Studying in Europe from Ghana: Full First-Year Cost in Cedis
Year one of studying in Europe from Ghana costs around GH₵170,000 to over GH₵750,000, depending on destination, institution and whether you hold a scholarship. Germany's public universities are the most affordable — zero tuition, with a €11,904 (GH₵161,894) blocked account returned to you monthly. The UK is the most expensive by a clear margin. The cedi moves, so re-check.
How to read this breakdown
Each section gives the main cash commitments in year one: tuition, the visa application fee, any mandatory proof-of-funds requirement, and notable running costs. “Proof of funds” is what you must demonstrate to the visa officer — in Germany’s case it comes back to you; in Ireland’s case it is a minimum balance, not a fee. Scholarship routes are noted separately; if you hold a full scholarship, most costs change significantly.
Germany — free tuition, blocked account, modest visa fee
Germany is the lowest-cost self-funded option for Ghanaian students because tuition at most public universities is €0.

The blocked account is the biggest number — but it is your money, returned at €992 per month. You are not losing it; you are pre-depositing a living budget. Your real out-of-pocket fixed costs in year one (visa, semester fees, uni-assist, health insurance) total roughly €2,402 (GH₵32,667) before rent and food.
Two exceptions to zero tuition: Baden-Württemberg charges non-EU students €1,500 per semester (€3,000/yr = GH₵40,800). Some selective programmes in Bavaria (e.g. TUM) charge €2,000–3,000/semester at bachelor’s level. If your target university is in those states, check its fee schedule before applying.

UK — the most expensive corridor for Ghanaian students
UK tuition for international undergraduates is typically £20,000–45,000 per year (GH₵316,000–711,000). On top of that, you need to show maintenance funds before receiving your visa, and pay the Immigration Health Surcharge upfront.

The IHS is paid upfront for the full visa length — so a three-year undergraduate visa means £2,328 (GH₵36,782) due on Day 1. The maintenance figure is what you must hold in your bank account, not what you spend — but it must be there and it must be explainable.
UK student visa refusal rates for Ghanaian nationals were approximately 26% in Q4 2025–Q1 2026 (ICEF/Home Office data) — among the UK’s highest for any origin market. Build your financial evidence carefully. A TB test from an approved IOM clinic is mandatory for any course lasting more than six months.
Scholarship route: Chevening (full tuition + stipend + flights) and Commonwealth CSC (full tuition + airfare + living allowance) are both open to Ghanaians. Strong competition; requires two years of work experience (Chevening) or a minimum 2:1 degree (Commonwealth).
Ireland — manageable visa fee, high proof-of-funds bar
Irish non-EU tuition is mid-range compared to the UK, but the visa requires you to show €10,000 plus course fees in your account before a single-year course.

The total bank balance you must demonstrate for a TCD arts place in year one is therefore at least €10,000 + €22,580 = €32,580 (GH₵443,088) — and that excludes rent and living costs once you arrive.
For Ireland, Ghana’s visa is decided by the Embassy of Ireland in Abuja, not Accra. Your documents go via VFS Accra, but the decision comes from Nigeria. Allow at least eight weeks.
Scholarship: The Government of Ireland International Education Scholarship (GOI-IES) awards €10,000 plus a full fee waiver to around 60 international students per year. The 2026 call closed in March 2026; the next is expected around January 2027 at hea.ie.
Malta — affordable tuition at the University of Malta
The University of Malta (UM) is the main affordable option. Its non-EU fees are set by statute and are among the lowest of any English-language European university.

Malta operates a two-stage funds requirement: your entry (D) visa needs proof of at least 75% of Malta’s national minimum wage per month (approximately €746/month in 2026); once you arrive, the e-Residence permit requires €950 per month excluding tuition. The figure you must show is not the same at both stages.
Health insurance also operates in two stages: your entry visa needs at least Schengen-standard cover (€30,000 minimum). Students at private colleges need €100,000 cover for the residence permit; UM, MCAST and ITS students are exempt from the higher threshold.
The Malta MFA scholarship is open to Ghanaian and Nigerian students (Kenya is excluded). Confirm current terms at the Malta High Commission.
Hungary — competitive tuition, Stipendium Hungaricum changes everything
Self-funded tuition in Hungary runs roughly USD 6,000–8,000 per year for most non-medical programmes. At June 2026 rates ($1 ≈ €0.877), that converts to approximately GH₵71,500–95,400 per year.

