Study in the UK from Ghana
To study in the UK from Ghana you need a CAS from a licensed university, then a Student visa: a £558 application fee, the £776/year health surcharge, and proof of funds (£1,529/month London or £1,171/month outside) held 28 days. A TB test is required, and you apply through VFS Global in Accra.
How to study in the UK from Ghana
-
Get an offer and your CAS
Apply via UCAS (bachelor's) or directly to the university (master's). WASSCE alone usually needs an International Foundation Year for bachelor's entry. When you confirm your place, the university issues a CAS — the core document for the visa. No UK ENIC statement is required by UKVI.
-
Prepare your proof of funds (the 28-day rule)
Hold Year-1 tuition plus living costs (GBP 1,529 per month London or GBP 1,171 per month outside, up to nine months) in your account for 28 consecutive days, with a statement dated within 31 days of applying. Ghana is not on the differential-evidence list, so submit full evidence upfront.
-
Take the TB test
For courses longer than six months, get a TB test certificate from an approved clinic — five across Accra and Kumasi (Akai House, Globe Health, IOM MHAC and Wellnest in Accra; Wellnest and IOM MHAC in Kumasi). The certificate is valid for six months. Book at least 10 weeks ahead.
-
Apply for the Student visa (VFS Accra)
Apply online, pay the GBP 558 fee and the GBP 776 per year Immigration Health Surcharge upfront, then give biometrics at the VFS Global centre in Accra. Standard decisions take about three weeks.
Below is the full step-by-step: how your offer and CAS work, the real costs in Cedis, the proof-of-funds rule, the TB test, refusal reasons, and the scholarships open to Ghanaians.
Why study in the UK from Ghana?
For Ghanaian students, the UK is one of the most established study corridors — and for good reasons, alongside honest trade-offs:
- World-ranked, English-taught degrees. Ghana is anglophone, so there is no foreign language to learn first, and a UK degree carries weight everywhere.
- Shorter courses. A taught master’s is usually one year, so you pay for fewer years than in the US, Canada or Australia.
- A post-study work visa. The Graduate Route lets you stay and work after you finish — currently two years, falling to 18 months for applications on or after 1 January 2027.
- The honest part. The UK is one of the most expensive destinations, and Ghana has the highest student refusal rate of the big African UK corridors — about 16.7% in the year ending March 2026, roughly one in six, almost always over financial evidence. Rigorous document preparation, not luck, is what gets you through.

Step-by-step: how to study in the UK from Ghana
Here is the route from Accra to a UK campus. Start about a year before your intended start date, because the TB test and proof-of-funds windows need planning.
Step 1 — Get an offer and your CAS
Apply to your programme (UCAS for most bachelor’s; directly to the university for a master’s). A WASSCE alone usually does not give direct bachelor’s entry — many Ghanaian applicants need an International Foundation Year first. When the university accepts you and you confirm your place, it issues a CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) — the single document the visa depends on. There is no UK ENIC statement required by UKVI; the university assesses your qualifications.
Step 2 — Prepare your proof of funds (the 28-day rule)
Hold the required money in your account for 28 consecutive days, ending no more than 31 days before you apply. You must show your first-year tuition (as stated on the CAS) plus living costs of £1,529/month (London) or £1,171/month (outside London) for up to nine months. Ghana is not on the UK’s differential-evidence list, so you must submit full financial evidence upfront — this is the single biggest reason genuine applicants get refused.
Step 3 — Take the TB test
UK visas for courses longer than six months require a tuberculosis (TB) test certificate. Use an approved clinic — there are five across Accra and Kumasi, not IOM-only: in Accra, Akai House Clinic, Globe Health, IOM MHAC (22 Odoi Kwao St, Airport Residential) and Wellnest; in Kumasi, Wellnest and IOM MHAC. The certificate is valid for six months, so time it close to your application. Book at least 10 weeks ahead; slots fill up.
