Study in Malta from Zambia: entry, visa and costs
Malta teaches in English, but the ECZ Grade 12 does not give direct degree entry: the University of Malta puts Zambian applicants through a foundation year first. Non-EU bachelor's tuition is €8,500–10,800 per year and you must show €746–950 per month. There is no Maltese visa centre in Zambia, so the file goes through South Africa.
Is Malta a good choice from Zambia?
The advantage is language. English and Maltese are the official languages and degrees are taught in English, so there is no second language to learn first. The system is small: 8 recognised institutions and 8,252 international students in 2023/24, 502 of them African, or 6.3 per cent of the intake.

The catch is an extra year: the ECZ School Certificate (Grade 12) does not admit you straight to a Maltese bachelor’s, so budget a foundation year first.
Entry with the ECZ Grade 12
The University of Malta treats the Zambian School Certificate and GCE as not comparable to the Maltese Matriculation Certificate. Holders take the Certificate in Foundation Studies first: 12 months at €6,600–16,000 per programme. Its outcome is an MQF Level 4 certificate worth 62 ECTS, which makes you eligible for a University of Malta bachelor’s in the matching subject area; the Medical and Dental Sciences stream guarantees a place in Medicine and Surgery.
Queen Mary University of London’s Malta campus does not accept the ECZ Grade 12 at all, asking instead for A-levels, an International Baccalaureate or an approved foundation programme. MCAST assesses ECZ results individually, through an MQRIC comparability statement against the target level. There is no English exemption for Zambian applicants: UM requires a Secure English Language Test, with floors of IELTS 6 for a bachelor’s and 6.5 for a master’s.
The student visa from Zambia
Malta has no consulate and no VFS Malta channel in Zambia; the country is absent from Malta’s own long-stay selector. The documented route is VFS Global’s Malta Extended Services centre for South Africa, which quotes €250–400 — visa fee plus VFS service charge — against Malta’s standard €100–150. Biometrics are taken in person, so budget the trip. Processing runs 3 to 9 weeks.
Funds are checked twice, at €746–950 per month, and the residence permit adds €50; how proof of funds works covers both stages. Zambia is not a Hague Apostille country, so certificates are legalised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Lusaka before they support an application. No pre-departure medical applies: the TB check is a chest X-ray within four weeks of arrival.

Count tuition of €8,500–10,800 per year, or €6,600–16,000 per programme if you start on the foundation year. Add living at €950–1,600 per month, health cover at €150–400 per year with a minimum sum insured of €30,000, the visa at €250–400 and the permit at €50.

What works in your favour
- Teaching and daily life run in English, which is also official at home.
- Master’s admission is by classification, not the length of the first degree, so a Zambian bachelor’s avoids the foundation-year problem.
- Term-time work is up to 20 hours a week from the first year of a full-time recognised degree, against a minimum wage of €994.24 per month.
- Graduates get the Graduate seeking-employment/business permit for 9 months, at €27.50.
- The main intake is October, with February for some programmes, so a missed October date need not cost a full year.
The honest downsides

- There is no channel at home: files go through VFS South Africa, adding cross-border travel for biometrics to the €250–400 cost.

- The corridor is thin: 502 African students in the whole system, against 5,318 Zambians studying abroad, so expect little Zambia-specific support.
- Deadlines come one cycle at a time: the University of Malta’s cut-off for October 2026 was 1 July, and the 2027/28 date is not yet published.