Hungary does not publish a fixed minimum funds threshold. The practical expectation is: show tuition paid, plus roughly €7,000 for annual living costs, plus health insurance, plus a return airfare.
With Stipendium Hungaricum, the picture changes entirely. Ghana is a confirmed sending partner — the scholarship covers full tuition, monthly stipend, accommodation contribution and medical insurance. Applications go through the Ghana Scholarships Authority. The portal deadline falls around mid-January each year; the Ghana Scholarships Authority typically sets an internal deadline three days earlier. If your academics are strong, this is the best-value route in the entire comparison.
Poland — low entry cost, note on NAWA
Poland’s public universities charge a statutory minimum of around €2,000 per year for non-EU students, rising to approximately €6,000 for competitive bachelor’s subjects (medicine is far higher at €15,500–17,000/year).

The funds requirement for a Polish student visa is stated in Polish zloty (PLN) — approximately 776 PLN per month for 15 months plus return travel allowance and tuition. There is no PLN-to-GHS rate in this post because the zloty rate fluctuates; apply the rate on your application date.
Important for Ghanaians: Poland’s NAWA Banach scholarship programme explicitly excludes Ghana from its eligible-country list. Do not apply expecting NAWA/Banach funding. Self-funding is viable; a funded route is not currently available via NAWA for Ghanaians.
Cyprus — UCY vs private English-taught colleges
The Republic of Cyprus (EU member; not Schengen) offers two tiers.

UCY fees are lower but the medium of instruction is predominantly Greek — academically practical mainly for Ghanaian students who already speak Greek or who enrol in the limited English-taught programmes. Private English-medium institutions cost more but offer full programmes in English.
The University of Cyprus quotes €7,000 as a bank-balance benchmark for non-EU applicants. This is the UCY figure; it is not a published national rule. Do not present it as a universal Cyprus minimum.
Cyprus requires strict pre-arrival medicals: HIV, Hepatitis B and C, syphilis, and tuberculosis (chest X-ray). These are arranged through the admitting institution before arrival. Cyprus is EU but not Schengen — your Cyprus permit gives you no Schengen travel rights.
The cedi risk: re-check every figure before you transfer
The GH₵ figures in this post are converted at the June 2026 mid-market rate. The cedi fell roughly 14% against the US dollar in 2024 and has depreciated approximately 64% against the euro over the past decade. The 30-day range for EUR/GHS in June 2026 was approximately GH₵12.45–13.70 per euro — that spread alone changes your Germany blocked-account requirement by roughly GH₵18,000.
Build at least a 15–20% buffer into any GH₵ budget you draw up today. Lock in transfer rates with your bank or a foreign-exchange provider as early as possible before you need the funds.

This is your living budget for the year — €992 per month — released to you monthly. It is not a fee you lose; you draw it down while you study. You also need to show this amount is legitimately yours, with at least three months of bank-statement history.
You must show you can cover course fees plus maintenance: £1,171 per month outside London (maximum £10,539 for nine months) or £1,529 per month in London (maximum £13,761 for nine months). At June 2026 rates (£1 = GH₵15.8), outside-London maintenance alone is approximately GH₵166,516. Add your full first-year tuition on top.
Most German public universities charge no tuition to international students, only a semester contribution of roughly €250 per semester (GH₵3,400). The exceptions are Baden-Württemberg (€1,500/semester for non-EU students) and some selective programmes in Bavaria. Health insurance (~€146/month) and the blocked account (€11,904) are the real first-year financial requirements.
Dramatically so. Stipendium Hungaricum for Hungary and DAAD awards for Germany can cover full tuition, living stipend, health insurance and accommodation — reducing your out-of-pocket first-year cost to near zero. Chevening and Commonwealth scholarships do the same for the UK. The trade-off is strong competition and specific eligibility conditions.
Many websites and Facebook groups quote exchange rates from 2021–2023, when the rate was closer to GH₵7–8 per euro. The cedi has depreciated significantly. All figures in this post use the June 2026 mid-market rate of 1 EUR = GH₵13.6 and 1 GBP = GH₵15.8. Re-confirm the rate on the day you transfer funds.
