Top scholarships for African students

These are the largest, most reputable scholarships open to African students for study in Europe and the UK. Award values and deadlines change every cycle — confirm each one on the official site before you rely on it.

Pan-African vs country-specific awards

Not every “scholarship for Africans” is open to every African. Knowing which bucket an award sits in saves you from wasted applications.

Pan-African (broadly open across the continent)

• DAAD (Germany) and Erasmus Mundus (EU-wide) are open to applicants from across Africa, subject to the rules of each individual programme.
• Türkiye Scholarships welcome students from virtually all African countries at bachelor’s, master’s and PhD level.

Country-specific (a fixed eligibility list)

• Stipendium Hungaricum has bilateral agreements with 30+ African countries (though not all — Zimbabwe and Zambia are not eligible). Many agency blogs wrongly list all of Africa; we check the official country pages each cycle. Read the full rules on our Stipendium Hungaricum guide.
• Chevening and Commonwealth Scholarships are tied to UK government and Commonwealth membership — open to most, but not all, African nations.
• Poland’s NAWA programmes are the sharpest example: the general NAWA route lists Nigeria and Kenya but not Ghana, and the narrower Banach programme has a short, changing list that leaves out most of our origins. Applying when you’re not on the current list is wasted effort — confirm it each cycle.

This precision is the point. A list of 50 scholarships is useless if half of them quietly exclude your country. We’d rather tell you the five you can actually win.

Scholarships by destination country

Different European destinations fund African students in different ways.

Hungary — the most accessible fully funded route

Stipendium Hungaricum is the flagship: tuition-free study plus a monthly stipend, housing and insurance, with dedicated quotas for 30+ African countries. Nigeria, Ghana and Kenya are consistently among its top-five global applicant nations. (Eligible: Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, South Africa and many more. Not eligible: Zimbabwe, Zambia.)

Germany — free tuition, then scholarships for living costs

Public universities in Germany already charge no tuition, so the job of a scholarship here is to cover living costs. DAAD is the main funder — monthly stipend, travel and often insurance — concentrated at master’s and PhD level. See our DAAD scholarships guide for current programmes.

UK — competitive, prestige-led awards

The UK’s funding is dominated by Chevening (a fully funded one-year master’s) and Commonwealth Scholarships. Both are highly competitive and reward work experience, leadership and a clear plan to return home.

Poland — NAWA (check your country)

Poland’s NAWA master’s scholarships fund tuition and a stipend, but only for some African nations: the general NAWA route lists Nigeria and Kenya, not Ghana. Its narrower Banach programme has a short, changing eligible-country list that excludes most of our origins, so confirm it each cycle rather than assuming.

Türkiye — fully funded, continent-wide

Türkiye Scholarships are among the most generous and open: full tuition, stipend, accommodation, insurance and return flights, across all study levels, for students from almost every African country.

EU-wide — Erasmus Mundus

Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters fund a master’s that runs across two or more European countries, covering tuition, travel and a monthly allowance — open to African applicants on a per-programme basis.

Who’s eligible for scholarships for Africans?

Eligibility rules repeat across most major awards. You’ll usually need:

• Your nationality on the scholarship’s country list. This is the first filter and the one most often missed — always confirm on the official page (we flag the exclusions above).
• Strong academic grades. Most fully funded awards want a solid second-class upper (2:1) or equivalent for master’s entry; bachelor’s awards rank you on your school-leaving results (WAEC/WASSCE, KCSE, NSC, etc.).
• An admission or programme match. Some scholarships (Stipendium Hungaricum, Türkiye) bundle admission into one application; others (DAAD, Chevening) need you to choose eligible programmes or universities.
• English proof — IELTS/TOEFL, or a Medium of Instruction letter if your prior degree was taught in English.
• For UK awards (Chevening, Commonwealth): typically around two years’ work experience and a credible commitment to return home.

We do not promise anyone a scholarship — these are competitive and many strong applicants miss out. What we do is make sure you only apply where you’re actually eligible, and that your application is as strong as it can honestly be.

Building a winning application

The students who win tend to do the same boring things well:

1. Start 6–12 months early. Fully funded deadlines (Stipendium Hungaricum ~mid-January; Chevening ~November) fall long before the September intake. Late applications fail on logistics, not merit.
2. Pick the right scholarships, not the most. Two well-targeted applications beat ten where you’re ineligible or a poor fit.
3. Write a specific motivation/essay. Name the programme, the courses, the problem you want to solve back home. Generic essays read as generic.
4. Get your documents and translations ready early. Certified English translations of certificates and transcripts take time; missing or untranslated documents are a common cause of rejection.
5. Tell the truth. Inflated work experience or borrowed essays get caught — honesty is both safer and, in our experience, more convincing.

• Scholarships for Nigerian students — DAAD, Stipendium Hungaricum, general NAWA (eligible; Banach excludes Nigeria), Chevening, Commonwealth, plus PTDF/NNPC routes.
• Scholarships for Ghanaian students — Stipendium Hungaricum, DAAD, Erasmus Mundus, Chevening, Commonwealth (note: not eligible for NAWA Banach).
• Scholarships for Kenyan students — Stipendium Hungaricum, DAAD, general NAWA (eligible; confirm Banach yearly), Chevening, Commonwealth, GREAT, Mastercard Foundation.
• Scholarships for Zimbabwean students — Chevening yes; not eligible for Stipendium Hungaricum, Commonwealth or NAWA/Banach — read this before applying.
