Study in Hungary Without IELTS

This is the part most websites get wrong, so we’ll be clear about it below: skipping IELTS is not the same as “no English needed.” Your university still has to be satisfied you can study in English — it just confirms this through an MOI letter, an interview or its own test rather than an IELTS score. Here’s exactly when you can study in Hungary without IELTS, how the online tests work, and when you can’t.

Can you study in Hungary without IELTS? (when yes, when no)

For most African students, the honest answer is “often yes — but it depends on your university and your course.”

When you usually CAN skip IELTS:

• Your previous education was taught in English — you provide a Medium of Instruction (MOI) letter and the university accepts it instead of a language test. The University of Debrecen states plainly that if prior education was in English, an official certificate is accepted and no language test is needed — it may instead run an online interview.
• The university offers its own online English test or interview in place of IELTS.
• You hold a different recognised English certificate the university lists (TOEFL and other certificates are commonly accepted alongside IELTS).

When you usually CANNOT skip IELTS (or need a specific test or exam):

• Medicine, dentistry and pharmacy — these signature Hungarian English-taught degrees expect a strong command of English and a written entrance exam (typically Biology + Chemistry, with an English component) plus an interview. Semmelweis University, for example, assesses English through its own exam and runs a Biology/Chemistry/English written entrance test — a casual IELTS waiver does not apply here.
• The university doesn’t accept your MOI letter for the course you want and asks for a recognised test instead.
• Your prior study was not in English, so you have no MOI route and must prove English another way.

Important: Hungarian universities set their own English rules. One can waive IELTS for your English-taught degree while another insists on a test or its own exam for the same subject. Always confirm with the specific university — or let us check your documents against their requirement before you apply.

“No IELTS” is not “no English” — the distinction that matters

This is the single most misunderstood point. Skipping IELTS does not mean you skip proving English. It means the university accepts a different kind of proof.

In Hungary there is no central language test for the visa. The student residence permit — issued by the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing — checks your admission, your funds, your health insurance and your accommodation, but it does not set its own English-test requirement. So the English bar that matters is the university’s, not the immigration authority’s.

That means the whole “without IELTS” question lives at the admissions stage, with the university deciding whether your MOI letter, online interview, internal test or alternative certificate is enough. One myth to kill: being from an English-speaking country does not automatically waive the requirement. Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Zambia applicants still have to satisfy the university — through an MOI letter, interview or test, course by course. It is not granted by your passport.

Medium of Instruction (MOI) letter — your simplest route in Hungary

A Medium of Instruction (MOI) letter is an official document from a school or university you previously attended, confirming that your studies there were taught and examined in English. For African students whose entire education is in English, it is often the simplest way to skip IELTS for a Hungarian programme.

What an MOI letter should state:

• The institution’s name and official letterhead, with a contact and signature.
• The qualification you earned and the dates you studied.
• A clear statement that the language of instruction and assessment was English throughout.

How to get one:

1. Contact your previous university or school’s registrar / academic office.
2. Request an “MOI letter” or “English Medium of Instruction certificate” for admission purposes.
3. Ask for it on official letterhead, signed and stamped, ideally as a verifiable PDF.
4. Submit it to your Hungarian university with your application (often via the DreamApply portal).

The honest caveats:

• An MOI letter is not guaranteed to be accepted — it is the university’s decision, and some may still ask for an online interview to confirm your English.
• Medical, dental and pharmacy programmes generally won’t accept an MOI letter in place of their own English assessment and entrance exam.
• Your certificates and transcripts will still need certified English translations, and Hungary recognises foreign qualifications through ENIC-NARIC — separate from the English question, but part of the same application file.

Hungarian universities that accept students without IELTS

Many Hungarian universities run English-medium degrees and will admit you without IELTS if you meet their criteria — usually an MOI letter or a pass in their own online English test or interview. Examples to start your research from:

Medicine, dentistry & pharmacy — the exception, be honest

Hungary’s most famous English-taught degrees are its one-tier medical, dental and pharmacy programmes — and they are exactly where the easy “no IELTS” route runs out.

• These faculties expect a strong, demonstrable command of English, because you’ll study clinical science in English from day one.
• Admission turns on a written entrance exam — typically Biology and Chemistry, with an English element — plus an interview. Semmelweis University runs its own online Moodle exam covering Medical Biology, Medical Chemistry and Biomedical English.
• Where a university assesses English through its own exam or interview, that can mean you don’t sit a separate IELTS — but it is not a waiver of the English requirement. It is a different, often tougher, way of proving the same thing.

If medicine is your goal, plan for the entrance exam first and the language proof second — and don’t assume an MOI letter alone will carry you.

When you still need a recognised English test

You should expect to provide a recognised test such as IELTS or TOEFL when:

• Your prior education was not taught in English, so you have no MOI route.
• The university does not accept your MOI letter or its own interview for your course.
• The specific programme lists a test as mandatory (some do, even where others waive it).
• You’re applying for Stipendium Hungaricum, where the scholarship or a host university may require a standardised score for ranking.

The honest bit: what “without IELTS” does and doesn’t get you

• It doesn’t mean “no English needed.” Your university still has to be satisfied you can study in English — it just verifies it through an MOI letter, an interview or its own test instead of IELTS.
• It doesn’t guarantee admission. You still need the right grades, certified translations, ENIC-NARIC recognition where required, and a complete application.
• It doesn’t lower your visa risk on its own. Hungary’s residence permit hinges on proof of funds, paid tuition, insurance and accommodation — not on an English test. Skipping IELTS legitimately is fine; trying to look like you don’t need English at all is a red flag at interview.