Step 4 — Apply for the Student visa (VFS Accra)
Apply online, pay the £558 application fee and the Immigration Health Surcharge of £776/year upfront, then book biometrics at the VFS Global centre in Accra (Mezzanine Floor, Grand Oyeeman Building, South Liberation Link). VFS replaced TLScontact on 22 Oct 2024. Standard decisions take about three weeks. See our full UK student visa fee guide for the exact costs in Cedis.
How much does it cost to study in the UK from Ghana?
The UK is not a budget destination. Your real costs are tuition (you pay the international rate, never the lower “Home” fee), the money you must prove, the visa fee, the health surcharge and the TB test. All Cedi figures use 1 GBP ≈ ₵15.8 (mid-market, June 2026) — the Cedi is volatile, so re-check before you pay.
| Item | Cost (GBP) | Cost (Cedis ≈) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| International tuition — taught master’s | ~£20,000/yr (typical) | ~₵316,000/yr | Classroom degrees cheapest; lab/clinical far higher (confirm per course) |
| Maintenance you must prove — outside London | £1,171/mo × 9 = £10,539 | ≈ ₵166,500 | Held 28 consecutive days; on top of Year-1 tuition |
| Maintenance — London | £1,529/mo × 9 = £13,761 | ≈ ₵217,400 | Higher London rate |
| Student visa application fee | £558 | ≈ ₵8,820 | Paid online, from outside the UK |
| Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) | £776/yr | ≈ ₵12,260/yr | Paid upfront for full visa length |
| TB test | ~£70–75 (IOM ≈ USD 85) | ≈ ₵1,060 (Akai), ₵1,080 (Globe) | Required for courses >6 months |
| One-way flight Accra → London | ~£420–510 | ~₵6,600–8,100 | Volatile; higher in peak season |
| Est. first-year total (taught MA, outside London, ~£20k tuition) | ≈ £32,400 | ≈ ₵512,000 | London/elite/lab/medical materially higher |
The biggest numbers are tuition and the maintenance you must prove — but the maintenance is your own money for rent and living, not a fee paid to anyone. For the exact fees and how to pay, see our UK student visa fee guide.
Your CAS and credential check
Unlike Germany, the UK does not require a separate government credential certificate at the visa stage:
- The university assesses your qualifications (WASSCE, prior degree, transcripts) when it makes your offer.
- The CAS is the core document. Your CAS number plus your passport are the heart of the visa application.
- UK ENIC (a statement of comparability) is requested by some admissions teams, not by the visa office. Don’t pay for it unless a university asks.
- Translations. As an anglophone country, Ghanaian documents need no translation; certify any document not in English.
We check every document — CAS details, transcripts, financial evidence — before you submit. See how we vet your documents.
Proof of funds and the 28-day rule
This is where most genuine Ghanaian applicants run into trouble, so get it right:
- What to show: Year-1 tuition on the CAS plus living costs — £1,529/month (London) or £1,171/month (outside London) for up to nine months (so £13,761 or £10,539). These rates apply to applications on or after 11 Nov 2025.
- The 28-day rule: the full amount must sit in your account (or your parent/sponsor’s, with proof of relationship) for 28 consecutive days, and your closing balance can never dip below the required figure during that window. The statement must be dated within 31 days of applying.
- Ghana is not on the differential-evidence list, so you submit financial evidence with the application — there is no shortcut.
- Source of funds matters. A clean, verifiable money trail beats a last-minute lump sum. Sudden deposits invite scrutiny — and with Ghana’s higher refusal rate, that scrutiny is real.

The TB test for Ghanaian applicants
A UK student visa for a course longer than six months requires a TB test certificate (this differs from Germany, which has no TB step):
- Where: approved clinics only — five across Accra and Kumasi. Accra: Akai House Clinic, Globe Health, IOM MHAC (Airport Residential), Wellnest. Kumasi: Wellnest and IOM MHAC.
