Bachelor's Degree in Türkiye for African Students

A Turkish Lisans diploması runs 4 years and carries 240 ECTS, and foreign nationals pay US$1,600–2,400 per year at a public university. The main intake starts in September and every university admits directly, with no national portal. The catch is that your school certificate alone is not an entry qualification at the flagships: you sit TR-YÖS or SAT.

What a bachelor’s degree in Türkiye looks like

The Turkish first degree is the Lisans diploması. The standard programme runs 4 years and carries 240 ECTS. Dentistry, veterinary medicine and pharmacy run five years and medicine six, which is why the published span reaches 6 years; YÖK, the higher education council, treats those four qualifications as equivalent to a master’s.

Teaching starts in September. A few universities also open a February start, but the autumn cycle is the one to plan around. Credits are counted in ECTS, so a lisans converts the way any European bachelor’s does and is the normal entry ticket to a master’s. Türkiye recognises 208 higher education institutions and hosted 336,366 international students in 2023/24.

Language of teaching is the decision that shapes everything else. The national language is Turkish and most public programmes are Turkish-medium. English-taught provision is real but concentrated: Bilkent teaches all programmes in English, Boğaziçi lists 34 English-taught bachelor’s and Koç 22, while Istanbul University lists 1.

Can you enter with WASSCE, KCSE, NSC or the Bac?

Entry is exam-based, not certificate-based. YÖK’s Esaslar fix only who may apply and leave the accepted qualifications and minimum scores to each university’s senate. WASSCE, KCSE, NSC, ZIMSEC A-Level, ECZ Grade 12, UACE, Thanaweya Amma and the Moroccan Baccalauréat are not named as stand-alone entry qualifications at the flagship public universities, so holders sit TR-YÖS, that university’s own YÖS, or SAT/ACT. A TR-YÖS or SAT score is valid two years, so an October sitting in 2026 still covers the 2027/28 intake.

Several universities do read the certificate directly: Bilkent asks for grade B3 in six WASSCE subjects, three related to the programme; Ankara University for B2 in six; Sabancı for C4 in three; METU caps the aggregate at fifteen across five subjects. Hacettepe, ITU, Istanbul University, Koç and Boğaziçi do not name WASSCE: they want an entrance exam, SAT, ACT, A-Level or IB.

ÖSYM runs TR-YÖS twice a year, in Turkish, German, English, French, Russian and Arabic, at centres including Abuja, Accra, Nairobi, Cairo, Cape Town, Kampala and Lusaka. There is none in Zimbabwe or Morocco, so ZIMSEC and Moroccan Bac holders travel or use SAT.

Türkiye runs no state pre-university year and no bridging examination. Two pre-degree routes exist instead: a Turkish-language year of 10 months at a TÖMER centre costing TRY 45,000–81,600 per programme, and the compulsory foreign-language preparatory class of 9 months, free and inside your degree. At registration the certificate needs a lise denklik belgesi from the Ministry of National Education, applied for at a Turkish education attaché or consulate. Apostille is yes for Hague Convention countries; others need consular legalisation. See Türkiye foundation and language routes and studying in Türkiye from Nigeria.

How much a bachelor’s costs in Türkiye

Public universities charge foreign nationals a separate fee, set per university, not nationally: US$1,600–2,400 per year. Istanbul University runs from US$500–6,500 per year across faculties, Ankara University US$1,800–10,150 per year, Hacettepe US$3,000–12,000 per year, METU TRY 17,849–28,379 per semester. Foundation (vakıf) universities are a separate market at US$16,300–22,000 per year, and above it: Bilkent US$18,400 per year, Sabancı US$36,500 per year.

There is no national semester registration fee — the headline figure is the whole annual charge. Application fees are small or nil: METU US$55, Istanbul University US$20, Ankara University free.

Tuition is quoted in US dollars but paid in lira at the rate on the payment date, so the bill moves with the exchange rate. Living costs run TRY 12,000–35,000 per month nationally, TRY 12,000–40,000 per month in Ankara against TRY 28,000–56,000 per month in Istanbul. Add health cover of TRY 4,800–5,800 per year on a private policy. Full city detail is on our Türkiye cost of study page.

