From Ghana you need a university offer and a CAS, then the Student visa: £558, the health surcharge of £776 per year, and biometrics at VFS Global Accra and Kumasi. You must also show £10,539–13,761 on 28-day bank statements or an official sponsor letter. Refusals run at ≈16.5% (2026), the highest of the African corridors we cover, and most of them turn on money.
Is the UK a good choice from Ghana?
Teaching is in English and so is Ghanaian schooling, so a separate language test is often unnecessary. The UK held 685,565 international students in 2024/25, and the nine African origins we advise supply 8.4 per cent of them. Fees are £9,000–30,000 per year for a taught master’s and £11,400–38,000 per year for a bachelor’s, with living costs of £1,171–1,529 per month on top; the cost of studying in the UK page breaks that down.
The catch is at undergraduate level: the WASSCE is not accepted on its own for year one at most universities, so a first degree usually starts with a foundation year at £16,995–26,000 per year. A four-year Ghanaian bachelor’s, by contrast, is normally accepted straight into a taught master’s; the Ghana country guide compares destinations.
Entry with the WASSCE
Most universities rank the WASSCE below A-level standard. The University of Manchester routes WASSCE holders through its own or the INTO Manchester foundation year; Durham University and the University of Leeds also require a foundation year; Oxford does not list the WASSCE among its accepted school-leaving qualifications. The University of Glasgow is the exception, mapping WAEC and WASSCE grades onto A-level bands for direct entry.
A credit in WASSCE English replaces IELTS at Leeds, Sheffield and Durham; otherwise the floor is 6 for bachelor’s and 6.5 for master’s. Undergraduate applications go through UCAS, with a deadline of 13 January 2027 (18:00 UK time), or 15 October 2026 for Oxford, Cambridge and most medicine, dentistry and veterinary courses.

You apply online on GOV.UK and attend VFS Global Accra and Kumasi for biometrics. The fee of £558 is charged in pounds with the online application, alongside the surcharge of £776 per year; VFS’s optional local services are billed separately, and our UK Student visa requirements page lists the rest. Decisions take about 3 weeks. The TB certificate comes from IOM Accra and Kumasi at US$50–85; GOV.UK advises testing well before travel, since a follow-up chest X-ray adds weeks.
Funds decide most cases: £10,539–13,761, worked out as £1,171 a month outside London or £1,529 in London, for up to nine months, plus first-year fees and evidenced by 28-day bank statements or an official sponsor letter — see our proof of funds rules. Ghana issues no apostille: WAEC or the Ministry of Education authenticates certificates and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Accra legalises them, though UK universities do not ask for it.

A foundation year adds £16,995–26,000 per year. Ghanaian nationals are eligible for Chevening and Commonwealth scholarships, both for master’s study and both closing well ahead of term; university awards are usually partial fee discounts granted after you hold an offer. The honest downsides
- ≈16.5% (2026) of Ghanaian student applications are refused, the highest of the corridors we cover; the usual causes are the genuine-student credibility test and funds not held for the full 28-day period.
- The foundation year adds 9 months and £16,995–26,000 per year before the degree starts.
- From 1 January 2027 the Graduate Route falls to 18 months for bachelor’s and master’s graduates; only applications made on or before 31 December 2026 keep two years.
- Document fraud or failed verification triggers a mandatory refusal under the Suitability rules; agents selling guaranteed visas are a documented pattern in Ghana.
- Taught master’s students cannot bring dependants: since 2024 only government-sponsored students and research postgraduates qualify.
