Stipendium Hungaricum

Eligibility depends on bilateral sending-partner agreements between Hungary and your home country, managed by Tempus Public Foundation. As of June 2026 (confirmed against the official programme at stipendiumhungaricum.hu/partners/):

Türkiye Scholarships

Open to citizens of all countries. Academic thresholds (from turkiyeburslari.gov.tr, confirmed June 2026):

Note: Türkiye Scholarships does not award graduate (Master’s/PhD) scholarships in health sciences. Medicine, dentistry and pharmacy are available at undergraduate level only.

What Each Scholarship Covers

Stipendium Hungaricum — confirmed from the official 2026/27 Call for Applications (PDF, Tempus)

• Tuition: free (paid directly to the Hungarian university)
• Monthly stipend: HUF 43,700/month — approximately €123 at the June 2026 rate (1 EUR ≈ HUF 354; re-check this rate, which is volatile)
• Accommodation: free dormitory placement or HUF 40,000/month housing allowance if dormitory is unavailable
• Health insurance: covered up to HUF 65,000/year

The HUF stipend is modest in EUR terms. However, because tuition, housing and health insurance are separately covered, the cash stipend is for personal expenses — food, transport, SIM card, leisure. Hungary’s smaller cities (Debrecen, Szeged, Pécs) are meaningfully cheaper to live in than Budapest.

Türkiye Scholarships — confirmed from turkiyeburslari.gov.tr (June 2026)

• Tuition: free
• Accommodation: dormitory
• Monthly stipend: 4,500 TL (Bachelor’s) · 6,500 TL (Master’s) · 9,000 TL (PhD)
• Health insurance: covered
• Turkish language course: one year, free, before the degree begins
• Return flights: one ticket at programme start, one at graduation

⚠️ Turkish lira warning. The TL stipend amounts are confirmed on the official site, but Turkey’s high inflation means the lira’s EUR or USD value changes continuously. Do not make a direct comparison to the SH HUF stipend without first checking the live TRY/EUR rate. The World Study Africa verified-figures record used by World Study’s research team does not pin a TRY rate for this reason.

Where You Study — and Why It Matters

Hungary: EU and Schengen Member

Hungary has been an EU member since 2004 and is part of the Schengen Area. Studying in Hungary means:

• You hold a Hungarian residence permit valid within Schengen for short stays during study
• After graduating, you can apply for a Hungarian post-study permit (job-seeking or work), which may eventually convert to EU Blue Card status or other EU work permits
• A Hungarian degree is recognised under EU standards for professional qualifications
• Study time in Hungary does not count toward Hungarian permanent residence (official OIF policy — you must first convert to a work permit before the PR clock starts) — but the EU foothold is still real

For Zimbabwe and Zambia students: SH is unavailable, so Hungary as a self-funded destination is still possible — check costs at /study-in-hungary/.

Turkey: Outside EU and Schengen

Turkey is an EU accession candidate but is not a member state and is not part of the Schengen Area. Studying in Turkey means:

• Your Turkish student visa does not give any EU access rights
• After graduating, a separate EU work or study permit must be obtained in each European country independently — your Turkish study history does not help
• Turkish degrees can be assessed by ENIC-NARIC offices in EU countries for recognition, but the process is per-country and not automatic
• Turkey has its own labour market — if your goal is a career in Turkey, a Turkish degree is a direct route

If you are from Zimbabwe or Zambia and want a fully funded option, Türkiye Scholarships may be one of the few available to you. DAAD and Erasmus Mundus are also open to both countries.

Application Routes

Stipendium Hungaricum

1. Identify your national Sending Partner (government body in your country — the list is at stipendiumhungaricum.hu)
2. Apply through your Sending Partner’s process — their internal deadline is often in November or December, earlier than the official 15 January Tempus cutoff
3. Your Sending Partner submits your nomination to the SH portal (DreamApply)
4. You select up to two Hungarian programmes in DreamApply
5. Institutions assess and nominate candidates to Tempus for final selection

The two-choice limit in DreamApply is firm. Research programmes and universities carefully before the window opens.

Türkiye Scholarships

1. Create an account in the TBBS system at tbbs.turkiyeburslari.gov.tr
2. Use the TBBS department search to build your shortlist of programmes
3. Submit your application online between 10 January and 20 February
4. Shortlisted applicants may be called to an interview (in-person or online)
5. The programme places you at a university and department — you do not independently apply to Turkish universities

There is no national intermediary. You apply directly. This makes TB simpler to navigate than SH but also means the competition pool is global from day one.

Who Should Apply for Which

Choose Stipendium Hungaricum if:
– You are from Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, Uganda or Egypt
– Your goal is a European degree and the EU career pathway
– You are comfortable with a smaller monthly cash stipend because housing and tuition are separately covered
– You want to be based in one country — Hungary — for the duration of your studies

Choose Türkiye Scholarships if:
– You are from Zimbabwe or Zambia (SH is not available to you)
– You are from any of the eight WSA origins and want to study in Turkey specifically
– Your career goal is Turkey-based or in fields where Turkish universities have genuine strength (engineering, architecture, social sciences, international relations)
– You want a return flight included in the package
– You understand the TL stipend’s volatility and have budgeted accordingly

If you want to compare against other options: DAAD pays €934/month and is open to all eight origins; Erasmus Mundus pays €1,400/month for non-EU students and covers multiple EU countries. Neither requires work experience at Master’s level (Erasmus Mundus) or requires it only for the EPOS track (DAAD).