English requirements for a bachelor’s

No single national English floor exists. The representative figure is IELTS 6.5, which is Bilkent’s own threshold — 6.5 overall with 5.5 minimum per section — and the same band applies at Boğaziçi (6.5) and Istanbul Medipol (6.5). TOEFL iBT is accepted everywhere and the bars differ sharply: ITU 91, Bilkent 87, Koç 80, Boğaziçi 79, METU 75, Hacettepe 60.

You can be admitted with no certificate at all. METU requires no proficiency score for undergraduate admission and tests you after enrolment instead; fail that test and you spend a year in the preparatory class before the degree starts. The visa sets no language condition either: the rules leave it to universities. Routes without IELTS are set out on our study in Türkiye without IELTS page.

Universities to look at for a bachelor’s

Bilkent University, Ankara. Private, all programmes in English, US$18,400 per year fixed at your year of entry. The undergraduate window runs February to July.

Ankara University, Ankara. 26 English-taught bachelor’s at US$1,800–10,150 per year, with a named WASSCE threshold. Applications closed in late June for the most recent cycle.

Hacettepe University, Ankara. 15 English-taught bachelor’s at US$3,000–12,000 per year, the lowest TOEFL bar in the set. WASSCE is not accepted, so TR-YÖS or SAT is required.

Istanbul Aydın University, Istanbul. Private, many English-taught programmes at US$5,000–8,000 per year, with 24 per cent international students and a fall-only intake.

Istanbul Medipol University, Istanbul. Private, US$4,500–36,000 per year depending on faculty, 31.4 per cent international, and rolling admission decided in about a week. WASSCE is not named on any admissions page, so applicants go through the standard document review. The full set is on our Türkiye universities page.

How to apply for a bachelor’s in Türkiye

  1. Pick the language track first. Decide between an English-taught and a Turkish-medium programme, then shortlist by faculty: fees vary by faculty inside the same university.
  2. Book your entrance exam. Apply for TR-YÖS at tryos.osym.gov.tr, or register for SAT/ACT. Applications for the autumn sitting run July to early August, the spring sitting opens in January, and scores are valid two years.
  3. Get the lise denklik. Apply through a Turkish education attaché or consulate for the Ministry of National Education equivalence certificate, and apostille or legalise transcripts in parallel.
  4. Apply to each university separately. There is no national portal: https://www.studyinturkiye.gov.tr is a government information site, not an application system. Mainstream public windows for the September start run June to July, and METU closed its most recent international cycle in July.
  5. Consider the funded route. Türkiye Bursları runs 10 January to 20 February and assigns your university and department; it is a parallel application, not a top-up. See Türkiye scholarships.
  6. Accept, register and pay. Offers are followed by online preference submission, placement and on-campus registration, July to September.
  7. Get the D-2 visa before you fly. Apply at the Turkish consulate at home with the admission letter, a guarantor’s letter and the guarantor’s recent bank statements.
  8. Convert to a residence permit after arrival. Pre-apply at e-ikamet.goc.gov.tr, attend the appointment and pay the document fee of TRY 964 plus the duration-based duty. See our Türkiye student visa page.

After the bachelor’s: master’s or work?

A graduate can apply for the kısa dönem ikamet izni, the post-graduation short-term residence permit under Law No. 6458, within six months of graduating. It grants 12 months. It carries no work rights on its own — a separate work permit from the Ministry of Labour is always required. A YÖK circular dated 2026-08-02 told universities the permit can be extended by a further year, up to two years; the underlying regulation is not published, so treat it as in rollout.

During the degree, bachelor’s students may only apply for a work permit after the first year. The smoother next step is usually a master’s: public graduate tuition is US$750–2,000 per year, below the bachelor’s rate. See master’s degrees in Türkiye.

