Staying in Hungary After You Graduate: Your Options

Hungary gives graduates a 9-month window to seek work or start a business before they must hold a work permit or leave, and that job-seeking permit is not extendable. Longer-term settlement runs through an employment permit, EU Blue Card, or Hungarian Card — and, critically, years spent as a student do not count toward permanent residence, per official OIF factsheets.

Staying in Hungary After You Graduate: Your Options

Step 1: The Job-Seeking Permit (9 Months)

What It Is

The official name is the Residence Permit for the Purpose of Seeking a Job or Starting a Business. It is issued by the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing (OIF) and gives you a 9-month window to find employment or establish a business in Hungary after completing your degree.

Key Facts

  • Duration: Maximum 9 months. Not extendable. This is a firm limit.
  • Applies to: All graduates regardless of level — BA, MA or PhD. There is no separate graduate visa based on degree level.
  • Scope: Must be related to your completed studies. You cannot graduate in engineering and use the permit to pursue an unrelated field.
  • How to apply: Inside Hungary, via the Enter Hungary online platform (enterhungary.gov.hu). Apply at least 15 days before your study permit expires. You must still hold a valid study permit when you submit the application.
  • Biometrics required: Yes — facial photo, fingerprints and signature.

What It Does Not Do

This permit does not allow you to work while seeking a job. It is a transitional permit, not a work authorisation. You need a separate employment permit once you have a job offer.

It also does not pause the clock on anything related to long-term residence — see Step 4 below.

Step 2: Converting to a Work Permit

Once you have a job offer, you apply to convert your status to an employment permit or one of the special residence categories. The main options are:

Employment / Hungarian Card

The Hungarian Card is the employment permit route for third-country nationals who have a job with a Hungarian employer. This is the standard route for most graduates who find work. Duration is tied to the employment contract. This permit begins the clock toward permanent residence.

EU Blue Card

The EU Blue Card is for highly qualified workers. In Hungary (as of June 2026, per the official OIF factsheet), the salary requirements are:

Occupation category Minimum gross monthly salary
General (most fields) HUF 1,001,048/month
Shortage occupations (incl. certain healthcare) HUF 800,838/month

At the June 2026 minimum wage of HUF 322,800/month, the general Blue Card threshold is roughly 3.1× the minimum wage. This is a meaningful bar — it targets roles in medicine, engineering, IT, finance and management rather than entry-level positions.

The Blue Card is worth pursuing if you qualify, because it offers advantages for the EU long-term residence path (see Step 4).

Guest Self-Employment

If you are starting a business, the Guest Self-Employment permit covers self-employed individuals. The conditions, fees and income thresholds are set separately and should be verified on the current OIF factsheet before applying.

Step 3: What Comes After the Work Permit

Once on a work-based permit, you can renew it as long as your employment or self-employment continues. Most employment permits are issued for the length of the work contract, renewable. There is no fixed cap on duration at this stage — the permit follows your employment.

Step 4: The Path to Permanent Residence

This is the most important section for long-term planning — and the one where Hungary’s rules differ significantly from what many students expect.

National Permanent Residence (3-Year Route)

After 3 years of continuous legal residence, you can apply for the National Residence Card (permanent residence). The catch: time spent on a study permit does not count toward those 3 years. The job-seeking permit does not count either.

Your 3-year PR clock starts only when you first hold a qualifying permit — an employment permit, Hungarian Card, EU Blue Card, or similar work-based status. If you complete a 3-year degree and spend 9 months on the job-seeking permit, you are still at zero on the PR clock when you start your first job. You then need at least 3 more years of continuous employment-based residence before you can apply.

Minimum total timeline: 3-year degree + 9 months job-seeking + 3 years employment = 6 years 9 months before you can apply for national permanent residence. In practice, most people are looking at 7–10 years of life in Hungary before PR is accessible.

EU Long-Term Residence (5-Year Route)

After 5 years of continuous legal residence, you can apply for EU long-term resident status. The rules here are slightly more complex. For most permit types, study-permit time still does not count toward the 5-year EU aggregation.

Exception for Blue Card holders: if you have held an EU Blue Card for at least 2 years in Hungary immediately before applying, prior study or research time in other EU member states (not necessarily Hungary) can count toward the 5-year total under EU aggregation rules. This is a narrow benefit — it does not help if you studied in Hungary and want to count that time, but it can help Blue Card holders who previously studied in Germany, Ireland or elsewhere in the EU.

