Spring 2027 Visa Season: Your Student Visa Documents Checklist
Every European student visa application in spring 2027 requires a valid passport, an unconditional university acceptance, and proof of financial means. What changes by country is the specific funds threshold, whether pre-arrival medical tests are required, and which Visa Application Centre handles your file. All seven destinations are covered. Get one wrong and you wait twelve months.
Universal Documents: Every Destination Requires These
Regardless of whether you are applying to Germany, the UK, Ireland, Malta, Cyprus, Hungary, or Poland, every visa application needs:
1. A valid passport. It must remain valid for the full duration of your intended stay, plus a margin of at least three to six months beyond that. Some embassies will not accept a passport that expires within the first year of your studies. Apply for renewal now if your document is close to expiry.
2. An unconditional offer letter from your university. A conditional offer is not sufficient for most visa applications. You need the university to have accepted you without outstanding requirements. For Germany, this means a formal Zulassung (admission) document. For the UK, a CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) reference number issued by your university replaces the paper letter.
3. Proof of financial means. The amount and format differ by destination (see the table below), but the principle is the same: verifiable evidence that the money exists, is accessible to you, and has a traceable source. Bank statements should cover three to six months of history unless the destination specifies otherwise.
4. Passport-size photographs. Follow the exact format specified by the embassy or application centre — biometric requirements differ. Produce more than you think you need; you will use them at multiple stages.
5. Completed visa application form. Each destination has its own form. Fill it accurately; inconsistencies between your form and your supporting documents are a common reason for delays or refusals.
6. Proof of paid visa fee. See the destination table for current fee amounts (June 2026 figures; re-check before you pay).
7. Health insurance. Requirements differ by stage and by destination — see below. At minimum, all Schengen-zone applicants (Germany, Hungary, Poland, Malta) need Schengen-compliant travel or health insurance for the visa stage.
8. Academic transcripts and qualifications. Official certified copies of all secondary and higher qualifications. Apostille required for Nigeria and Ghana; consular or ministry legalisation for Kenya, Uganda, and Zambia; apostille for South Africa. Egypt: consular legalisation. Confirm the exact format with the destination embassy.
Proof-of-Funds Requirements by Destination (as of June 2026)
All figures in this table are from our June 2026 verification round. Fees and thresholds can change. Re-check the official embassy or immigration website before you pay.
| Destination | Proof of Funds Required | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Germany | €11,904 blocked account (€992/mo, released monthly) | Must be a recognised blocked account from an approved provider; not a regular savings account |
| Hungary | No fixed published threshold | Advise: evidence of tuition paid + approximately €7,000/yr living + insurance + return airfare |
| Poland | 776 PLN/mo living × duration + tuition + 2,500 PLN return travel | Consulates often expect bank balances of 2,000–2,500 PLN/mo in practice |
| Malta | ≈€746/mo at D-visa stage; ≈€950/mo at residence permit stage | Two separate assessments; bring documentation for both |
| Cyprus | Bank balance; UCY recommends ≈€7,000 | No national fixed threshold — institution-referenced guidance only; bank guarantee or blocked deposit common |
| Ireland | €10,000 + full course fees secured | Increased from 30 June 2025; evidence required for each subsequent year too |
| United Kingdom | £10,539 (outside London) / £13,761 (London) held 28 consecutive days | Bank statements must show funds consistently held; large recent deposits scrutinised |
Visa application fee per destination: Germany €75 · Hungary €110 · Poland €200 (National/Type-D, in force since January 2026) · Malta ~€100 · Cyprus €55–140 (residence permit) · Ireland €60–€100 · UK £558 plus IHS £776 per year of study.
Destination-Specific Extras
United Kingdom — Three Requirements Other Destinations Do Not Have
CAS number. Your university generates this unique reference only after confirming your place. You cannot apply for a UK student visa without it. Once your unconditional offer is issued, contact the university’s international office to request your CAS promptly — some institutions take weeks.
Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS). Paid upfront for the full length of your visa at £776 per year of study. A three-year undergraduate visa means £2,328 due before your visa is approved. This is non-refundable if your application is refused.
TB certificate. All African applicants for UK student visas with courses longer than six months must provide a tuberculosis test certificate from an IOM-approved clinic in their country. The test costs approximately £75–95 / USD 94 (as of June 2026). Book early — popular IOM clinic slots fill up. Source: UK government TB test guidance.
UK visa applications go through VFS Global, which replaced TLScontact as the UK Visa Application Centre operator in November 2024.
Germany — Blocked Account, Not a Bank Statement
Germany does not accept a regular bank statement as proof of funds for enrolled students. You need a blocked account (Sperrkonto) from a recognised provider, showing a minimum of €11,904 deposited. The account releases exactly €992 per month to you once you arrive — it is your living budget for the year, not a fee you lose. Set up and fund this account before you submit your visa application, as the confirmation letter from the provider is a required document.
Germany does not require a TB test. APS certificate: not needed for any of our eight African origins.
