Is Thanaweya Amma Accepted by European Universities?

Thanaweya Amma is recognised as a valid school-leaving qualification across Europe, but it does not open the door to direct bachelor's entry at most universities. Germany requires a minimum of one year's study at an Egyptian university, or enrolment in a Studienkolleg foundation programme; UK universities typically require a Foundation year. Egyptian degrees are accepted for postgraduate entry everywhere.

Is Thanaweya Amma Accepted by European Universities?

What Is Thanaweya Amma — and What Does Europe See?

Thanaweya Amma (الثانوية العامة), Egypt’s General Secondary Education Certificate, is the national exam taken at the end of secondary school and used as the public-university entrance basis in Egypt. Following reforms that took effect from the 2024/25 examination cycle, the exam now covers five graded core subjects marked out of 100 each (total 500 marks), with approximately 85% of questions in multiple-choice format and 15% short essay. A second foreign language, geology, psychology and religious studies are assessed on a pass/fail basis only (AACRAO EDGE, 2026).

European credential evaluators classify Thanaweya Amma as roughly equivalent to a secondary school leaving certificate — comparable to GCSEs plus A-levels in the UK framework, but not always benchmarked to the level European universities require for direct undergraduate entry. The practical consequence differs by destination.

Is Thanaweya Amma Accepted in Europe? Country-by-Country

Germany: Studienkolleg or Prior University Study Required

Thanaweya Amma alone is not sufficient for direct bachelor’s entry at German universities. The German higher-education system sets entry requirements via the Anabin database and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), both of which classify the Thanaweya Amma below the standard for direct undergraduate admission.

To apply for a German bachelor’s degree, Egyptian school-leavers must either:

  1. Complete one year at an accredited Egyptian university, after which they can apply for German bachelor’s entry with their Egyptian transcript, or
  2. Attend a Studienkolleg in Germany — a one-year preparatory course leading to the Feststellungsprüfung (FSP) assessment exam, which grants full university admission.

The Studienkolleg route is available inside Germany; places are limited and competitive (Studienkolleg.org, 2026).

For Master’s level there is no such barrier: a recognised Egyptian Bachelor’s degree (four-year or five/six-year in medicine, engineering and pharmacy) is accepted for German graduate-programme applications.

No APS required. Germany’s Akademische Prüfstelle credential check applies only to applicants from China, Vietnam and India. Egyptian applicants are not required to obtain an APS certificate — a common misconception. What you do need is document legalisation and translation (see below).

United Kingdom: Foundation Year for School-Leavers

UK universities generally require a Foundation year for students presenting Thanaweya Amma as their sole qualification. According to Birkbeck’s Egypt country guidance — a reliable published benchmark — Thanaweya Amma alone is not considered equivalent to A-levels for direct Year 1 entry (Birkbeck, 2026).

Students from Egypt’s private or international schools who hold an IGCSE, American Diploma or IB are not subject to this restriction: these qualifications are well-recognised by UK universities and often allow direct entry, provided grades are sufficient.

For Master’s programmes, a recognised Egyptian Bachelor’s from a reputable public or private Egyptian university is accepted. Degrees from “higher institutes” (المعاهد العليا) may be assessed as equivalent only to a Foundation-level qualification; if your degree is from one of these institutions, check with the admitting university before applying.

UK ENIC offers a Statement of Comparability for applicants whose credentials require formal UK recognition (UK ENIC).

Ireland, Malta, Cyprus, Hungary and Poland

For undergraduate entry at these destinations, the situation is similar: Thanaweya Amma is assessed on a case-by-case basis via each country’s ENIC-NARIC network or institution. In practice, many universities will ask for a Foundation year or equivalent prior university study before admitting school-leavers.

For postgraduate entry (Master’s and PhD), an Egyptian Bachelor’s degree from a recognised institution is generally accepted across all these destinations, assessed via:

  • Ireland — QQI/NARIC Ireland
  • Malta — MQRIC
  • Cyprus (Republic of Cyprus only, never TRNC) — KYSATS / Cyprus ENIC-NARIC
  • Hungary and Poland — institutional assessment with ENIC-NARIC support; Poland may additionally require nostrification unless a bilateral agreement applies

Check directly with your target university before assuming your credentials satisfy entry conditions.

The Egyptian Baccalaureate: What’s Changing from 2025/26

Egypt is introducing an optional alternative to Thanaweya Amma — the Egyptian Baccalaureate — phased in from the 2025/26 academic year. It operates on approximately a 700-point scale, offers four subject tracks (Medicine & Life Sciences; Business; Engineering & Computer Science; Humanities & Arts), includes two years of continuous assessment, and permits retakes (Ahram Online, 2026; Egyptian Streets, 2025).

The first cohort will graduate around 2027. European credential evaluators — including Anabin (Germany), UK ENIC and the various NARIC bodies — have not yet established formal recognition policies for the new certificate. If you hold an Egyptian Baccalaureate, contact each target university’s admissions office directly and allow extra time for their assessment.

Document Requirements: No Apostille, Consular Legalisation Only

This is the single most common document mistake Egyptian students make.

Egypt is not a party to the Hague Apostille Convention (as of June 2026; confirmed against the HCCH status table). That means you cannot attach a standard apostille sticker to your Thanaweya Amma certificate or other documents to have them recognised abroad. Instead, all academic certificates and civil documents must go through traditional consular legalisation:

  1. Authentication by Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs
  2. Legalisation at the destination country’s embassy in Cairo

For Germany, all documents must also be officially translated into German or English by a certified translator. Most German universities additionally require a uni-assist VPD (Vorprüfungsdokumentation) — a standardised pre-check of your documents by uni-assist before your application is forwarded to the university (uni-assist Egypt page). Check whether your target university requires this, as it is not universal.

English Language Requirements

Egypt’s official language is Arabic, so IELTS or TOEFL is typically required by European universities unless your prior education was delivered fully in English. Students from the American University in Cairo (AUC) or English-medium private universities in Egypt can often request a Medium-of-Instruction waiver — but each university sets its own policy, so check the specific institution’s page before assuming you qualify.

Frequently asked questions

Not usually. Most UK universities ask students with Thanaweya Amma to complete a Foundation year first before entering Year 1 of a bachelor's programme. Students who already have a strong Egyptian Bachelor's degree can apply for UK Master's programmes without a Foundation year.

No. Germany's APS (Akademische Prüfstelle) credential-verification requirement applies only to applicants from China, Vietnam and India. Egyptian students applying to Germany are not required to obtain an APS certificate. You will, however, need your documents legalised and translated, and many universities require a uni-assist VPD.

The Egyptian Baccalaureate is an optional alternative to Thanaweya Amma being phased in from the 2025/26 academic year. It runs on a roughly 700-point scale with four subject tracks and allows retakes. European universities are still developing recognition policies for it; as the first graduates complete the programme around 2027, expect credential evaluators such as UK ENIC and Anabin (Germany) to update their guidance.