How to apply Direct to each university; there is no national undergraduate portal for international applicants. Most public universities require a central entrance-exam score: TR-YÖS, run by ÖSYM twice a year and applied for at tryos.osym.gov.tr, or the university's own YÖS, or SAT/ACT. Quotas are proposed by each university and approved annually by YÖK. Türkiye Bursları (turkiyeburslari.gov.tr) is a parallel scholarship-plus-placement route that assigns the university and department.
Typical deadline No national deadline; each university publishes its own calendar. Mainstream public-university window for the September start is June-August (Istanbul University 2026 cycle: online preference submission 13-20 July, placement 17 August, registration 7-11 September). TR-YÖS 2026 sittings: applications 14 January-early February (spring exam) and 9 July-3 August for the 11 October 2026 exam; a TR-YÖS result is valid for 2 years from the exam date, so an October 2026 sitting covers the 2027/28 intake. Türkiye Bursları applications run 10 January-20 February every year.
Entry with an African school certificate Exam-based, not certificate-based. YÖK's Esaslar fix only who may apply (foreign nationals who did not do their secondary schooling in Türkiye or the TRNC) and leave the accepted qualifications and minimum scores to each university's senate-approved directive, which YÖK then approves. WASSCE (Nigeria, Ghana), KCSE (Kenya), NSC (South Africa), ZIMSEC A-Level (Zimbabwe), ECZ Grade 12 (Zambia), UACE (Uganda), Thanaweya Amma (Egypt) and the Moroccan Baccalauréat are not named as stand-alone entry qualifications at flagship public universities, so holders sit TR-YÖS (or that university's own YÖS) or SAT/ACT. School-leaving examinations such as Abitur, IB, GCE and Tawjihi carry no validity limit under the Esaslar; SAT and TR-YÖS scores are valid two years. At registration the secondary certificate must carry a lise denklik belgesi from the Ministry of National Education (MEB), applied for at a Turkish education attaché/consulate abroad or a denklik merkezi in Türkiye - MEB, not YÖK, is the recognition body for school certificates. TR-YÖS is delivered in Turkish, German, English, French, Russian and Arabic and is sat in Abuja, Accra, Nairobi, Cairo, Cape Town, Kampala, Lusaka, Addis Ababa, Khartoum, Dakar, Dar es Salaam, Algiers and Tunis among 30+ African centres; the 2026-TR-YÖS/2 fee for candidates from 32 African countries is 1,150 TRY. There is no TR-YÖS centre in Zimbabwe or Morocco, so ZIMSEC and Moroccan Bac holders must travel or use SAT.
Public tuition (non-EU) US$1,600–2,400 per year — METU (ODTU), foreign-national fee, 2023-24-entry cohort onward: USD800-1200/semester depending on faculty (Humanities/Econ&Admin/Education at the low end, Architecture&Engineering/Sciences at the high end) = USD1,600-2,400/yr. Dentistry, veterinary medicine and pharmacy run 5 years and medicine 6 years; Teaching, law, medicine, dentistry and pharmacy programmes may admit international students only up to 10% of the programme quota (YÖK Yurtdışından Öğrenci Kabulüne İlişkin Esaslar, A- Genel İlkeler).

What works in your favour

  • Public tuition is US$1,600–2,400 per year with no separate national semester fee, and application fees are free at several universities or as little as US$20.
  • TR-YÖS is sat in Africa — Abuja, Accra, Nairobi, Cairo, Cape Town, Kampala, Lusaka — in English, French or Arabic, and the score is valid two years, so one sitting covers two admission cycles.
  • English-taught bachelor’s degrees exist at scale: all at Bilkent, 34 at Boğaziçi, 26 at Ankara University.
  • Türkiye already hosts 336,366 international students across 208 recognised institutions, so international admissions offices are routine rather than experimental.
  • Graduating buys 12 months of legal stay, and Türkiye Bursları covers tuition, accommodation, insurance, a flight and a Turkish-language year for successful candidates.

The honest downsides

  • Your certificate is not enough on its own at the flagships, so add an entrance exam to the cost and the calendar — and there is no TR-YÖS centre in Zimbabwe or Morocco.
  • Turkish-medium is the default. Escaping it usually means a foundation university at US$16,300–22,000 per year, and up to US$36,500 per year at Sabancı.
  • Fees are set in dollars and paid in lira, so the real cost moves between offer and payment, and Istanbul living costs run TRY 28,000–56,000 per month.
  • There is no fixed proof-of-funds sum: a Bank statement (own or sponsor/guarantor) or scholarship confirmation letter is assessed case by case, and weak funds evidence is the leading refusal ground.
  • Work is restricted: no permit in year one, a separate permit always required after that, and the residence permit itself can take 13 weeks.

