PhD in Türkiye for African Students (2027)

A doctorate in Türkiye takes 4 to 6 years, can be supervised and defended in English at most universities, and costs US$750–2,000 per year at a public university. Türkiye Bursları pays its doctoral holders TRY 9,000 per month and covers the fees. Outside that one scheme there is no salaried doctoral post, so you fund yourself.

How a PhD works in Türkiye

Türkiye runs structured doctoral programmes. You apply to the graduate institute of a university, not privately to a professor. Admission puts you in a department, where you take doctoral coursework, pass a qualifying examination, then work under a thesis committee until the defence. The award is the Doktora and the degree is credited at 240 ECTS.

The clock is set by regulation, not by your supervisor. With a thesis master’s behind you the programme runs 4 years and may not exceed 6. Admitted straight from a bachelor’s it is five years with a seven-year ceiling and 300 ECTS instead. Coursework must be finished inside four semesters, six if you entered from a bachelor’s. Entry is in September, February.

English alone is enough at most universities — on whether the doctorate can be supervised, written and defended in English, the answer is yes. Bilkent teaches all of its programmes in English, Boğaziçi lists 35 English-taught doctorates and Koç 30. At Istanbul University English provision is limited, so check the language of supervision, not only of the courses.

How PhDs are funded — and what you are paid

The mechanism first: Self-funded is the default. The only named national mechanism open to African applicants is the Türkiye Bursları PhD scholarship, which covers tuition, accommodation, health insurance, one return flight, a one-year Turkish course and a monthly stipend. TÜBİTAK's 2215 Graduate Scholarship Programme for International Students and 2235 Graduate Scholarship Programme for Least Developed Countries were repealed by the TÜBİTAK Science Committee and are closed to applications. There is no national doctoral employment contract or salaried doctoral position for international students (checked tubitak.gov.tr, turkiyeburslari.gov.tr, yok.gov.tr).

Plan on paying your own way unless you win Türkiye Bursları. The scheme is open to citizens of all nine of our origin countries. It awards about 5,000 places a year across every level, sets an age ceiling of 35 for doctoral candidates and an academic floor of 70%, and opened on 10 January 2026 and closed on 20 February 2026 in the last published cycle. The doctoral stipend is TRY 9,000 per month, below living costs of TRY 12,000–35,000 per month — but a dormitory place, health insurance and flights come with it, which is what closes the gap. One condition matters before you apply: Yes — the Regulation sets the principle that the holder returns to their own country within one year of completing studies in Türkiye, with an exception for those granted a work permit in a field meeting Türkiye's workforce needs.

Self-funding is cheaper here than in most destinations. A public doctorate costs US$750–2,000 per year, so the fee is rarely the obstacle — rent and the lira are. Our Türkiye scholarships page sets out what else the universities award.

Entry requirements for a PhD

Admission is academic and centrally framed: Direct to the graduate institute of each university. Entry with a thesis master's requires ALES 55 (GRE/GMAT accepted from international applicants) plus at least 55 in a central foreign-language examination; entry straight from a bachelor's requires ALES 80 and a bachelor's GPA of at least 3.00 on 4.00. Türkiye Bursları runs the funded parallel route, 10 January-20 February.

ALES is sat in Turkish, so as an international applicant you will normally submit GRE or GMAT in its place. An African master’s is judged on the awarding institution rather than the passport: YOK (Yuksekogretim Kurulu) via Diploma Denklik (denklik.yok.gov.tr) recognises foreign HIGHER-EDUCATION diplomas. Secondary-school leaving certificates used for fresh undergraduate admission (e.g. WASSCE, KCSE, NSC) are typically assessed directly by each university's own international office rather than requiring prior YOK denklik. On legalisation the answer is yes where your country is in the Hague Apostille Convention, consular legalisation where it is not, and there is no German-style pre-check: no. English is set university by university, with 6.5 the representative graduate floor. Our Türkiye master’s guide explains how African degrees are assessed.

