Range of Universities and Courses
The UK has 304 HE providers and 685,565 international students (2024/25). Seventeen UK universities sit inside the global top 100, and the top five — Imperial (#2), Oxford (#4), Cambridge (#6), UCL (#9), King’s (#31) — are among the most globally recognised institutions anywhere. If your target employer or graduate school looks at institutional brand, the UK’s depth is unmatched.
Malta has one globally ranked university (UM, band 741–750) plus several smaller, unranked private providers.
Post-Study Work Rights
The UK Graduate Route lets BA/MA graduates live and work in the UK for 18 months (from applications on or after 1 January 2027) or 2 years (if you apply by 31 December 2026). Self-employment is allowed; you can switch to a Skilled Worker visa before the Graduate visa expires. There is no job offer requirement during the Graduate visa period.
Malta’s equivalent — a “Graduate Seeking Employment” permit — lasts approximately 12 months and applies only to master’s and doctoral (MQF level 7/8) graduates. Bachelor’s graduates from Malta are in a weaker position. The permit requires conversion to a Single Permit on a job offer. The minimum qualification threshold is a catch: if your goal is to work in Malta after a bachelor’s degree, verify your post-study rights with Identità before you enrol.
Scholarship Access
Chevening (all eight African origins) and Commonwealth (Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, Uganda, Zambia — not Zimbabwe) are only available for UK study. GREAT Scholarships cover Nigeria, Ghana, and Kenya for partial tuition (£10,000). There is no comparable international scholarship scheme for Malta.

An arts or business bachelor’s at the University of Malta costs €8,500/year in tuition. Add living costs of approximately €14,400/year (€1,200/month average), the D-visa at €100, the residence permit at €50, and health insurance at approximately €250/year — and your Year 1 total is roughly €23,300 (excluding flights). That converts to approximately ₦36.4M, $26,450 USD, KSh3.43M, or ZAR437,000 at June 2026 rates (re-check: volatile).
The UK’s equivalent for a non-London degree: approximately £30,000 tuition + £10,539 nine-month maintenance + £558 visa + £776/yr IHS = £41,873 in Year 1, before flights. At June 2026 rates that is roughly ₦75.7M, $55,400 USD, or KSh7.18M.
Malta’s first-year cost is meaningfully lower, especially for arts and business subjects.
EU Membership and Schengen Travel
Malta is an EU member state and part of the Schengen zone. Your e-Residence permit (biometric card) allows free Schengen travel within the EU — useful for students who want access to the wider European job market or who plan to travel during study. The UK is outside both the EU and Schengen; a UK Student visa gives access to the UK only.
Language Advantage
English is an official language of Malta, and the University of Malta teaches effectively all its degrees in English. Unlike Germany, where many undergraduate programmes are German-medium, Malta offers full English-medium instruction at both bachelor’s and master’s level without needing a language course first.
The English Test Catch: Neither Country Auto-Exempts African Students
This is one of the most widely misunderstood points in the UK vs Malta comparison.
In the UK: None of the six African origins (Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Zambia, South Africa) is on the Home Office “majority English-speaking country” list. However, UK universities can self-assess English at degree level and commonly waive IELTS for students with strong school English grades (e.g. WASSCE C6, KCSE, NSC, ZIMSEC A-levels) or a recognised medium-of-instruction letter. The waiver is university-by-university — not automatic by nationality.
In Malta (UM): The University of Malta’s English-test exemption list also excludes all six African origins. The waiver route requires holding a UK GCE A-Level or AS-Level English (grade D/E or above), a GCSE English (grade 4/C or above), MATSEC English, or an IB English pass (grade 4+). Alternatively, students can sit UM’s on-campus ISET test instead of IELTS. If you attended a Cambridge-system school in Zimbabwe, Zambia, or Ghana and held GCE/GCSE English, you may qualify for UM’s qualification-based waiver.
In summary: both countries have IELTS alternatives, but neither grants a free pass based solely on African nationality.
Medical Requirements: One Real Difference
The UK requires a pre-arrival TB test for African students on courses longer than six months — done at an IOM clinic, typically costing approximately £75–95 (re-check the current list of approved clinics on gov.uk). This must be done before you travel.
Malta requires a TB chest X-ray within four weeks of arrival (not before) for students from high-risk TB countries. This is done in Malta, not at home. Malta also requires an immunisation certificate on arrival. Neither requirement is onerous, but the timing difference matters for planning.

- You are applying for Chevening or Commonwealth and are eligible
- Your target employer or postgraduate institution values institutional brand (top-100 rankings matter to you)
- You want the longer and more open Graduate Route post-study work period

- You can meet the higher first-year cash requirement
