The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC) administers UK government scholarships under the Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan. Eligibility is tied to Commonwealth membership, with an additional development-income criterion for most schemes.

If you are from Zimbabwe or Egypt, the Chevening Scholarship is a separate UK government scholarship open to both countries.

The CSC’s Main Schemes for African Students

The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission runs several distinct scholarship schemes. The most relevant for African applicants pursuing a one-year Master’s in the UK are:

Commonwealth Masters Scholarships
Full scholarships for citizens of low- and middle-income Commonwealth countries to study a one-year Master’s at a UK university. Selection is based on academic merit and the potential impact of your proposed study in your home country. Award typically includes full tuition, a monthly living allowance, travel and an arrival allowance.

Commonwealth Shared Scholarships
Jointly funded by the CSC and UK universities. These scholarships are specifically for students from developing Commonwealth countries and cover fields aligned to development priorities. The 2026/27 cycle opened 12 November 2025 and closed 9 December 2025 — the tightest window of any major UK scholarship scheme. Based on this pattern, the 2027/28 cycle is expected to open around November 2026.

Commonwealth PhD Scholarships
Full funding for doctoral study at a UK university. Selection criteria emphasise research quality and development impact. Application routes and timelines differ from the Masters and Shared schemes — check the CSC website for the PhD-specific schedule.

Commonwealth Distance Learning Scholarships
For candidates who wish to pursue a UK Master’s degree while remaining in their home country. These scholarships are administered through UK universities and have a separate application route and timeline from the in-person schemes.

When to Expect the 2027/28 Cycle to Open

The CSC has not published 2027/28 application dates as of this post (October 2026). Based on the 2026/27 Shared Scholarship pattern — applications opened 12 November 2025, closed 9 December 2025, for a September 2026 start — you should expect the 2027/28 window to open approximately November 2026 and close approximately December 2026.

This is a very short window. Students who have not researched programmes, identified a UK university and course, and begun their application documents before November will be under significant time pressure.

How the Application Route Works

⚠️ You do not apply directly to the CSC. This is the most common misconception about Commonwealth Scholarships.

The process:

1. Identify your national nominating agency. Each eligible country has a designated nominating body — typically a government ministry of education, a national scholarships board, or a development agency. The CSC publishes the list at cscuk.fcdo.gov.uk.
2. Apply to the nominating agency before their internal deadline. The nominating agency has its own earlier cutoff — often several weeks before the CSC’s window closes. Missing the internal deadline means your application cannot be forwarded.
3. The nominating agency selects candidates and forwards them to the CSC. Only nominated candidates proceed to CSC assessment.
4. The CSC assesses nominations and makes awards. Successful applicants are notified by the CSC and then apply for a UK Student visa independently.

Because each country’s internal deadline differs, the only reliable source of your country-specific cutoff is your national nominating agency — not the CSC website.

What the Scholarship Covers

Commonwealth Scholarships are full-funding awards. The typical package for a one-year Master’s scholarship includes:

• Full tuition fees, paid directly to the UK university
• Monthly living allowance for the duration of the programme
• Return airfare to the UK (economy class)
• Arrival allowance
• Thesis grant (for PhD scholars)

The exact amounts are set by the CSC and confirmed in the award letter. Re-check current rates at cscuk.fcdo.gov.uk — do not rely on third-party summaries, which are often out of date.

What the Scholarship Does Not Cover

Commonwealth Scholarships do not cover the UK Student Visa application fee (£558 as of June 2026) or the Immigration Health Surcharge (£776 per year of your visa, paid upfront). These are out-of-pocket costs for the scholar. The scholarship also does not cover dependants’ living costs or fares unless a family allowance is specifically awarded.

What to Prepare Now (October 2026)

If you are reading this when the post publishes, the expected application window for 2027/28 is approximately four to six weeks away. Use this time to:

• Identify a specific UK Master’s programme (the CSC expects a named course and university in your application)
• Contact your national nominating agency to confirm their internal deadline and required documents
• Draft your personal statement around the development impact of your proposed study in your home country — this is what CSC reviewers assess
• Request references from academic or professional contacts who can speak to your field and your potential for impact
