UK vs Poland for African Students: Cost, Visa and Work Rights

Poland wins on cost: public university tuition is typically €2,000–6,000 per year against £20,000–45,000 per year in the UK, and living costs are a fraction of even a non-London UK city. The UK counters with university rankings, the globally recognised Graduate Route and its English-medium advantage. Budget, scholarship access, career goals and institutional brand decide it.

UK vs Poland for African Students: Cost, Visa and Work Rights

The Cost Comparison: Tuition

This is where the gap is most stark.

Item UK Poland
International tuition — typical BA £20,000–£45,000/year €2,000–6,000/year (public non-medical)
International tuition — typical MA £20,000–£45,000/year €2,000–6,000/year (public non-medical)
Medicine in English £40,000–70,000+/year €15,500–17,000/year (Jagiellonian 2026/27)
Example: UCL Economics BSc £39,200/year (2026/27)
Example: University of Warsaw MA International Relations €4,300/year (2026/27)

Sources: UK figures from gov.uk and UCL official fee pages (June 2026); Poland figures from University of Warsaw official fee schedule and Jagiellonian medical college (both AY2026/27).

The medicine case deserves attention. Polish medical schools — the University of Warsaw, Jagiellonian, and others — offer English-medium 6-year MD programmes for non-EU students at €15,500–17,000/year. The equivalent in the UK runs considerably higher (UCL Medicine MBBS: £57,300/year rising to £69,367 in clinical years as of 2026/27). For aspiring doctors who meet the entry requirements, this is a significant difference.

Living Costs

Item UK (London) UK (outside London) Poland
UKVI maintenance minimum/month £1,529 £1,171
NAWA estimated monthly living (official) 1,500–2,000 PLN (~€330–430)
Student dormitory/month £250–£430+/week (London halls) from ~£118/week (Manchester) €60–150/month
Health coverage IHS £776/year (included in visa) IHS £776/year NFZ ~55.80 PLN/month (~€13)

Sources: UK figures from gov.uk/student-visa/money and UCL accommodation pages (June 2026); Poland figures from study.gov.pl (NAWA official) and NFZ (June 2026). NAWA’s living cost estimate assumes dormitory accommodation — Warsaw private rental is materially higher (approximately 3,000–4,500 PLN/month in the capital).

The gap in living costs is large. A student at a UK non-London university spending at the UKVI minimum (£1,171/month) is spending roughly three times more per month than a NAWA-estimated dorm student in Poland.

Visa Fees and What You Must Prove

Item UK Poland
Student visa fee £558 €200 (national Type D)
Immigration Health Surcharge £776/year (student rate) None — NFZ ~€13/month
Maintenance to prove (9 months) £13,761 London / £10,539 outside London 11,640 PLN living (≈€2,715) + tuition + 2,500 PLN return travel
How funds must be held 28 consecutive days, ending within 31 days of applying Bank balance / sponsor letter at TRP application
Who processes VFS Global (replaced TLScontact Nov 2024) Polish Embassy/Consulate direct (no VFS for most posts)

The UK’s maintenance requirement — proving you hold up to £13,761 in addition to a year’s tuition — is a major hurdle for many self-funded African students. Poland’s living-cost threshold (776 PLN/month × 15 months for a first-year student = 11,640 PLN, plus return travel of 2,500 PLN) is far lower in absolute terms, though you must also show tuition money on top.

A Poland watch-out for Egyptian applicants: Egyptian bank statements are not accepted for the Polish national visa. Funds must be in a non-Egyptian bank. This is an Egypt-specific restriction documented by the Polish Embassy Cairo.

A Poland watch-out for Nigerian applicants: Nigeria was named among the nationalities with the highest Polish visa refusal rates as of our June 2026 research, following a 2024–25 visa integrity clampdown. Document quality and clearly evidenced financial ties to Nigeria matter more than ever.

Work During Study

Parameter UK Poland
Work during term 20 hours/week maximum (degree-level study) No hour limit
Work during vacation Full-time Full-time
Work permit required? No — included in student visa No — students work freely without a work permit
National minimum wage £12.71/hour (Apr 2026) 4,806 PLN/month / 31.40 PLN/hour (Jan 2026)
Self-employment during study No Yes (technically, though employment taxes apply)

Sources: UK from gov.uk/guidance/immigration-rules/immigration-rules-appendix-student; Poland from gov.pl/web/udsc-en/work-student and study.gov.pl (both June 2026).

Poland’s work rights are unusually liberal by EU standards. A full-time student with a residence card can work as many hours as they choose, without needing any additional permit. For students who need part-time work to help cover their costs, Poland’s flexibility is a genuine advantage over the UK’s 20-hour cap.

Post-Study Options

Parameter UK Poland
Post-study visa Graduate Route Graduate job-search TRP
Duration (BA/MA from 2027) 18 months 9 months
Duration (PhD) 3 years 9 months (same rule)
Cost £937 + £1,552.50 IHS (18 months) Covered by standard TRP process
Work restrictions None — any job, any hours, self-employment None — work permit still not required
Path to PR Student/Graduate time does NOT count toward ILR (5-year Skilled Worker required) Study time counts at 50% toward 5-year long-term resident permit

Sources: UK from gov.uk/graduate-visa (June 2026); Poland from gov.pl/web/udsc-en/permit-for-temporary-residence–graduate and gov.pl/web/udsc-en/permit-for-residence-of-a-long-term-eu-resident (June 2026).

