Study-Abroad Document Checklist for Nigerian Students

Stage 1: University Application Documents

These documents are submitted to the university (or to uni-assist for Germany). Requirements vary by programme — check the university’s international admissions page for exact specifications.

For all destinations

• Academic transcripts — certified copies of all secondary and tertiary results. For WASSCE: include the result slip and the certificate once issued.
• WAEC/NECO results (original or certified copies) — with the scratch card number and PIN for online verification at waecdirect.org. This is essential for German applications.
• Degree certificate (if applying for postgraduate) — with classification and grading scale on the reverse of the transcript (the grading key is mandatory for many European institutions).
• CGPA/GPA statement — Nigerian universities use the NUC 5-point scale: First Class 4.50–5.00; 2:1 (Second Class Upper) 3.50–4.49; 2:2 (Second Class Lower) 2.40–3.49.
• Statement of purpose / personal statement — written in the language of the application (English for English-taught programmes; German for German-taught).
• Letters of recommendation — typically two academic or professional references.
• CV / résumé — especially for postgraduate applications.
• English language certificate — IELTS, TOEFL or equivalent (see Stage 2 notes per destination for when WAEC English is accepted instead).
• Passport copy — valid for at least the duration of the course.
• Application fee payment — varies by institution and country.

Germany-specific: uni-assist

Applications to most German public universities go through uni-assist (uni-assist.de). The fee is €75 for the first course application, plus €30 for each additional course. You will need:

• WAEC/NECO original certificates with scratch card (for online result verification)
• Degree transcripts with grading key
• IELTS/TOEFL (for English-taught master’s programmes) or German language certificate (for German-taught programmes; minimum B2 for a student visa)

APS is not required for Nigeria. The APS certificate is required only for China, Vietnam and India (uni-assist.de APS glossary). Any agent who tells you otherwise is wrong.

Degree recognition is checked on the Anabin database — your Nigerian institution needs an “H+” rating. Check your institution at anabin.kmk.org before applying.

Stage 2: Visa Documents — Core List (All Destinations)

These are required by the embassy or visa application centre regardless of destination.

• Valid international passport — minimum 6 months’ validity beyond your intended stay; blank pages for visas.
• Completed visa application form — specific to each country (VIDEX for Germany; AVATS for Ireland; online gov.uk form for UK; e-konsulat for Poland).
• Unconditional offer letter from the university — must be from an accredited institution, clearly stating course name, duration, start date and tuition fees.
• Proof of tuition fee payment (first semester or year, where required).
• Proof of financial means — see destination-specific requirements below.
• Health insurance documentation — type required varies by destination.
• Passport-sized photographs — to the embassy’s specified format.
• Biometric data — collected in person at the visa centre or embassy.
• NPC birth certificate (or Nigerian equivalent) — required by most destinations as standard identity documentation.

Stage 3: Destination-Specific Visa Requirements

Germany

Visa centre: German Consulate-General Lagos (most applicants) or Embassy Abuja (limited categories — mainly northern states and special cases).

Additional documents:
– Blocked account (Sperrkonto) confirmation: €11,904/year (€992/month) — proof that this account is opened and funded. nigeria.diplo.de
– NPC birth certificate or sworn Declaration of Age affidavit (hospital birth certificate is not sufficient alone)
– WAEC/NECO results with scratch card for online verification
– Proof of Studienkolleg admission (if undergraduate route) or unconditional degree-programme offer (if postgraduate)
– German language certificate B2 (for German-taught programmes) or IELTS/TOEFL (for English-taught master’s)
– Proof of statutory health insurance (~€146/month) — can be purchased after admission, proof of coverage needed

Fee: €75 (≈ ₦118,125 at June 2026 rates). The remonstration (internal appeal) process was abolished from 1 July 2025 — only court appeal remains.

United Kingdom

Visa centre: VFS Global — Lagos Ikeja, Lagos Victoria Island or Abuja.

Additional documents:
– TB test certificate from an UKBA-approved IOM clinic (mandatory for stays over 6 months; approximately £75–95)
– Financial evidence showing £1,171/month outside London or £1,529/month in London — maximum £10,539 or £13,761 respectively (9 months). Nigeria is not on the UK’s “differential evidence” list, meaning full financial evidence is required.
– ATAS clearance certificate (for certain postgraduate STEM subjects)
– Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) — provided by the university

Fee: £558 (≈ ₦1,008,306). Immigration Health Surcharge: £776/year, paid upfront for the full visa length.