- Cost: IOM ≈ USD 85 for ages 11+; Akai House ≈ ₵1,060; Globe Health ≈ ₵1,080.
- Validity: six months — so don’t test too early.
- What it is: a chest X-ray (and follow-up tests if needed). A clear certificate is part of your visa bundle. Book at least 10 weeks ahead.
Refusal reasons — and how we help
The UK×Ghana corridor refused about 16.7% of student applications in the year ending March 2026 — the highest of the three big West/East African UK corridors, and noticeably higher than Nigeria’s ~10.3%. That is roughly one in six. Be wary of any agent quoting “98% success” or a “guaranteed visa”: there is no such thing, and the official figure is public. The common refusal drivers are:
- Financial evidence failures — the 28-day balance dipped, the statement was out of date, or the source of funds wasn’t clear. This is the number-one cause.
- Wrong maintenance amount — using the old £1,483/£1,136 figures, or forgetting to add Year-1 tuition on top of living costs.
- Credibility doubts — a weak or inconsistent answer about why this course, this university, and your plans after graduation.
- Missing documents — no TB certificate, an expired one, or an untranslated document.
Because Ghana’s corridor is scrutinised harder than most, careful preparation matters even more here. We pre-check your bank statements against the exact rule, rehearse the credibility questions, and make sure every document is present and in date before you submit. That preparation is how we move the odds in your favour — honestly, not with empty promises.
Scholarships for Ghanaian students
UK study is expensive, so funding matters. The big fully funded routes for Ghanaians:
- Chevening — the UK government (FCDO) award for a one-year master’s. Covers full tuition, a monthly stipend, return flights, visa costs and up to £75 toward the TB test. Ghana is eligible. It rewards work experience (~2 years), leadership and a clear plan to return home.
- Commonwealth Master’s & PhD Scholarships — fully funded by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission; Ghana is eligible. Covers tuition, airfare, stipend and allowances.
- GETFund / Ghana Scholarships Secretariat — Ghana’s national scholarship body sponsors postgraduate study abroad, including the UK; check the current terms and deadline on the official site.
Deadlines are firm and the 2027/28 Chevening and Commonwealth cycles were not yet open as of mid-2026 — re-check from around August 2026. See the full list on our scholarships for Ghanaian students page.

Frequently asked questions
Budget roughly £32,400 (about ₵512,000) for year one at a typical ~£20,000 taught master's outside London. That covers tuition, the nine-month maintenance you must prove (£10,539), the £558 visa fee, the £776/year health surcharge and the TB test. London, elite, lab and medical courses cost materially more. The Cedi is volatile, so re-check the rate before you budget.
You must show your first-year tuition (on your CAS) plus living costs of £1,529/month in London or £1,171/month outside (up to nine months — £13,761 or £10,539). The money must sit in your account for 28 consecutive days, with a statement dated within 31 days of applying. Ghana is not on the differential-evidence list, so you submit this proof upfront.
Yes. A UK visa for a course longer than six months requires a TB test certificate from an approved clinic — there are five across Accra and Kumasi (Akai House, Globe Health, IOM MHAC and Wellnest in Accra; Wellnest and IOM MHAC in Kumasi). It costs around USD 85 (about ₵1,060–1,080) and is valid for six months, so don't take it too early. Book at least 10 weeks ahead.
About 16.7% of Ghanaian student applications were refused in the year ending March 2026 — roughly one in six, and the highest of the major African UK corridors (higher than Nigeria's ~10.3%). Most refusals are over financial evidence: a dipped 28-day balance, an out-of-date statement, or an unclear source of funds. Ignore any agent promising "98%" or a "guaranteed" visa.
Standard decisions take about three weeks from outside the UK. You apply online, pay the £558 fee and the £776/year health surcharge, take a TB test, and give biometrics at the VFS Global centre in Accra. Paid priority options can be faster but vary.