The UK’s Graduate Route is longer and more flexible (18 months versus 9 months, covering self-employment). However, Polish time does count — at 50% — toward the 5-year long-term EU resident permit, whereas UK student and graduate time is entirely excluded from the ILR calculation. A student who studies for 3 years in Poland and then works for 3.5 years could reach the 5-year equivalent; the same sequence in the UK requires 5 full years on a Skilled Worker visa on top of all study time.

Scholarships: Who Is Eligible for What?

Scholarship Destination Which African origins are eligible
Chevening UK (Master’s, fully funded) All 8: Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, Uganda, Egypt, Zambia, Zimbabwe
Commonwealth Master’s (CSC) UK (Master’s, fully funded) Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, Uganda, Zambia — NOT Zimbabwe (not Commonwealth) or Egypt
NAWA Banach Poland (Master’s; 2,500 PLN/month + tuition waiver) Nigeria, Kenya — NOT Ghana, Egypt, South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Uganda
NAWA Łukasiewicz Poland (Master’s STEM; tuition-free + stipend) Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, Uganda — NOT Ghana, Egypt, Zambia, Zimbabwe

Sources: World Study Africa verified figures, June 2026; chevening.org; nawa.gov.pl (June 2026).

For Nigerian and Kenyan students, both the Banach (Poland) and Chevening (UK) routes are on the table — a genuinely useful choice. For Ghanaian students, Chevening is the main fully funded European option; the NAWA Banach programme excludes Ghana. For South African and Zambian students, Chevening and the Commonwealth Scholarship are available for the UK; Poland’s national scholarships are more limited.

University Rankings: The UK’s Strongest Card

The QS World University Rankings 2026 illustrate the gap clearly. The UK’s top institutions include Imperial College London (#2), the University of Oxford (#4), the University of Cambridge (#6), and UCL (#9). Poland’s highest-ranked institution is the University of Warsaw at #271.

For students entering management consulting, investment banking, global tech firms, or international development, the UK institution name carries considerably more weight in a global graduate market. This is a real advantage that is difficult to quantify but impossible to ignore.

Polish universities do offer strong programmes — particularly in medicine, IT, and engineering — and the cost savings are large enough that for self-funding families, Poland makes rational sense. But if a Chevening scholarship is within reach, the UK brand at effectively zero cost is hard to argue against.

Who Should Prioritise Which Destination?

Consider the UK if:
– You have access to a scholarship (Chevening, CSC) that removes the cost barrier.
– You are targeting global employers who weight UK institutional names heavily.
– You want English-medium teaching at every level without exception.
– You can realistically demonstrate £10,000–14,000 in maintenance funds (plus tuition) in a bank account held for 28 consecutive days.

Consider Poland if:
– Self-funding a European degree is your primary objective and cost is the binding constraint.
– You are interested in medicine in English at lower cost than the UK.
– You want maximum working flexibility during term-time (no hour cap).
– Your target career is in continental Europe rather than the UK or former Commonwealth markets.
– You are a Nigerian or Kenyan student who qualifies for the NAWA Banach programme.

Frequently asked questions

Substantially, on every cost line. Public university tuition in Poland typically runs €2,000–6,000/year; in the UK, international students pay £20,000–45,000/year. Living costs via NAWA (Poland's official student agency) average 1,500–2,000 PLN/month (roughly €330–430) for a dorm-based student, compared to £1,529/month in London or £1,171/month outside London per UKVI minimums. Medicine is a partial exception — Polish medical schools charge €15,500–17,000/year, which is lower than the UK but still significant.

Yes, more freely than in the UK. Full-time students in Poland on a student visa or temporary residence permit can work without a work permit and face no hour cap — unlike the UK's 20 hours per week limit during term-time. The Polish minimum wage as of January 2026 is 4,806 PLN per month (approximately €1,120). This makes self-funding far more realistic in Poland.

The UK's Graduate Route allows 18 months of open work (any role, any employer, self-employment allowed) for BA/MA graduates from January 2027. Poland offers a 9-month graduate residence permit for job seeking. After that initial period, both countries require a qualified work-based visa. The UK's Graduate Route is longer and more flexible, but also more expensive (£937 visa fee + £1,035/yr IHS).

The UK comfortably. The UK has 17 universities in the QS World Top 100 (2026), including Imperial College London (#2), Oxford (#4), and Cambridge (#6). Poland's top university, the University of Warsaw, is ranked #271 globally. For students who prioritise research output or employer recognition from graduate recruiters, the UK's ranking advantage is real.

Yes, but with different eligibility. In the UK, Chevening is open to all eight African origins in our programme; the Commonwealth Scholarship is open to Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Zambia, and South Africa (not Zimbabwe or Egypt). In Poland, the NAWA Banach scholarship (2,500 PLN/month + tuition waiver) is available to Nigerian and Kenyan nationals — but not Ghanaian, Egyptian, Zambian, Zimbabwean, or South African students.
