Who Needs a TB Test for a UK Student Visa?

Two conditions must both be true before a TB test is required:

1. Your country of residence is on the gov.uk approved list. The Home Office maintains a list of countries at gov.uk/tb-test-visa. If your country of residence (not just nationality) is on that list, you must be tested before applying for most UK visas, including the Student visa.

2. Your course lasts more than six months. Short courses (six months or fewer) do not trigger the TB test requirement.

Egypt’s absence from the list is notable and unusual. It is confirmed by gov.uk and corroborated by our destination research corridor research as of June 2026. However, country lists are updated periodically. Egyptian applicants should verify this remains the case on gov.uk/tb-test-visa before applying.

Why Does the UK Require a TB Test?

The UK uses the pre-entry TB test as a public health measure to prevent the importation of active pulmonary tuberculosis. The test has been a feature of the UK’s visa system for applicants from high-incidence countries for many years. It is not a judgement about individuals — it is a screening requirement tied to TB prevalence rates in the country of residence.

A negative result (no active TB) is what you need to proceed. The vast majority of applicants receive a negative result.

Where Do You Get the Test Done?

You must use a UKVI-approved clinic. The clinic must be on the official approved list for your country of residence. The complete, current list of approved clinics by country is at gov.uk/tb-test-visa.

The most common approved provider across African countries is the International Organization for Migration (IOM). IOM clinics operate in many major African cities and specifically run UK visa TB testing services. In each of the countries in our programme:

• Nigeria: IOM approved clinics in Lagos and Abuja.
• Ghana: IOM approved clinic in Accra.
• Kenya: IOM approved clinic in Nairobi.
• Uganda: IOM approved clinic in Kampala (IOM Naguru, per our corridor research).
• Zambia: IOM approved clinic in Lusaka.
• Zimbabwe: IOM approved clinic in Harare.
• South Africa: IOM approved clinics; check gov.uk for current city locations.

Always confirm the current clinic locations on gov.uk/tb-test-visa before booking — clinics move, operating hours change, and additional approved providers are occasionally added.

What Does the Test Involve?

The TB test for a UK visa is a chest X-ray interpreted by a clinician at the approved clinic. The clinic:

1. Takes a chest X-ray.
2. Reviews it for signs of active pulmonary TB.
3. Issues a certificate if the result is clear (no active TB detected).

The test is not a general medical examination. It does not screen for other conditions. It typically takes one appointment, though some clinics require you to return for results. Book well in advance — clinics can be busy in peak visa season (June–September).

How Much Does the TB Test Cost?

Based on our research (our UK destination research, verified June 2026): approximately £75–95 per test. This is the clinic fee, paid directly to the approved clinic. It is not included in the VFS visa application fee, nor in the UKVI visa fee (£558) or IHS (£776/yr). It is an additional out-of-pocket cost.

As of June 2026: £75–95 is approximately €87–110 (at £1 ≈ €1.16). Local currency equivalents vary; re-check the FX rate at time of booking.

The clinic sets its own fee and it can change. Confirm the cost directly when you book your appointment.

How to Fit the TB Test Into Your Application Timeline

The TB test certificate must be included when you submit your UK student visa application. The logical sequence:

1. Receive your CAS from the university.
2. Book your TB test at the approved clinic — do this early, as appointments can book up weeks ahead.
3. Attend the clinic and receive your certificate (often same-day; some clinics take a day or two).
4. Submit your visa application online through a UKVI account, including the certificate.
5. Attend your VFS Global appointment for biometrics.

The VFS appointment and the TB clinic appointment are completely separate. Do not confuse them. VFS Global replaced TLScontact as the operator of UK visa application centres as of November 2024.

What if you are very close to your course start date?

This is where students get into trouble. Getting a TB test, waiting for results, then submitting the visa application and waiting ~3 weeks for a UKVI decision takes time. If you are applying in the last 6–8 weeks before your course starts, you are running a real risk. Aim to book the TB test as soon as you receive your unconditional offer — even before the CAS arrives — so you have the certificate ready.

What If the Result Is Not Clear?

If the clinic identifies signs of active TB:

• They will refer you for treatment through local health services. The approved clinics have protocols for this.
• Active TB is treatable. Completing treatment and receiving a clear certificate from the same clinic is the pathway to reapplying.
• A TB finding is not an automatic visa refusal, but it does delay your application — sometimes significantly. Early testing gives you the most time to resolve this before your intended course start.

Do not delay the test hoping for a “better” result later. An undetected case that becomes active while you are in the UK would be far more disruptive.

The Wider Medical Picture for UK Study

The TB test is the only pre-entry medical requirement for the standard UK Student visa. Unlike Cyprus (which requires tests for HIV, Hepatitis B and C, syphilis, and TB) or some other European destinations, the UK’s pre-entry health requirement is limited to TB screening for applicants from listed countries.

Once in the UK, you have full access to the NHS from the start of your visa — funded by the Immigration Health Surcharge you pay upfront (£776 per year at the student rate as of June 2026).