Permit type PR route Does study time count?
Employment / Hungarian Card National PR (3 yrs) ❌ No
EU Blue Card EU long-term resident (5 yrs) ❌ No (Hungary study); EU aggregation possible for prior EU study
Study permit ❌ Does not count for any PR route
Job-seeking permit ❌ Does not count for any PR route

Salary Benchmarks and Realistic Job Prospects

To put the Blue Card threshold in context: the 2026 Hungary minimum wage is HUF 322,800/month gross. The guaranteed minimum for skilled workers (those with a secondary or vocational qualification) is HUF 373,200/month. The Blue Card general threshold of HUF 1,001,048 is roughly 3.1× the basic minimum.

For medicine and healthcare graduates, the lower Blue Card threshold (HUF 800,838/month) is more attainable — specialist doctors in Hungarian hospitals earn above this level. For engineering and IT graduates, Hungary’s growing tech sector in Budapest (and to a lesser degree Debrecen and Győr) offers roles in this range. Business and humanities graduates will typically start below Blue Card level and move up over time.

The official Study in Hungary portal estimates student net earnings from part-time work at approximately €445–550/month (unskilled to skilled). Full-time graduate salaries in Hungary vary widely by field and city — these should be researched per sector before you decide to stay post-graduation.

The One-Permit-at-a-Time Rule

Hungarian immigration rules require that you hold your study permit until your new permit is approved. You should not let your study permit lapse. The Enter Hungary platform is the mechanism for seamless in-country transition. If you are outside Hungary when your study permit expires and have not yet converted to another permit, re-entry on the basis of the job-seeking permit requires separate planning.

How This Compares to Other Destinations

Country Post-study work Does study time count for PR?
Hungary 9 months (non-extendable) ❌ No
Germany 18 months to seek related work ✅ Partial (some study counts)
United Kingdom 18 months (from 1 Jan 2027, reduced from 2 yrs) Study counts partially
Ireland Stamp 1G (typically 1 yr) Varies

Hungary’s 9-month window is shorter than Germany’s 18-month post-study permit. For students seriously planning long-term settlement, Germany offers a more favourable PR pathway for the study years invested. That is an honest comparison worth knowing before you choose your destination.

Practical Checklist for Graduating Students

  1. Start your job search before you graduate — 9 months sounds long, but with permit processing times, it goes quickly.
  2. Apply via Enter Hungary at least 15 days before your study permit expires. Late applications risk a gap in legal status.
  3. Aim for a job that meets or approaches Blue Card salary if long-term settlement is your goal — the PR timeline advantage (EU aggregation) is meaningful.
  4. Do not count your study years toward PR — reset your expectations, plan for 7+ years total if full permanent residence is the goal.
  5. Medical graduates: the healthcare shortage-occupation Blue Card threshold (HUF 800,838/month) is more accessible — confirm which specialisms qualify on the current OIF factsheet.

How World Study Helps

We advise students on post-graduation planning as part of the overall destination assessment — not just on admission and the initial visa. If long-term settlement matters to you, the choice of destination and even degree level can affect your PR timeline by years. Frequently asked questions

You can apply for a residence permit for the purpose of seeking a job or starting a business. This permit lasts a maximum of 9 months and cannot be extended. You must apply inside Hungary via the Enter Hungary platform at least 15 days before your study permit expires. After the 9 months, you must have found a job and converted to a work permit, or leave.

No. Hungary explicitly excludes time spent on a study permit — and on the job-seeking permit — from the 3-year national permanent residence clock. Your PR countdown starts only once you convert to a qualifying permit such as an employment permit, Hungarian Card, or EU Blue Card. This is a critical distinction that many advisers do not flag clearly.

The EU Blue Card requires a gross monthly salary of at least HUF 1,001,048 for most occupations (as of June 2026). For listed shortage occupations — including certain healthcare roles — the threshold is lower at HUF 800,838 gross/month. These figures are confirmed on the official OIF factsheet and are volatile (minimum-wage-linked); re-verify before applying.

Yes. The post-study permit covers both job-seeking and starting a business (if the business is related to your completed studies). The same 9-month non-extendable limit applies. Converting to a self-employment or guest self-employment permit is the onward route from there.
