What Does It Actually Cost to Study Medicine in Hungary in English?
There are three main public universities running English-medium MD programmes, and they price differently (as of June 2026 — verify before you pay):

One important flag on Semmelweis: the fee is quoted and billed in USD per semester, not per year. The ~USD 20,900/yr figure above is simply USD 10,450 × 2. This matters because agencies and aggregators sometimes list “USD 10,450” and call it the annual rate — it is not. At the June 2026 mid-market rate (€1 ≈ USD 1.14), Debrecen’s USD 16,900 converts to roughly EUR 14,825 and Semmelweis’s USD 20,900 converts to roughly EUR 18,335. All figures are volatile; re-check with the university before paying a deposit.
One-off entry costs at Debrecen (as an example) are: application fee USD 150 and entrance/registration fee USD 350.
Living Costs on Top of Tuition
The official Study in Hungary benchmark is roughly EUR 600–700 per month (EUR 7,000–8,400 per year), covering rent, food, transport and personal costs. Budapest runs slightly higher than Debrecen, Szeged or Pécs because of rent. In smaller cities a dormitory place costs approximately HUF 13,000–36,000 per month (around EUR 37–102), which brings the monthly total well below EUR 600 if you secure a dorm.
Health insurance is mandatory. The cheapest route is a commercial student policy at roughly EUR 300 per year (as of June 2026); the voluntary national-insurance route now costs far more because it is pegged at 30% of Hungary’s minimum wage.

Which Universities Offer English-Medium Medicine?
Hungary’s three flagship English-medium MD universities are Debrecen, Szeged and Semmelweis. A fourth option, the University of Pécs, has historically offered English-medium medicine; check their current prospectus to confirm availability and fees.
Semmelweis is the most prestigious for medicine and sits in the QS Subject rankings (Medicine, Top 101–200) despite not appearing in the QS World University overall table. Debrecen (QS 563), Szeged (QS 597) and Pécs (QS 741–750) all appear in the overall world rankings.
All three programmes are six-year, one-tier MD degrees (the Hungarian “Orvostudományi Kar” structure), leading to a degree recognised across the EU. You cannot shorten it to five years; Hungary does not split the programme into a pre-clinical bachelor’s and a clinical master’s.
What Are the Entry Requirements to Study Medicine in Hungary?
Academic
You need a recognised secondary school-leaving certificate — WASSCE, KCSE, NSSCO, NSC, ZIMSEC A-Level or equivalent — with strong grades in Biology and Chemistry. Each university sets its own grade thresholds; contact admissions directly for the exact minimum.
Certified English or Hungarian translations of your certificate and transcripts are required. There is no German-style APS certificate involved; Hungary uses ENIC-NARIC for foreign credential recognition.
Entrance Examination
This is the real filter. Every major English-medium medical school runs a written entrance exam in Medical Biology, Medical Chemistry and English, followed by a personal interview. Semmelweis uses an online Moodle-based exam with sections in Medical Biology, Medical Chemistry and General/Biomedical English — applicants complete this before an interview conducted in English. Debrecen and Szeged run similar written tests.
There is no minimum IELTS or TOEFL score published by Semmelweis for its own medicine programme; English is assessed through the university’s exam. If your previous schooling was in English, submit a Medium of Instruction (MOI) certificate; the university may still conduct an English interview even with an MOI.
Timing
Hungary has no national clearing house for international students. Apply directly to each university (most use a DreamApply portal) or via the Stipendium Hungaricum portal. Self-funded applications for a September start typically open around February, with admissions issued by late July. Deadlines vary by university — check each institution’s own calendar.
How Does the Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship Work for Medicine?
The Stipendium Hungaricum (SH) is Hungary’s flagship government scholarship. If your origin country is Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, Uganda or Egypt, you are an eligible Sending Partner for the 2026/27 cycle (verified against the official country pages and the Call for Applications PDF, June 2026).
Zimbabwe and Zambia are NOT eligible. This contradicts claims on many agency blogs. Official confirmation: the SH country pages for Zimbabwe and Zambia return HTTP 404 and both countries are absent from the 2026/27 Call PDF.
The scholarship covers full tuition, a monthly stipend of HUF 43,700 (approximately EUR 123 at June 2026 rates — re-check at application time), free university dormitory or HUF 40,000 per month accommodation allowance, and medical insurance of up to HUF 65,000 per year.
The 2026/27 deadline was 15 January 2026 at 14:00 CET — note that future cycles typically run November–January. Apply via apply.stipendiumhungaricum.hu; you may choose up to two programmes. Not every university lists every programme in the SH Call; confirm medicine is available under your country’s allocation before submitting.
The SH is extremely competitive. Applications for the 2024/25 cycle exceeded 66,000 globally, with Nigeria, Ghana and Kenya among the top-five source countries. A self-funded backup plan is sensible.
Can You Work While Studying Medicine in Hungary?
Yes. Non-EU students on a study residence permit may work up to 30 hours per week during the study period without a separate work permit. During academic breaks you may work full-time for a maximum of 90 days per year.
The gross minimum wage in Hungary in 2026 is HUF 322,800 per month (approximately EUR 912). Student jobs typically pay around EUR 445–550 net per month at unskilled or entry-level rates. Medicine is an intense programme; many students find more than 10–15 hours a week difficult to sustain alongside studies.
What Happens After You Graduate?
After completing your MD you can apply for a residence permit for the purpose of seeking a job or starting a business — the post-study job-search permit. This lasts a maximum of 9 months and is not extendable. It must be applied for inside Hungary via the Enter Hungary platform at least 15 days before your study permit expires.
From that permit you can convert to a Hungarian Card, EU Blue Card or guest self-employment permit if you receive a qualifying offer. The EU Blue Card salary threshold for 2026 is HUF 1,001,048 gross per month (approximately EUR 2,835) for general roles; HUF 800,838 for listed healthcare occupations (approximately EUR 2,265). Medical graduates in shortage specialties may qualify at the lower threshold.
PR watch-out: Hungary explicitly excludes study-permit time from the three-year National Residence Card (PR) clock. Time on the 9-month job-search permit also does not count. The PR clock only starts once you hold a qualifying work or Blue Card permit.
Honest Catches to Know Before You Apply
The Semmelweis fee unit trap. The USD 10,450 per semester figure circulates online and is sometimes misread as the annual fee. It is not. Annual cost is approximately USD 20,900 — the highest of the three main universities.
Entrance competition. EU-accredited English medicine in Hungary is well-known globally. Competition is real; acceptance is not a formality. Preparing thoroughly for the Biology and Chemistry entrance exam is essential.
Currency exposure. Debrecen and Semmelweis bill in USD. If your income or savings are in EUR, NGN, GHS, KES or ZAR, the USD rate on your payment date will affect your actual cost. Budget some buffer.
SH scope and timing. The Stipendium Hungaricum closes around 15 January each year for the following September intake. Missing this deadline means self-funding for at least one full year. Zimbabwe and Zambia students are ineligible for SH; they must self-fund.
Post-study window is short. Nine months to find a licensed clinical role in a country where you may not yet speak Hungarian fluently is tight. Many international medical graduates pursue licensing and employment outside Hungary — factor this into your long-term plan.
