What Türkiye Scholarships Covers

The following benefits are confirmed on the official full-time scholarships page at turkiyeburslari.gov.tr/fulltimeprograms (as of June 2026):

The TL amounts above are confirmed on the official site, but their EUR or USD equivalent changes continuously due to Turkey’s sustained high inflation. Because accommodation and health insurance are covered as separate benefits, the monthly stipend is primarily personal spending money — not your primary cost-of-living support — which partially cushions the impact of lira depreciation.

Who Can Apply: Eligibility for African Students

All eligibility criteria below are confirmed from the official programme page (June 2026).

Eligible groups:
– Citizens of all countries, including all eight WSA-supported origins: Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, Uganda, Egypt, Zimbabwe and Zambia
– Applicants who will have graduated at the level they are applying from before August of the application year
– Researchers and academics (for the Research Scholarship category)

Not eligible:
– Turkish citizens or individuals who have lost Turkish citizenship
– Applicants already enrolled at a Turkish university at the same level they are applying for

Academic thresholds:

Age limits (as of June 2026):
– Bachelor’s: under 21
– Master’s: under 30
– PhD: under 35
– Research Scholarship: under 50

Health sciences at graduate level: The programme explicitly states that Türkiye Scholarships does not award Master’s or PhD scholarships in health sciences. Medicine, dentistry and pharmacy are available at undergraduate level only under the standard programme. Candidates interested in graduate health studies should look at EU-based programmes — the DAAD EPOS and Erasmus Mundus are open to all eight WSA origins and do include health-related fields at graduate level.

The Real Catches — Before You Apply

Turkey is not in the EU or Schengen Area

Turkey is an EU candidate country but not a member state and not part of the Schengen Area. This has several practical consequences.

First, a Turkish degree does not come with automatic EU-wide recognition. Most Turkish public university degrees can be assessed through ENIC-NARIC national bodies in individual EU countries, but this requires a separate equivalence procedure — it is not automatic. If you want a degree that is immediately portable across EU member states, an EU institution is the simpler route.

Second, studying in Turkey does not build any EU or UK immigration history. After graduation, working in Germany, Ireland, Malta, Cyprus, Hungary, Poland or the UK requires entirely separate visa applications, as if you had not studied abroad at all. In contrast, a student who has completed a degree in an EU country may be eligible for a post-study work permit in that country.

If your medium-term goal is a career or further study in Europe, a European scholarship — Stipendium Hungaricum (for six WSA origins) or DAAD or Erasmus Mundus (all eight origins) — puts you in a stronger position.

The One-Year Turkish Language Course

Unless your chosen programme is taught in English — a growing number at Master’s level are, particularly in engineering, business and social sciences at Istanbul and Ankara universities — you will spend your first year in Turkey studying the language. The course is free and structured, but it extends your total time commitment by a year and means your academic degree clock does not start until year two.

The Stipend’s Real Purchasing Power

The six-week application window (10 January to 20 February) leaves little time for a poorly prepared application to be strengthened. Candidates who start in October or November — with documents translated, a clear motivation letter drafted, and a shortlist of departments selected using the TBBS search tool — are better placed than those who start in January.

How the Application Works

Applications go directly through the Türkiye Scholarships Application System (TBBS) at tbbs.turkiyeburslari.gov.tr. There is no national nominating body or intermediary: unlike Commonwealth or Stipendium Hungaricum scholarships, you apply directly, without going through a government ministry in your home country.

The steps (as described on the official site):

1. Create an account in TBBS before the window opens
2. Search available departments and universities in the TBBS system — available departments vary by level and academic background
3. Submit your application (academic transcripts, motivation letter, passport, references depending on level)
4. If shortlisted, you may be called to an interview (online or at a Turkish embassy/consulate)
5. Placement decisions are communicated by the programme; you do not independently apply to Turkish universities

The programme places you at a university and department based on your preferences and academic profile. Successful applicants receive a scholarship letter confirming their placement.

Honest Odds

Türkiye Scholarships receives a very large volume of global applications each cycle. No official acceptance rate is published by YTB (the Presidency for Turks Abroad and Related Communities, which administers the programme). The programme is described as competitive on the official site. A Merit Scholarship variant — paying twice the standard stipend — requires TOEFL iBT 80 or IELTS 6.5 at undergraduate level and TOEFL iBT 90 or IELTS 7.0 at graduate level, alongside high GPA and academic qualification exam results.

What this means in practice: a strong academic record, a clearly focused motivation letter, and a realistic department shortlist all matter. If your grade average is close to the 70%/75% minimum threshold, strengthening other parts of the application (language certificates, references, research experience) is important. No agency or consultant can guarantee a Türkiye Scholarships award, and any that claim to should be treated with scepticism.