How to apply for a PhD in Türkiye

  1. Autumn 2026 — decide between the funded and self-funded routes; they run on different calendars. Türkiye Bursları assigns your university and department; applying directly leaves the choice with you.
  2. Write the research proposal, then email two or three academics in the closest departments, attaching it with your master’s transcript and a page on why their group.
  3. Sit the tests early: GRE or GMAT in place of ALES, plus the English test your university names, so scores are in hand before applications open.
  4. Check the window institute by institute: Institute by institute, mirroring the master's: July-August for the September intake, December-January for the February intake. Not published: no national doctoral application deadline (checked mevzuat.gov.tr Lisansüstü Eğitim ve Öğretim Yönetmeliği, egitim.yok.gov.tr, sbe.metu.edu.tr).
  5. Apply to Türkiye Bursları separately for funding — the last published cycle ran 10 January 2026 to 20 February 2026, with an interview: yes.
  6. Legalise the paperwork meanwhile: apostille or consular legalisation of certificates and transcripts, plus YOK diploma recognition where the institute asks for it.
  7. Accept the offer, then apply for the education-purpose visa at the Turkish consulate before you travel; processing runs up to 13 weeks. Our Türkiye student visa guide lists every document.
  8. Budget for arrival: TRY 12,000–40,000 per month in Ankara against TRY 28,000–56,000 per month in Istanbul. Our cost of studying in Türkiye page breaks it down.

Visa, family and life as a doctoral candidate

The route is the ordinary student permit: Same student residence permit (öğrenci ikamet izni) as the other levels – the Göç İdaresi Başkanlığı lists ön lisans, lisans, yüksek lisans, doktora, TUS and DUS together under Law 6458 arts. 38-41. There is no separate researcher permit for doctoral candidates; the short-term permit for scientific research applies to visiting researchers, not to enrolled PhD students. You enter on an education-purpose visa issued at home, then complete the permit at the provincial migration directorate. The document fee is TRY 964, plus a duration-based duty, and insurance costs TRY 4,800–5,800 per year privately or TRY 1,981.80 per month on state cover.

Unlike undergraduates, doctoral candidates wait no year before applying for a work permit, but residence never itself confers the right to work: yes. No weekly hour ceiling is published for graduate students. After the defence you may stay 12 months on the Kisa donem ikamet izni (post-graduation short-term residence permit) for graduates of a Turkish higher-education institution, under Law No.6458, applying within six months of graduation; the all-in cost is about TRY 27,751.60.

What works in your favour

  • The public doctoral fee is US$750–2,000 per year, and at Sabancı it is free with a stipend attached — among the cheapest research doctorates open to African candidates anywhere.
  • The doctorate can be supervised and defended in English at most universities: yes, with 35 English-taught doctorates at Boğaziçi alone.
  • All nine of our origin countries are eligible for Türkiye Bursları, which pays TRY 9,000 per month and covers tuition, a dormitory place, insurance and flights.
  • ALES is sat in Turkish, but GRE and GMAT are accepted from international applicants, so the entrance exam is one you can take at home.
  • Two entry points a year, September, February, and 12 months of stay after the defence.

The honest downsides

  • Nobody employs you to do the doctorate. There is no national doctoral contract, so outside Türkiye Bursları the default is self-funding across 4 to 6 years.
  • Two named funding routes closed: TÜBİTAK’s 2215 and 2235 graduate scholarships for international and least-developed-country candidates were repealed and no longer accept applications.
  • Istanbul is expensive and the lira moves. Living costs there run TRY 28,000–56,000 per month, and fees are quoted in US dollars precisely because of that volatility.
  • Private universities charge research-university money without it: Bahçeşehir’s doctorate is US$40,000 per programme and Medipol’s up to US$10,500–25,000 per year.
  • The African cohort is thin. None of our nine countries appears in the published top-ten nationalities among 336,366 international students in 2023/24, so there are few alumni to ask.

