In 2027, costs run from approximately €2,400 in first-year fixed costs at a German public university, where tuition is zero, to well over £50,000 at a UK institution in London once fees, visa costs and maintenance are combined. Tuition, visa fees, proof-of-funds requirements and living benchmarks cover all seven destinations at June 2026 rates. Re-check every figure before you pay.
What Has Changed Since Earlier Guides
Before the full figures, three notable changes since earlier versions of this data:
Poland visa fee: now €200. The National (Type-D) student visa fee for Poland increased to €200 from 1 January 2026. Any figure you see quoting €80 or €135 is out of date. The Schengen C visa fee remains at €90, but that is not the student visa route.
UK maintenance thresholds: increased from November 2025. UK student visa applicants must now show £1,529 per month in London (maximum £13,761 for nine months) or £1,171 per month outside London (maximum £10,539). These figures supersede earlier published amounts.
UK Graduate Route: reduced to 18 months from January 2027. Students completing UK degrees from 1 January 2027 onward have 18 months (not two years) to remain in the UK on the Graduate Route for job-seeking and early work. Factor this into the UK’s total return-on-investment calculation.

Germany: Why the First-Year Total Looks Large But Is Not
Germany’s €11,904 blocked account creates a headline figure that can appear alarming. It is not a cost — it is your living budget, returned to you at €992 per month. Your actual first-year cash outflows (excluding rent and food, which you would spend anywhere) are:
- Visa application fee: €75
- uni-assist handling: €75 (first programme)
- Semester contribution: ~€500 for the year
- Health insurance: ~€1,755/year (statutory student rate)
- Total fixed costs before rent and food: ~€2,405
Rent and food vary widely by city. Munich is expensive; Leipzig and Halle are much more affordable. The blocked account funds your rent and food each month regardless.
United Kingdom: The Upfront Cost Stack
The UK has the highest upfront cost burden. Before you arrive, you pay:
- Visa application fee: £558
- Immigration Health Surcharge: £776 × number of years of study (a three-year course = £2,328 upfront)
- TB certificate: approximately £75–95 at an IOM clinic
- Maintenance evidence: £10,539–£13,761 must be held in your bank for 28 consecutive days
Tuition for international undergraduates ranges typically from £20,000 to £45,000 per year. Add those together and the first-year cost of a UK degree outside London runs approximately £31,000–£56,000 in year one before rent and food.
The UK Graduate Route reduction to 18 months (from 1 January 2027) matters for students who planned to recoup their investment through immediate post-study work. The arithmetic still works for many fields, but it changes the calculation for anyone relying on the full two-year window.
Ireland: No Free Tuition, Real Funds Required
Ireland does not offer free tuition for non-EU students. Every African student pays full international fees from day one. The range — approximately €9,850 to €60,000 per year — is wide because it spans private college arts programmes at the low end and medicine at Trinity College Dublin at the top.
The funds requirement of €10,000 for living costs (effective from June 2025) is in addition to tuition, not inclusive of it. You need both. A student attending UCC for a BA in arts (€18,500/yr in 2026/27) needs €18,500 + €10,000 = €28,500 demonstrably available. This continues for each subsequent year.
Malta: The Two-Stage Funds Trap
Malta’s financial requirements catch applicants by surprise because they differ between the D-visa (entry) and the e-Residence permit (post-arrival). The visa stage requires approximately €746 per month; the permit stage requires €950 per month (excluding tuition). University of Malta, MCAST, and ITS students are exempt from the higher health insurance threshold at permit stage; students at private colleges must show €100,000 health cover.
University of Malta tuition runs from €8,500 (arts BA) to €26,000 (medicine) per year. Private English-taught colleges have different structures.
Cyprus: EU Member, Not Schengen
Cyprus is an EU member state but is not part of the Schengen Zone. Its visa and residence permit process is separate. UCY (the public university) teaches predominantly in Greek, making it an academic path for anglophones rather than the default practical route. UNIC (€10,140–11,520/yr) and EUC (€9,240/yr) are the main English-taught private options.
Cyprus requires pre-arrival medical certificates — HIV, Hepatitis B and C, syphilis, and a TB chest X-ray — at the residence permit stage. Budget time for in-country clinic appointments before your departure.
There is no officially published national proof-of-funds threshold for Cyprus. UCY references €7,000 as a bank balance guideline. Do not use the “€800 minimum” sometimes quoted on agency sites — this is not an official national requirement.

The naira figure is particularly volatile. The NGN rate was approximately ₦700/€ in early 2023; it has since depreciated significantly. Do not plan your finances around a rate from a Facebook group post or a website that was last updated in 2022.
Scholarship Impact on These Costs
A full scholarship eliminates or dramatically reduces the figures above. For context:
Stipendium Hungaricum (Hungary): Covers tuition, provides a monthly stipend, and includes accommodation. Eligible: Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, Uganda, Egypt. Zimbabwe and Zambia are not eligible. Deadline approximately 15 January each year.
DAAD (Germany): The EPOS development master’s covers tuition plus a monthly stipend (amount varies by programme — confirm at daad.de). The Deutschlandstipendium supplements €300/month co-funded by universities, not a full scholarship. All eight origins eligible.
Erasmus Mundus: Covers full tuition plus a monthly living allowance and travel grant. Very competitive; highly worth preparing a strong application. Open to all eight origins. See the Erasmus+ portal.
Chevening and Commonwealth (UK): Full awards covering tuition plus living costs. Chevening is open to all eight origins. Commonwealth excludes Zimbabwe and Egypt. Both are highly competitive and close months in advance of the academic year.

What These Numbers Mean for Planning
The clearest decision logic from the cost data:
If you are self-funded and budget-constrained, Germany offers the lowest tuition cost by a substantial margin. The blocked account is a living budget, not a fee. If you can demonstrate €11,904 and cover visa and health insurance costs (~€2,400 additional), the annual out-of-pocket cost for your degree is semester contributions and health insurance — everything else comes back to you monthly.
If you need English-taught programmes and Germany’s language requirement is a barrier, Hungary and Poland offer self-funded options from USD 6,000 and €2,000 per year respectively, in English-medium programmes. Both are affordable relative to UK or Irish fees.
If the UK is your target for career or qualification reasons, price the full stack honestly: tuition + IHS + maintenance + visa fee. For a three-year outside-London course at £25,000/yr tuition, the four-year total (three study, one visa period) easily exceeds £100,000. Make sure the career outcome justifies it.
