Proof of Funds for a Hungary Student Visa: How Much & How to Show It
Hungary publishes no proof-of-funds figure for a student residence permit — there is no official EUR threshold or Germany-style blocked account. The National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing (OIF) states only that you must prove sufficient resources for subsistence, accommodation, return travel and healthcare from legally acquired income and savings, assessed case by case. You need a credible financial picture.
Why There Is No Fixed Number
Hungary does not use a blocked-account system. Unlike Germany (where the law fixes the amount at €11,904/year and requires a specific account type), Hungary’s immigration authority reviews your overall financial picture. The practical implication is that the consulate assessing your application has discretion — which is why document quality and completeness matter more here than in Germany.
The four documents the OIF formally accepts as proof of resources are:
- A credit-institution certificate in your name (bank statement or savings-account certificate)
- A notarised maintenance declaration from a family member, accompanied by proof of their income and means
- Regular-income documentation in your name
- A scholarship certificate (if you hold a scholarship)
All four must relate to funds from “legally acquired income and savings.” Alongside this, the OIF also requires proof of paid tuition, proof of valid health insurance, and proof of return-travel funds as separate documents in your file.

Watch the billing unit at Semmelweis. Semmelweis University quotes Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy in USD per semester — so USD 10,450/semester = approximately USD 20,900 per year. Do not confuse the semester figure with the annual figure.
How to Structure Your Bank Statement
Whether you use a personal bank statement or a family sponsor’s documents, the account should show:
- Consistent balance — not a single large deposit made the week before the statement (a sudden “dump” of funds raises officer concern)
- Balance sufficient to cover living for at least one academic year (~€7,000) on top of insurance and airfare
- The statement must be recent (most consulates want the last three to six months)
- Statements from a recognised financial institution in your country of residence
If you are using a family sponsor, the notarised declaration must be accompanied by their recent bank statements or income proof — not just a signed letter. The family member does not need a Hungarian bank account.
Health Insurance: What Counts
Hungary requires comprehensive health insurance for enrolment and for the residence permit. Self-funded non-EU students are not automatically covered by Hungarian state health insurance.
The most practical route is a commercial student policy — the University of Pécs recommends Generali’s STUDIUM policy, which costs approximately HUF 120,000 per year (roughly €300 at June 2026 rates). Some universities include basic health insurance within the medical programme tuition fee (Szeged and Debrecen do this for medical students) — check with your university before purchasing a separate policy.

Step-by-Step: Building Your Financial File
Step 1 — Pay tuition first. Get a tuition-paid receipt or a university confirmation letter. This is a required document and removes tuition from your “resources to prove” calculation.
Step 2 — Prepare your bank statement. Ensure a balance of at least €7,000 (preferably €8,000–9,000 to include a buffer). The account should show a consistent history, not a recent spike.
Step 3 — Secure health insurance. Obtain a policy with full coverage valid in Hungary before submitting your application. Keep the original certificate and a certified translation if issued in a language other than English or Hungarian.
Step 4 — Evidence return travel. This can be a purchased return ticket, proof of available funds specifically designated for return, or a declaration — check with the specific consulate what format they accept.
Step 5 — Gather sponsor documents if applicable. If using a family sponsor: notarised declaration + their bank statements + their income documentation (payslips, employment contract, tax return). All should be recent and translated if necessary.
Step 6 — Apply at the Hungarian consulate. The residence-permit application is submitted abroad at a Hungarian consulate (it includes the visa component). The consulate issues a single-entry type-D entry visa valid for up to 30 days and three months, allowing you to enter Hungary and collect your residence-permit card there.

Stipendium Hungaricum: No Funds Proof Required
If you hold a Stipendium Hungaricum (SH) scholarship, the financial picture is completely different. SH covers:

- Free dormitory accommodation or HUF 40,000/month accommodation contribution
