For Zambian students who want an English-taught EU degree without UK-level fees, the Republic of Cyprus is worth a serious look — as long as you go in with eyes open:

• English-taught degrees. Cyprus’s private universities — University of Nicosia, European University Cyprus and others — teach in English. Because Zambia is English-medium, most applicants face no language barrier and IELTS is often waived (confirm per university).
• Affordable for an EU country. Private-university tuition runs roughly €10,000–€11,500/year, cheaper than the UK or Ireland for similar English-taught programmes.
• Be honest about the trade-offs. Cyprus is not in the Schengen area, so the permit doesn’t let you travel freely across Europe, and bachelor’s graduates get no post-study stay-back — only master’s and PhD graduates do. We’d rather you know now.

Step-by-step: how to study in Cyprus from Zambia

Cyprus is an institution-assisted route — the university files your entry-permit application with Cyprus’s Civil Registry & Migration Department (CRMD) while you’re still in Zambia. Start about 6–9 months before your intended intake.

Step 1 — Get an offer and choose a recognised Republic of Cyprus university

Apply to an accredited Republic of Cyprus university with your Grade 12 School Certificate (ECZ) for a bachelor’s, or your degree and transcripts for a master’s. Because Zambia is English-medium, you don’t need certified translations. Note: KYSATS (Cyprus’s ENIC/NARIC body) recognises prior degrees for employment or further study, but it is not an entry-permit document, so you don’t need a KYSATS certificate just to be admitted.

Step 2 — The university files your entry-permit application

Once you accept your offer, the university submits the entry-permit application to the CRMD on your behalf — you don’t lodge it yourself, and you cannot apply from inside Cyprus on a tourist visa. You’ll provide certified documents, bank-certified proof of funds, the repatriation bank guarantee, your original police clearance and your first set of medical tests. The entry permit is normally examined within one month.

Step 3 — Complete the Pretoria visa step

Because there is no resident Cyprus mission in Zambia, the corridor is handled by the High Commission of Cyprus in Pretoria; the honorary consulate in Lusaka does not issue visas. After the CRMD approves your entry permit, confirm with the university and the High Commission exactly where and how you collect the national entry visa for your intake. Step 4 — Arrive, register and repeat your medical tests

Within days of arrival you register with the Aliens’ Register (€70, ≈ K1,575), take out mandatory “Plan A” health insurance, sign a rental agreement, and repeat the medical tests done at home. You then hold the temporary residence permit (the €70 entry + residence fee; €140 with the ARC card), examined within three months.

Credential checks for Zambian students (no APS)

There’s a lot of misinformation online, so here’s the truth for Zambia:

• No APS for Cyprus. APS is a Germany-only certificate (and only for China, Vietnam and India even there). Cyprus does not use it. Ignore any agent who tells you to get an “APS for Cyprus”.
• Grade 12 (ECZ) is used for bachelor’s admission; your degree and transcripts for a master’s.
• KYSATS is for recognition, not admission. KYSATS recognises foreign qualifications for employment or further study; it is not part of the entry-permit file, so you don’t need it just to enrol.
• No translations needed. Zambia is English-medium, so your documents don’t need certified translation.

Proof of funds and the bank guarantee

Cyprus has no single published national funds figure, but the working benchmark used by Republic of Cyprus universities (e.g. the University of Cyprus) is a bank balance of about €7,000 (≈ K157,500) to show you can fund your first year — reduced to about €5,000 with a 50% scholarship, or waived with a full scholarship. On top of that you must:

• Lodge a repatriation bank guarantee sized to the airfare from your country of origin (Zambia) — it’s refundable, not a fee.
• Show about €2,000 in cash when you land at the airport.

Two Zambia-specific points to plan for:

• Avoid the “€800 myth.” Some agents quote a tiny proof-of-funds figure to make Cyprus look effortless. The realistic working benchmark is ~€7,000 plus the guarantee and the €2,000 airport cash — budget for that, not K20,000.
• Show a clean, verifiable source of funds. Bank certification plus statements is the norm; “funds parking” (money that appears days before applying) is a classic refusal trigger.

Medical tests — what to expect (you sit them twice)

Cyprus’s medical step catches Zambian applicants off guard because it happens twice:

• Before you travel (in Zambia): original results for HIV, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and syphilis, plus a chest X-ray for TB, go into the entry-permit file.
• After you arrive (in Cyprus): you repeat the same tests as part of registering for the residence permit.

A serious result can affect your permit, so deal with any known condition before you travel and arrive prepared. (This is different from the UK, which requires a single pre-visa TB test only.)

Why Cyprus study applications get refused — and how we help

Cyprus does not publish a study-visa refusal rate by nationality, so be wary of any agent quoting a “98% success rate” for Cyprus — there is no official figure to base that on. The decisive gate is the entry-permit decision by the Migration Department, not a reported visa statistic.

Scholarships for Zambian students

Cyprus isn’t free, so funding help matters:

• University merit bursaries — University of Nicosia, European University Cyprus and others offer entry scholarships and tuition discounts open to international students, including Zambians. This is the most realistic funding route in Cyprus.
• Cyprus State Scholarship (IKYK) — bachelor’s up to €3,000/yr, master’s up to €4,000/yr, but it is primarily Cypriot/EU/resident-focused and Zambian eligibility is not confirmed — don’t bank on it; check the current call before applying.
• These are partial awards. Cyprus has no full “tuition + stipend + flights” government scholarship for Zambians. For fully funded routes, Zambians are eligible for DAAD (Germany), Chevening and Commonwealth (UK) and the Government of Ireland IES — but not Stipendium Hungaricum or Poland’s Banach.