Our core guidance is free, funded by university commission when you enrol. We check which universities read your certificate directly and which will make you sit TR-YÖS, build the calendar backwards from the exam sitting and the June–July application window, and start the lise denklik and legalisation early because those steps run slowest. We vet every document before submission: transcripts, guarantor evidence, insurance and the admission file. Premium Placement is optional and paid. We never sell guaranteed admission or a guaranteed visa.

How to apply for a bachelor's degree in Türkiye from Africa

  1. Choose the language track and shortlist

Decide between an English-taught and a Turkish-medium programme, then shortlist by faculty. Fees differ by faculty inside the same university, so compare programmes rather than institutions.

  2. Book TR-YOS or SAT

Register for TR-YOS with OSYM, or sit SAT or ACT. Applications for the autumn sitting run July to early August, the spring sitting opens in January. Scores are valid two years.

  3. Apply for the lise denklik certificate

Ask a Turkish education attache or consulate for the Ministry of National Education secondary-school equivalence certificate, and apostille or legalise transcripts at the same time.

  4. Apply to each university separately

There is no national portal. Mainstream public windows for the September start fall in June and July; foundation universities often open earlier and some admit on a rolling basis.

  5. Apply to Turkiye Burslari if funded

The government scholarship runs 10 January to 20 February and assigns the university and department. It covers tuition, accommodation, insurance, a flight and a Turkish-language year.

  6. Accept the offer and register

Submit online preferences, wait for placement, then register on campus. Public universities typically place in August and register in early September for the autumn start.

  7. Get the D-2 education visa

Apply at the Turkish consulate at home before travelling, with the admission letter, a financial guarantor's letter and the guarantor's recent bank or salary statements.

  8. Convert to a student residence permit

Pre-apply online at e-ikamet after arrival, attend the migration office appointment, buy compliant health insurance and pay the document fee plus the duration-based duty.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, but usually not on the certificate alone. Flagship public universities do not name these as stand-alone entry qualifications, so you sit TR-YÖS, the university's own YÖS, or SAT/ACT. Bilkent, Ankara University, METU, Sabancı and Yeditepe do publish WASSCE grade thresholds. Every route needs a lise denklik belgesi from the Ministry of National Education at registration.

4 years and 240 ECTS for the standard lisans. Dentistry, veterinary medicine and pharmacy run five years and medicine six, which is why the official span goes to 6 years. YÖK treats those four qualifications as equivalent to a master's, so graduates can move straight to doctoral study.

US$1,600–2,400 per year is the public band for foreign nationals, and US$16,300–22,000 per year the foundation-university band. There is no separate national semester fee. Budget living costs of TRY 12,000–35,000 per month nationally, more in Istanbul, plus health cover at TRY 4,800–5,800 per year.

Not always. There is no national floor; each university decides. IELTS 6.5 is the representative band at Bilkent, Boğaziçi and Istanbul Medipol, while TOEFL iBT bars range from 60 at Hacettepe to 91 at ITU. METU asks for no score at admission and tests you after enrolment.

Yes, though they are concentrated. Bilkent teaches all programmes in English, Boğaziçi lists 34, Ankara University 26, Koç 22 and Hacettepe 15. Istanbul University lists 1. Check programme by programme rather than by university reputation, because a Turkish-medium place at the same institution will send you to the language year first.

There is no national deadline. No national deadline — set per university. Representative official example: METU (ODTÜ) undergraduate international-student applications for AY2026/27 ran 2026-06-01 to 2026-07-12; expect an analogous June-July window for the 2027/28 cycle. Türkiye Bursları is the fixed date in the calendar, running 10 January to 20 February.

No, and this is the most common misunderstanding. https://www.studyinturkiye.gov.tr is a government information site, not an application system. You apply to each university separately, on its own calendar, with its own fee and its own accepted exams. TR-YÖS is centralised through ÖSYM, but admission itself never is.

One announced change matters most. A YÖK circular dated 2026-08-02, following a migration-authority legal opinion, allows the post-graduation short-term residence permit to be extended by a further year, taking it from 12 months to two years. Apply within six months of graduating as before. It still confers no automatic work rights.
