Best scholarships for Egyptian students

An Egyptian passport clears the nationality test on nine schemes, and the first thing to check is level. Stipendium Hungaricum and Türkiye Bursları (Türkiye Scholarships) are the only two that fund a first degree; the other seven start at master’s.

Hungary pays tuition in full, a stipend of HUF 43,700–180,000 per month, health insurance and a dormitory place, across bachelor, master, phd, short-course, language-course. The last published call closed 15 January 2026 and every file needs a nomination from the Egyptian sending partner as well as a portal application — see our Stipendium Hungaricum guide.

Türkiye covers tuition at the placing university, adds TRY 4,500–9,000 per month, a state dormitory place, flights both ways and a compulsory year of Turkish, at roughly 5,000 awards a year. The window ran 10 January 2026 to 20 February 2026 in the last published cycle — see Türkiye Bursları.

Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters pays tuition in full and €1,400 per month, and you apply to each consortium rather than to Brussels; most windows run October to January (Erasmus Mundus).

DAAD Scholarships sends Egyptians to Germany with tuition waived by university, a stipend of €992–1,400 per month, travel and insurance. The Helmut-Schmidt-Programme intake for 2027 ran 1 June 2026 to 31 July 2026, with results December 2026 to January 2027; EPOS courses each set their own date (DAAD scholarships).

Chevening Scholarships funds master study in the UK, tuition in full with return travel and a living allowance. It opened 4 August 2026 and closes 6 October 2026 — the one live deadline this autumn (Chevening).

Four more are single-country routes: Eiffel Excellence Scholarship Programme in France, 433 awards at €1,200–2,100 per month; the Italian Government Scholarships for Foreign Students (MAECI) at €1,200 per month; OeAD / Ernst Mach Grants in Austria at €1,300 per month; and MAEC-AECID Scholarships in Spain, 41 awards a year.

What is NOT open to Egyptian students (or only partly)

Two schemes are closed outright. Commonwealth Scholarships: no — Egypt is not a Commonwealth member, so neither the Commonwealth awards nor Chevening’s Commonwealth-only strands apply; standard Chevening does. Poland’s Banach/NAWA programme: no, because Egypt is not on its partner list.

Three more are open on paper but narrow in practice. MAEC-AECID requires Permanent, non-temporary employment in or dependence on a public body in the applicant's own country, evidenced by the contract or appointment, plus written authorisation from the competent hierarchical superior, so it is not a scheme for ordinary students. Eiffel cannot be applied for by the student at all — a French institution files it. OeAD’s Ernst Mach worldwide grant funds a research stay rather than a degree, and you need an Austrian lecturer’s written consent before you can apply.

Treat any offer of a paid Stipendium Hungaricum “nomination” as fraud: the scheme states that genuine admission is free and no paid guarantee exists. Check any agent against our fake-agent checklist.

Fully funded vs partial — know the difference

Four of the nine pay for the course and the living costs. Stipendium Hungaricum and Erasmus Mundus cover tuition in full with a stipend; Türkiye adds dormitory and flights; Chevening pays tuition, Economy return travel between the country of residence and the UK by an approved route, for the scholar only, plus a travel top-up allowance and a monthly allowance.

The rest are stipend-only or partial, and the gap is tuition. Eiffel is the clearest case: None — tuition fees are not covered by the programme. MAEC-AECID covers tuition: none. The Italian grant is Partial — the call states that some universities exempt grant holders from enrolment and tuition fees. The exemption depends on the institution, does not cover regional taxes and does not apply to Italian language courses. DAAD and OeAD have tuition waived by university instead of paid, which works only at institutions that agree to waive it. Read the coverage line before the deadline, not after.

Scholarships by destination

Germany is the cheapest starting point even with no award: public tuition is free for a bachelor’s and free for a consecutive master’s, so a DAAD stipend of €992–1,400 per month funds living costs of €850–1,200 per month rather than fees.

Hungary is the main fully funded route into the EU, and self-funded study is close behind at €3,000–8,000 per year with living costs of €500–600 per month.

