Is Italy a good choice from Zambia?
Italy is one of the cheaper EU destinations open to a Zambian applicant. Public universities charge €200–4,200 per year: non-EU students without an Italian income assessment are banded by country income, and every origin we cover falls in a reduced or middle band, never the top. Most degrees are taught in Italian at B2, now a ministerial condition checked at pre-enrolment; English-taught degrees are a minority. Your ECZ School Certificate (Grade 12) sits at 12 years of schooling, exactly Italy’s minimum, so no foundation year is required.
The catch is scale: only 37 Zambian students were counted in Italy in the latest Eurostat year, so expect little Zambia-specific help.
Entry with the ECZ Grade 12
Italy’s rule is a secondary certificate earned after at least 12 years of schooling, and the ECZ Grade 12 meets it. Sapienza University of Rome accepts the Zambian School Certificate with five or more credits directly. The University of Pisa and the University of Padua also recognise it directly, with restricted-access degrees entered through the TOLC or IMAT test. Politecnico di Torino accepts it too, but Zambia is not on its English-medium exemption list, so a separate English certificate is still required — see universities in Italy.
Recognition runs through a CIMEA attestazione di comparabilità, or a Dichiarazione di Valore from the Italian embassy. A 10-month Corso propedeutico exists at €4,000–5,000 per year, but Zambian applicants do not normally need it.
English-taught programmes commonly ask for IELTS 6; Italian-taught ones need Italian at B2.
The student visa from Zambia
Files go straight to the visa office of the Embassy of Italy in Lusaka, so there is no VFS stage. The student rate for the national Type D visa is €50. The embassy’s own figure is at least 15 days from a complete application; the national planning range is 6 to 13 weeks. Biometrics are taken; no TB test or medical is required.
Pre-enrol on Universitaly first.
