PhD in Hungary for African Students
A Hungarian PhD runs 4 to 5 years, is taught and examined in English at most universities, and can be done free on a state or Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship paying HUF 140,000–180,000 per month. Self-funded candidates pay €3,000–10,000 per year instead. State-funded places are capped and allocated by the doctoral schools, so most doctoral candidates in Hungary pay their own fee.
How a PhD works in Hungary
The Hungarian doctorate is Doktori kepzes — doktori fokozat (PhD); DLA (Doctor of Liberal Arts) in the arts. It runs 4 to 5 years and carries 240 credits, set by Act CCIV of 2011 as a minimum of eight semesters.
Those eight semesters split in two. The first four are a training-and-research phase of taught courses, teaching duties and your own research, ending in a comprehensive examination, the komplex vizsga. Pass it and four more semesters of research and dissertation follow, ending in the public defence. A justified one-year extension is allowed, which is where the fifth year comes from.
The model is both. You enrol in a structured doctoral school, a doktori iskola, and work under a named supervisor inside it. Enrolment in a doctoral school is also the only route to a state-funded place, so a private arrangement with a professor is not a substitute for it. Candidates who prepare individually outside the training can still be admitted to the defence, but they fund themselves.
Starts are September, February, and September dominates. English is enough at most universities (yes): Hungarian is not required by an English-taught doctoral school, though you will want some for daily life.
How PhDs are funded — and what you are paid
Hungary does not employ its doctoral candidates.
Three named mechanisms, none of them an employment contract — doctoral candidates hold student legal status, not staff status. (1) The Hungarian state doctoral scholarship (allami doktori osztondij) on a capped number of state-funded places, approximately 2,000 nationally across all years, allocated by the doctoral schools. (2) The Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship for non-EU applicants, which pays the same monthly amounts, exempts the holder from tuition in full and adds a housing contribution and health insurance for the whole four years. (3) Self-funded study, which is what the majority of Hungarian doctoral candidates do — Eurydice records that state-funded places are limited and most doctoral students pay a fee and work alongside their studies. Several universities top the national rate up from their own funds (the University of Szeged announced up to HUF 400,000 per month for its doctoral schools in July 2026).
The published rate is HUF 140,000–180,000 per month — the lower figure through the training-and-research semesters, the higher one after the komplex vizsga. It is paid as a scholarship, not a salary: no employer deduction stands between that amount and your account, and no pension or employment record builds up.
Without an award you pay €3,000–10,000 per year. Stipendium Hungaricum is the route that removes that bill for non-EU applicants, and it funds bachelor, master, phd, short-course, language-course. Your passport decides eligibility before anyone reads your file: Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Egypt, South Africa and Morocco are sending partners, Uganda is restricted, and Zambia and Zimbabwe hold no agreement, so their nationals cannot apply. Entry requirements for a PhD
You need a completed master’s degree. Stipendium Hungaricum states it plainly — Secondary school leaving certificate for bachelor and one-tier master; bachelor degree for master; master degree for doctoral. — and doctoral schools apply the same standard to self-funded applicants. An African master’s is judged on its content. Recognition for admission is the admitting university’s decision, with formal equivalence through the University + Hungarian Equivalence Centre. Documents must be apostilled (yes); no APS certificate is needed (no), a German requirement with no role here. No national minimum grade for doctoral entry is published, so each doctoral school sets its own bar.
Two things outweigh the transcript. The first is a written research proposal that matches the doctoral school’s declared research areas — Szeged asks for roughly ten pages. The second is a named supervisor who accepts you. Most doctoral schools then examine you orally or online before admitting you, so the proposal and that examination, not the certificate, are what you prepare for. English is set programme by programme, above the national master’s floor of IELTS 6.
Universities and doctoral schools to look at

University of Debrecen ranks #563 (QS 2026) and teaches every doctoral programme in English, from medicine to agriculture and business. Fees run US$6,500–12,500 per year, billed in dollars.
University of Szeged, #633 (QS 2027), is strong in medicine, pharmacy and health, charges €3,500–5,000 per semester and requires an online oral examination.
Eötvös Loránd University, #584 (QS 2026), covers natural sciences, informatics, humanities and law, at a confirmed €3,000 per semester.
Budapest University of Technology and Economics runs 11 English-taught doctoral programmes in engineering, computer science and architecture at €4,500–5,000 per semester.
University of Pécs, 791–800 (QS 2027), spans medicine, engineering, law and humanities, with an engineering doctoral fee of US$4,200 per semester; other faculties publish none.
Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences in Gödöllő teaches all doctoral programmes in English — agriculture, food science, environmental science — at €2,000–6,000 per semester, falling in the dissertation phase.
Corvinus University of Budapest is the business and economics option, ranked 401–450 (Business & Management Studies) (QS 2026), at €8,000 per year.
University of Miskolc is the cheaper engineering route — mechanical, materials and earth sciences — at €3,500 per semester, in a city costing €450–600 per month.
How to apply for a PhD in Hungary
- Shortlist two or three doctoral schools whose research areas match your topic, and check the language of instruction and the fee.
- Write the research proposal — Szeged asks for about ten pages, Pécs that it align with the school’s declared areas. Set out the question, the method, the data and a four-year timetable.
- Approach a supervisor by email with the proposal and your CV, and get their acceptance in writing. Doctoral schools expect it before considering a file.
- Decide the funding route; the calendars differ: 15 May 2027 for the September 2027 start (University of Debrecen and University of Szeged both 15 May; University of Pecs 15 May), around 1 November 2027 for a February 2028 start where a doctoral school offers one, and 15 January 2027, 14:00 CET for Stipendium Hungaricum.
- Apply through the doctoral school’s own online system, or https://stipendiumhungaricum.hu/ for the scholarship. Attach the apostilled master’s certificate and transcript, the proposal, your CV and an English certificate.
- Sit the entrance examination, usually oral or online, on your proposal and your field (yes for scholarship candidates).
- Accept the place, settle the first semester’s fee if self-funded, and collect the letter of acceptance.

Visa, family and life as a doctoral candidate
A doctoral candidate applies for the same Residence permit for studies (applied abroad) as a taught student, because doctoral candidates hold student legal status. The separate research permit is not this route: it needs a hosting agreement and applies to employed researchers. The fee is €110 and you file at Hungarian embassies in Abuja, Accra, Nairobi, Cairo, Pretoria; Uganda/Zambia/Zimbabwe via Nairobi/Pretoria. You may work 30 hours/week in term and 90 days (or 66 working days) full-time per year outside it, with no separate work permit (no). Your family cannot follow on your permit: since January 2024 a study permit no longer supports family-member permits, a four-to-five-year separation to plan for. - Funded places are capped and allocated by the doctoral schools. Most doctoral candidates in Hungary pay a fee and work alongside the research, so plan for that case.
- Stipendium Hungaricum is closed to Zambian and Zimbabwean nationals whatever the file, and Uganda’s listing is restricted.
- The money is thin. HUF 140,000–180,000 per month sits below Budapest living costs of €600–900 per month, and the minimum wage benchmark is HUF 322,800 per month.
- You are a student, not staff: no employment contract, no pension accrual, and study time does not count towards the three-year residence requirement for permanent residence.
- Your spouse and children cannot join you on your permit, and the commitment is 4 to 5 years.