Türkiye combines the scholarship with the lowest public fees on our list, US$1,600–2,400 per year, and is the only destination here where the award places you at the university rather than the reverse.

France charges €178–2,902 per year at public universities, so Eiffel’s stipend usually matters more than its lack of a fee waiver — the route runs through the institution (Eiffel scholarship).

Italy tiers its fees by country income group, €200–4,200 per year, and the MAECI grant sits on top of a regional DSU award system (Italy scholarships).

Austria charges a flat €726.72 per semester for third-country nationals, and OeAD funds 1 to 9 months (Ernst Mach worldwide); 4 to 10 months at a university of applied sciences; the grant must be consumed by the end of 2028 rather than a full degree.

Spain’s public fees run €757–8,186 per year, and MAEC-AECID is only for public-sector employees.

Ireland, Malta, Cyprus and Poland have no bilateral scheme open to Egypt: Erasmus Mundus is the funded route into all four, and Poland’s own Banach programme excludes Egyptian applicants.

Eligibility & how to win

Grades come first. Egyptian degrees are classified Excellent / Very Good / Good / Pass (bands vary slightly by faculty: Arts/Law 90-100/80-89.99/65-79.99/50-64.99; Engineering 85-100/80-84.99/70-79.99/55-64.99), and DAAD wants an Above-average result in the first academic degree — upper (top performance) third of the cohort. Türkiye publishes a floor of 70%.

Age matters more than most applicants expect: 35 for Eiffel, 35 for OeAD, 35 for Türkiye and 40 for the Italian grant. Stipendium Hungaricum, Chevening and Erasmus Mundus publish none.

Work experience is Chevening’s real filter: At least 2,800 hours acquired after the undergraduate degree and over a minimum of two years — roughly two years of full-time work at 35 hours a week; full-time, part-time and voluntary work and paid or unpaid internships count, entered as up to 15 employment periods. DAAD’s EPOS strand asks for professional experience too; Erasmus Mundus and Türkiye ask for none.

Because Egypt’s schooling is Arabic-medium — English as an official language: no, medium-of-instruction waivers common: no — plan on a test. Centres are widely available: British Council Egypt — 10 IELTS centres including Agouza (Cairo), Sheikh Zayed, New Cairo, Nasr City, Dokki, Smart Village, Mansoura, AMIDEAST Cairo and Alexandria (TOEFL iBT, TOEFL ITP). Master’s floors are IELTS 6.5 in the UK and 6.5 in Germany.

On odds, only some schemes publish scale: 1024 OeAD grants in a year, 433 Eiffel awards, 41 MAEC-AECID places. Chevening and Stipendium Hungaricum publish no annual count. One targeted application beats four rushed ones.

Egypt’s own funding

Egypt funds its own students abroad through the Bi’that government missions, run by the Ministry of Higher Education’s Central Administration for Missions and Cultural Representation. Study outside Egypt is eligible: yes, and awards are supervised by the Egyptian cultural bureaus in the host country. The condition is a return bond — you commit to coming home and serving for a set period. The amount and the exact terms are not published: we checked cdm.mohesr.gov.eg and cdm.edu.eg and neither states them, so ask the Missions administration in writing before you sign. For scale, 50,815 Egyptian students were studying abroad in 2021.

Deadlines to watch

Only one major deadline is still open as you read this. In date order for the 2027/28 intake:

1. Chevening closes 6 October 2026, at 11:00 UTC, with results Mid-June 2027 onwards.
2. OeAD Ernst Mach worldwide closes 1 December 2026, for stays from September 2027.
3. Erasmus Mundus consortia mostly close between October 2026 and January 2027, each on its own date.
4. Stipendium Hungaricum has closed for the last published cycle and the 2027/28 call was not published as of September 2026; the recurring pattern is mid-November to mid-January, with an earlier national deadline set by the Egyptian sending partner.
5. Türkiye Bursları runs 10 January to 20 February; the 2027 dates were not published as of September 2026.
6. DAAD closed 31 July 2026, the Italian grant 26 March 2026 and MAEC-AECID 15 July 2026 — all four reopen for the following cycle.
