Why study in Germany from Ghana?

For Ghanaian students watching the cedi, Germany is one of the strongest-value destinations in the world:

• No tuition at public universities. Unlike the UK, US or Canada, German public universities don’t charge tuition — even to Ghanaian students. You pay only a small semester contribution (about €100–400) that usually includes a public-transport pass.
• No APS for Ghana. Germany’s APS (Akademische Prüfstelle) certificate applies only to applicants from China, Vietnam and India — not Ghana. Your certificates are verified another way (explained below). Ignore agency blogs that claim otherwise. ⚠️ Re-verify each intake — Germany has signalled possible APS expansion.
• You can stay and work after. Graduates get an 18-month residence permit to find a job related to their degree. IT, engineering and health are recognised shortage fields.
• You won’t be alone. Germany hosts roughly 402,000 international students, and Ghana is a steady, growing source. Most Ghanaian applicants study at Master’s level, where English-taught programmes are far more common.

Step-by-step: how to study in Germany from Ghana

Here is the route from Accra to a German campus. Because of the document-verification step (below), Ghanaian students should start about a year before their intended start date — earlier than most other countries.

Step 1 — Get your credentials checked (uni-assist + Anabin)

Choose your programme and check that the university and your qualification are recognised on Anabin (the official KMK/ZAB database — your school/degree must show as “H+“). Most universities then ask you to apply through uni-assist, which evaluates your BECE/WASSCE and degree against German standards. No APS certificate is needed for Ghana — but you will face a separate document-verification procedure (Step 4), so begin gathering originals now.

Step 2 — Secure a university admission letter

Apply to your chosen programme (through uni-assist or directly to the university). For a Master’s, you need a recognised bachelor’s degree and proof of English (IELTS/TOEFL) for English-taught courses. For a Bachelor’s, a WASSCE usually does not give direct entry — most Ghanaian applicants need a Studienkolleg (one-year foundation, often in German) plus the Feststellungsprüfung first (check Anabin per programme). When you’re accepted, the university issues an admission letter (Zulassung) — the document the visa office requires.

Step 3 — Open a blocked account (proof of funds)

To prove you can fund your first year, deposit €11,904 into a German blocked account (Sperrkonto) — a special account that releases about €992/month to you after you arrive. This is the main financial requirement for the visa (see the costs table below for the Cedi figure). You’ll also need proof of statutory, incoming health insurance that starts on entry (travel insurance is not accepted).

Step 4 — Verify your certificates and apply for the visa in Accra

Ghanaian certificates are not legalised by apostille for this route — instead, the German Embassy Accra runs a document-verification procedure through Embassy-appointed lawyers, authority-to-authority. This takes 6–10 months and costs €350 (Zone 1) / €550 (Zone 2) — it is the single biggest item on your timeline, so start it early. You apply for the student visa on the Consular Services Portal (digital.diplo.de/visa), then attend an in-person biometrics/interview appointment at the German Embassy in Accra. The visa fee is €75 (≈ GH₵1,020). There is no VFS for German student visas in Ghana — you apply directly to the Embassy.

On apostille: Ghana joined the Hague Apostille Convention in November 2024. However, the German Embassy Accra still uses its own lawyer-led document-verification procedure for Ghanaian education certificates rather than an apostille for this route — confirm the current process on the Embassy page before you start.

How much does it cost to study in Germany from Ghana?

Tuition is free at most public universities, so your real costs are the blocked account (which you keep — it’s your living money), the semester fee, insurance, the document-verification fee and one-off application/visa costs. All Cedi figures use 1 EUR ≈ GH₵13.6 (mid-market, Jun 2026) — the cedi moves, so re-check before you pay.

Credential verification for Ghanaian students (no APS)

This is the step Ghanaian applicants most often get wrong because of misinformation online. Here’s the truth:

• APS is NOT required for Ghana. There is no APS office in Accra for Ghanaian applicants. APS applies only to China, Vietnam and India. (⚠️ Re-verify each intake — policy can change.)
• uni-assist evaluates your certificates where the university uses it, converting your grades to the German scale.
• Anabin is the official database that decides whether your school and degree are recognised — your institution must read “H+”.
• Document verification at the Embassy. Because Ghanaian documents are not legalised via the usual channels, the German Embassy Accra verifies your BECE and WASSCE (and degree) through appointed lawyers, authority-to-authority. Budget €350/€550 and 6–10 months.
• Translations. Any document not in German or English must be officially translated (confirm the requirement per university).

The blocked account and proof of funds

Germany wants evidence you can support yourself for your first year without illegal work. The standard route is a blocked account (Sperrkonto):

• Amount: €11,904 for one year (≈ GH₵162,000 at the mid-market rate) — re-check before you transfer.
• How it works: the money is locked and releases about €992/month to you after you arrive — so it becomes your living budget, not a fee.
• Alternatives accepted: a recognised scholarship award letter, or a sponsor’s formal declaration of commitment (Verpflichtungserklärung) lodged with a German foreigners’ authority.

Visa appointment in Accra

• Where you apply: the German Embassy in Accra handles all Ghanaian student-visa applicants — there is no separate consulate elsewhere in the country.
• How: apply on the Consular Services Portal (digital.diplo.de/visa), then you’re invited to book an in-person biometrics/interview appointment at the Embassy. No VFS for German student visas in Ghana.
• Documents: admission letter, blocked-account confirmation, statutory incoming health insurance, passport, certificates + transcripts (with the completed Embassy verification), and the required application forms (confirm the current checklist).
• Fee: €75 (paid in cedis ≈ GH₵1,020).
• No TB test is required for the German student visa (this differs from the UK).
• Timeline: the visa decision itself takes several weeks to a couple of months, but the 6–10 month document-verification step usually dominates your timeline — start a full year ahead.

Honest note on approval odds. Germany does not publish a student (Type D) visa refusal rate by nationality, so be wary of any agent quoting a “98% success rate” for Germany — there is no official figure to base that on. The Ghana figure you may see (around 22.9% for 2024) is the Schengen short-stay refusal rate, which is a different visa and should not be read as your student-visa odds.

Scholarships for Ghanaian students

You don’t need a scholarship to afford Germany — tuition is already free. But funding the blocked account is easier with help:

• DAAD EPOS — development-related Master’s scholarships; Ghana is eligible. Pays a monthly stipend (~€934) plus insurance and travel. Needs ~2 years’ work experience and a degree under 6 years old.
• DAAD Study Scholarships and Deutschlandstipendium (€300/month) — open to international students.
• GETFund / Ghana Scholarships Secretariat — government postgraduate sponsorship for study abroad, including Germany; confirm current terms and deadline.
