can cover the lot.

The real cost of studying in Hungary (summary)

Here is the first-year picture for a self-funded African student on a general (non-medical) degree. Naira uses €1 = ₦1,575 and USD $1 = ₦1,381 (June 2026) — the naira is volatile, so re-check before you commit. Hungarian universities quote tuition in USD, EUR or HUF depending on the institution — always check which.

Tuition fees in Hungary: general degrees vs medicine

This is where Hungary trips people up. A general bachelor’s or master’s is moderate; the famous English medical degrees cost three to four times as much.

General (non-medical) tuition

For most bachelor’s and master’s degrees — business, IT, engineering, sciences — expect about USD 6,000–8,000 per year (≈ €5,300–7,000, ≈ ₦8.3M–11M):

Medicine, dentistry and pharmacy (much pricier)

Hungary’s one-tier English medical degrees are its signature export — and its most expensive option:

Living costs in Hungary (EUR + ₦)

Hungary’s official student budget is about €600–700 a month (≈ ₦937,000–1.09M), or roughly €7,000 a year. Rent is the swing factor — Budapest is far pricier than Debrecen, Szeged or Pécs, almost entirely on housing.

Health insurance

Comprehensive health insurance is mandatory to enrol and to get your study residence permit; self-funded non-EU students are not covered by Hungarian state insurance automatically.

• Commercial student policy — about €300/year (≈ ₦468,900), e.g. Generali “STUDIUM,” recommended by the University of Pécs. This is the cheapest route.
• Voluntary national insurance (NEAK) — now far pricier at ~€2,900/year, because it is pegged to 30% of the rising minimum wage.
• Bundled — Szeged and Debrecen include basic insurance in the tuition fee for their medical programmes.

Proof of funds for the Hungarian student visa

Hungary is unusual: there is no fixed published proof-of-funds figure and no blocked account like Germany’s. The Aliens Policing authority (OIF) requires evidence of “sufficient resources” for living costs, accommodation, healthcare and return travel — assessed case-by-case.

Accepted proof includes any of:

• A bank certificate / statement in your name (savings or income).
• A notarised maintenance declaration from a family member, plus proof of their means.
• A regular income document.
• A scholarship certificate (e.g. Stipendium Hungaricum).

You must also show proof of paid tuition and proof of health insurance in the file. Because there is no set number, we advise students to evidence tuition paid + about €7,000/year living + insurance + return airfare to satisfy the test — the consulate has discretion. Cheapest universities and student cities in Hungary

Because Hungary charges tuition, the “cheapest” route depends on both tuition and rent. The genuinely low-cost combination is an affordable university in a smaller city — not Budapest:

• MATE (Hungarian University of Agriculture & Life Sciences, Gödöllő) — the cheapest flagship at €2,000–3,000/year (≈ ₦3.1M–4.7M) for most degrees.
• Széchenyi István University (Győr) — €3,400–5,200/year by programme.
• University of Szeged — Hungary’s cheapest big city on rent (private flat ~135,000 Ft); strong, QS-ranked.
• University of Debrecen / University of Pécs — large international communities, dorms from ~13,000–36,000 Ft/month, general degrees ~$6,800–7,500.

Avoid the priciest combination if budget is tight: a medical degree in Budapest (Semmelweis ~$20,900/year) plus a Budapest private flat (~225,000 Ft/month). A general degree at MATE or Szeged is the genuinely cheap route. Source: University of Debrecen.

English-taught reality: unlike Germany, Hungary offers English-taught degrees broadly at both bachelor’s and master’s level — 700+ foreign-language courses, strongest in medicine, engineering/IT and business. How to cover the costs — the Stipendium Hungaricum & work

You don’t have to find ₦8–11 million (or ₦23M+ for medicine) in cash. The main routes:

• Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship. The Hungarian Government’s flagship is fully funded — tuition-free, plus a HUF 43,700/month stipend (BA/MA), free dormitory or HUF 40,000/month toward housing, and medical insurance up to HUF 65,000/year. It can cover the entire cost above. But eligibility is not open to everyone: of the main African origins, Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and South Africa are eligible, while Zimbabwe and Zambia are NOT (no bilateral agreement, verified 2026-06-26). • Part-time work. Students may work up to 30 hours/week in term and full-time for up to 90 days/year in breaks. On the 2026 minimum wage (HUF 322,800/month gross), that gives roughly €445–550/month net — a top-up, not a funding plan.
• Family sponsorship. A notarised maintenance declaration plus proof of the sponsor’s means satisfies the “sufficient resources” test.

Honest note: don’t tell a Zimbabwean or Zambian student to apply for the Stipendium Hungaricum — they’re not eligible. And never rely on part-time work to fund your studies; your savings, sponsor or scholarship must stand on their own.
