Debrecen — University of Debrecen
QS World 2026: ranked 563 — the highest-ranked university outside Budapest. The single most popular destination for African students: 1,167 Nigerian students enrolled in 2024 per official KSH data. Broad English-taught offer across medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, engineering, business and computer science. Medicine: USD 16,900/year. General BA: USD 6,000–7,500/year. Debrecen is a large university city with good student infrastructure and a well-established African student community.
Győr — Széchenyi István University
QS World 2026: ranked 1001–1200. Engineering and IT focus (automotive/manufacturing sector links). English BA: EUR 3,400–5,200/year (confirmed per programme, June 2026). Lower profile internationally but one of the more affordable medium-sized cities. The dormitory rate (HUF 18,000/month) is the second-lowest in the dataset.
Miskolc — University of Miskolc
QS World 2026: ranked 1201–1400. Engineering, materials science, law. English tuition: EUR 4,000–8,000/year (per programme range, confirmed June 2026). Miskolc is a smaller industrial city in northern Hungary. Dormitory costs (HUF 40,000/month) are higher than Szeged or Győr despite its smaller size — factor this in.
Budapest
Home to Semmelweis University (top 101–200 globally by QS subject in medicine), BME (QS 711–720, engineering), ELTE (QS 584, broad), and Corvinus (business/economics). If your target programme is exclusively offered at a Budapest institution, the higher cost is simply part of the picture. For medicine specifically, Semmelweis at ~USD 20,900/year in tuition is roughly USD 4,000/year more expensive than Debrecen — on a 6-year programme, that gap is approximately USD 24,000 in tuition alone, before the accommodation difference.
