Is Austria a good choice from Ghana?
The tuition is the attraction. A public university charges €726.72 per semester at bachelor’s and the same at master’s, plus a €26.20 per semester union fee — a fraction of a UK or Irish fee. Living costs of €1,250–1,500 per month are where the money actually goes, and you prove twelve months of them before you travel.
English-taught programmes cluster at master’s level; most bachelor’s teaching is in German at C1, a level that takes about a year to reach. The Ghanaian community is very small: 39 students, against 1,742 Africans in total. The catch is that low tuition is paired with a recognition rule and a funds rule that both take months to satisfy. Entry with the WASSCE
There is no national credential check — each university assesses your file. The OeAD ENIC-NARIC West Africa recommendation of March 2026 is the common reference: the WASSCE plus either one examination-active year at a recognised Ghanaian university or two supplementary examinations. The University of Graz accepts the WASSCE outright with a credit grade in each of the six required subjects, or a three-year HND.
The University of Innsbruck flags Ghanaian files for individual review, and the University of Vienna reviews case by case, often routing applicants through VWU supplementary examinations. Where examinations are prescribed, the route is the Vorstudienlehrgang at VWU Vienna or VGUH Graz, 10 months at €500–1,890 per semester, registered only after a conditional admission letter. English-taught entry commonly asks IELTS 6 at bachelor’s, 6.5 at master’s.
The student visa from Ghana
Your file goes to the Austrian Embassy in Accra, which took over consular responsibility for Ghana from Abuja in September 2024. You attend in person: applications cannot go through VFS, another Schengen mission, or the Accra honorary consulate. The fee is €218, paid in cash in local currency at the monthly official rate, and the wait is 13–26 weeks: a 90-day decision period that can be extended by another 90 days.
You prove €722.58–1,308.39 per month for twelve months. No tuberculosis test or medical is required; fingerprints are taken. Erasmus Mundus is open to Ghanaian nationals. OeAD access is restricted, so read each scheme's country list before you count on it. No award removes the permit's funds proof, and full-cost awards are rare, so most applicants fund the first year themselves.
Up to 20 hours a week, and the employer must obtain an AMS Beschäftigungsbewilligung for every paid job, including a minor one. No labour-market test applies at or below the cap, and there is no holiday exemption. Austria has no statutory minimum wage; typical full-time floors run €1,983–2,217 per month.
The ASVG subsistence thresholds behind the funds proof rise on 1 January 2027, so a 2027/28 file shows more than today's €722.58–1,308.39 per month. The over-24 rate is confirmed; the new under-24 rate was not published verbatim as of September 2026. The student union fee rises for 2027/28 as well.