Cyprus — Pre-Arrival Medical Certificates
Cyprus is an EU member state but is not in the Schengen Zone. The residence permit process requires medical certificates covering HIV, Hepatitis B and C, syphilis, and a TB chest X-ray. These tests are typically done in your home country before you travel, then verified on arrival. Budget time for clinic appointments before your departure date. The permit fee is €55–140. Cyprus visa applications for Nigeria and Ghana go via the Cyprus Embassy in Cairo — not via a local mission.
Malta — Two-Stage Financial Assessment
Malta’s D-visa and subsequent e-Residence permit are separate processes with different financial thresholds. The visa stage requires evidence of approximately €746 per month. The permit stage — after you arrive — requires €950 per month (excluding tuition). Bring documentation for both. Health insurance at the visa stage requires Schengen cover of at least €30,000; University of Malta, MCAST, and ITS students are exempt at the permit stage, but private college students need €100,000 coverage.
Ireland — Ghana Applies Via Abuja
Irish student visa applications are handled through Irish embassies and consulates — not every country has one in-country. Ghana must apply via the Irish Embassy in Abuja, Nigeria. There is no Irish visa office in Accra. Kenya can apply via VFS Nairobi (from 15 May 2026). Check irishimmigration.ie to confirm the correct application point for your nationality.
Ireland’s proof-of-funds requirement is €10,000 for living costs, plus evidence that your full tuition fees are paid or secured. This threshold was confirmed effective 30 June 2025. Source: Irish Immigration Service.
Poland — Note on Bank Statements
Polish consulates have returned or refused applications where bank evidence was considered insufficient. The required minimum is 776 PLN per month for living expenses, plus your tuition fees, plus a 2,500 PLN return travel allowance. In practice, consulates often look for significantly higher balances — approximately 2,000–2,500 PLN per month — to demonstrate sustainable financial capacity. The student visa for Poland is a National/Type-D visa at €200 (this replaced the previous lower fee from 1 January 2026).
Common Document Mistakes That Delay Applications
Missing the 28-day rule (UK). UK Home Office requires your maintenance funds to have been held in your account for 28 consecutive days ending no more than 31 days before your application date. A large transfer that appeared two weeks before your application is a frequent refusal reason.
Using the wrong authentication method. Sending apostilled documents to a country that does not recognise apostille (or vice versa) causes the application to be returned. Confirm the exact legalisation route for your origin and your destination before you begin.
Applying at the wrong post. See the Ireland/Ghana and Cyprus/Nigeria-Ghana examples above. Wrong application point = returned application, lost time.
Incomplete health insurance documentation. Malta and Cyprus have specific coverage amounts. Standard travel insurance from a supermarket comparison site typically does not meet their requirements. Get a policy document that states the coverage limit explicitly.
Sending unedged documents. Some embassies require original documents or original certified copies — photocopies of photocopies are rejected. Confirm exactly what “certified copy” means for each destination (certified by a notary, by the institution, or by the embassy).
Your Spring 2027 Visa Timeline
For a September 2027 start:
- March–April: Secure unconditional offer; start gathering documents; open blocked account (Germany); book TB test (UK)
- May: Complete document set; submit visa application
- June: Respond promptly to any embassy requests for additional information
- July: Receive visa decision; book travel if approved
- August: Pre-departure health checks; arrange accommodation; sort in-country arrival steps
Do not leave the visa application until July. Even countries with shorter processing times have backlogs in peak season. An incomplete application restarts the clock entirely.

Frequently asked questions
Submit as soon as you hold an unconditional offer and every document is ready — ideally by May or June 2027 for a September start. Most European student visa processing times run four to twelve weeks for complete applications. An incomplete submission restarts the clock. Do not wait until August; even fast-processing countries have queues in peak season.
Not necessarily for the visa itself — some countries assess English through university admission, not at the visa stage. What matters more is that your chosen university has accepted your language evidence, since the acceptance letter is the core visa document. Germany, Hungary, and Poland often accept German-language or English-medium programmes with a university-verified statement. Always confirm with your target institution.
The TB (tuberculosis) test is a chest X-ray or blood test required by the UK for all student visa applicants from African countries when the course is longer than six months. It must be done at an IOM-approved clinic in your country. The test costs approximately £75–95 (around USD 94) as of June 2026. No other European destination in our network requires a pre-entry TB test — this is a UK-specific requirement.
Proof of funds means documented evidence that you have access to the required amount of money before your visa is issued. For Germany it is a blocked bank account holding €11,904 (released at €992 per month while you study). For the UK it is a bank statement showing at least £10,539 (outside London) held consistently for 28 days before your application. For Ireland it is evidence of €10,000 plus your full tuition fees secured. The documents differ, but the principle is the same: verified, available, and yours.
It will be returned or rejected. Ghana students applying for Ireland visas must do so via the Irish Embassy in Abuja — there is no Irish visa office in Accra. Nigeria and Ghana students applying for Cyprus visas go via Cairo. Applying at the wrong post adds weeks and potentially a refusal. Confirm your specific application point before you pay any fees.