Our core guidance is free, funded by university commission when you enrol. For a doctorate that means the parts applicants get wrong: judging whether your master's will clear YÖK recognition, turning a research idea into a fundable proposal, finding departments where a supervisor is taking candidates, and lining Türkiye Bursları up against institute deadlines. We vet every document — transcripts, apostille, test scores, funding proof — before submission. Premium Placement is an optional paid service for full file preparation.

How to apply for a PhD in Türkiye from Africa

  1. Choose the funded or the self-funded route

Turkiye Burslari assigns your university and department and runs on a fixed January to February window. Applying directly to graduate institutes leaves the choice of department with you.

  2. Write the proposal and contact academics

Draft the research proposal, then email two or three academics whose published work is closest to it, attaching the proposal, your master's transcript and a page on why their group.

  3. Sit the entrance and language tests

Book GRE or GMAT in place of ALES, which is sat in Turkish, and take the English test your target university names, so both scores are in hand before applications open.

  4. Check each institute's deadline

There is no national doctoral deadline. Institutes run July to August for the September intake and December to January for the February intake, so confirm dates department by department.

  5. Apply for funding separately

File a Turkiye Burslari application in its own window if you want tuition, a dormitory place, insurance, flights and a monthly stipend. An interview forms part of the selection.

  6. Legalise and recognise your documents

Obtain an apostille or consular legalisation for your degree certificate and transcripts, and apply for YOK diploma recognition where the graduate institute asks for an equivalence.

  7. Accept the offer and apply for the visa

Accept your place, then apply for the education-purpose visa at the Turkish consulate at home before travelling. Allow up to thirteen weeks across consular and permit processing.

  8. File the residence permit after arrival

Pre-apply online for the student residence permit, attend the appointment at the provincial migration directorate, pay the document fee and duty, and hold compliant health insurance throughout.

Frequently asked questions

At a public university the doctorate costs US$750–2,000 per year, with Boğaziçi at US$300 per semester and Sabancı charging free in academic programmes. Private and foundation universities are far higher, up to US$40,000 per programme. Living costs, not tuition, are the real budget line.

There is no national doctoral employment contract and no salaried doctoral post for international students. The one national route is Türkiye Bursları, which pays TRY 9,000 per month and covers tuition, a state dormitory place, health insurance and flights. Sabancı and parts of Koç attach assistantship stipends to their own doctoral places. Otherwise, budget as self-funded.

4 years with a thesis master's behind you, and the regulation caps it at 6. Entering straight from a bachelor's makes it five years with a seven-year ceiling and 300 ECTS instead of 240. Coursework must be completed within the first four semesters, six if you entered from a bachelor's.

Yes at most universities — the answer in our dataset is yes. Bilkent runs all programmes in English, Boğaziçi lists 35 English-taught doctorates and Koç 30. Turkish-medium departments require a C1 Turkish certificate instead, so confirm the language of supervision and of the defence before you apply.

Yes, where the awarding institution is recognised. Higher-education diplomas are recognised by YOK through its Diploma Denklik service. Apostille applies if your country is in the Hague Convention, consular legalisation if not: yes. There is no German-style pre-check — on an APS the answer is no. Institutes weigh subject fit and your proposal heavily.

No, and this is the most common misunderstanding. The national rule sets ALES 55 with a thesis master's, or ALES 80 entering from a bachelor's, but ALES is sat in Turkish and institutes accept GRE or GMAT from international applicants in its place. You will also need at least 55 in a central foreign-language examination, or the university's accepted equivalent.

Read recent papers from the department, then write to two or three academics directly with your proposal, your master's transcript and one page on why their group. Applications go to the graduate institute rather than to the professor, but an academic who already knows your topic is what carries the file through the institute's committee.

The post-graduation stay may double. A YÖK circular to universities dated 2 August 2026, following a migration-authority legal opinion of 29 July 2026, allows the post-graduation short-term permit to be extended by a further year — up to two years instead of 12 months. No unified public regulation text has been published, so treat it as announced rather than settled. You still apply within six months of graduation, and it still confers no work rights.