Ireland

Visa centre: AVATS online application, documents submitted in person at VFS Global Nigeria, decided by Embassy Abuja.

Additional documents:
– Proof of funds: €10,000 for a one-year course (effective 30 June 2025), plus course fees. Evidence must be in a licensed commercial bank account — Ireland rejects microfinance, mortgage and thrift/esusu-society statements.
– Evidence of ties to Nigeria (to show intention to return) — employment, property, family.
– Prior visa refusals must be disclosed — concealing a prior refusal in an Irish application triggers refusal without appeal and a potential five-year ban.

Fee: €60 single-entry / €100 multi-entry (≈ ₦94,500 / ₦157,500).

Poland

Visa centre: Consular Section, Polish Embassy Abuja — direct application via e-konsulat.gov.pl. Originals only. Decision in 15–30 days (students typically 15–21 days).

Critical Nigeria-specific requirement:
– Superlegalisation of academic documents — Nigeria is not in the Hague Apostille Convention. Documents must go through: (1) Federal Ministry of Education Abuja → (2) Ministry of Foreign Affairs Abuja → (3) Polish Embassy Abuja. Start 8–12 weeks before your visa appointment.
– Proof of funds: 776 PLN/month × 15 months + tuition + return travel (2,500 PLN). Consulates in practice expect evidence of approximately €2,000–2,500/month.

Fee: €200 (since 1 January 2026 — the old €80/€135 rate is stale).

Hungary

Visa centre: Embassy of Hungary, Abuja — via Enter Hungary system.

Additional documents:
– Proof of tuition payment or scholarship award
– Evidence of sufficient financial means (no fixed published threshold — demonstrate tuition paid plus approximately €7,000/year living costs plus health insurance and return airfare)
– Health insurance

Fee: €110 (≈ ₦173,250).

Stipendium Hungaricum holders: the scholarship award letter substitutes for most financial documentation.

Malta

Visa centre: VFS Global (Lagos or Abuja) → Identità Central Visa Unit. Processing: approximately 6–8 weeks.

Additional documents:
– Two-stage financial evidence: at least €746/month for the D-visa (entry); at least €950/month for the residence permit
– MQRIC/MFHEA credential recognition — apply online at mfhea.mt/academic-qualifications/. Fee: €65 for a foreign qualification; English or Maltese translation required if documents are in another language.
– Schengen health insurance (minimum €30,000 coverage) for the D-visa stage; University of Malta students are exempt from the €100,000 private-college requirement at permit stage

Fee: ~€100 (optional premium €300 for priority processing).

Cyprus (Republic of Cyprus only — not TRNC)

Visa/permit channel: The Republic of Cyprus university books your entry-permit appointment. Applications go through the High Commission Lagos or the Abuja office.

Additional documents:
– Pre-arrival medicals — mandatory: HIV, Hepatitis B and C, syphilis and TB (chest X-ray). These must be completed before the permit is processed.
– KYSATS equivalence certificate — academic recognition from kysats.ac.cy; decisions take approximately 60 days (ENIC/NARIC process).
– Proof of funds — UCY publishes a benchmark of approximately €7,000 bank balance; the “€800 minimum” cited on some agency sites is not an official national rule.
– Bank guarantee or blocked deposit — commonly required alongside the bank balance.

Residence permit fee: €55–140.

⚠️ Confirm the institution is in the Republic of Cyprus (not TRNC). Legitimate Republic of Cyprus universities include the University of Cyprus (UCY), Cyprus University of Technology (CUT), University of Nicosia (UNIC), European University Cyprus (EUC) and others — check at moec.gov.cy.

Nigeria-Specific Watch-Outs

• WAEC scratch card is essential — German missions, and some other destinations, verify WAEC/NECO results online using your card number and PIN. Keep all scratch cards and certificates safe.
• NPC birth certificate — required by the German mission. If unavailable, a sworn Declaration of Age affidavit can substitute. Hospital-issued certificates are not sufficient.
• Dual-market FX — proof-of-funds amounts are set in euros or pounds. The rate at which you convert Naira matters. Re-check the CBN rate (cbn.gov.ng/rates) before every transfer. At June 2026 rates: ₦1,575/€, ₦1,807/£.
• Financial document integrity — Nigeria is a high-scrutiny origin. All bank statements must be genuine and consistent. Ireland’s zero-tolerance policy imposes a five-year ban for a single forged document.
• Undisclosed prior refusals — Ireland and the UK require you to declare all prior visa refusals. Concealment is treated as deception and results in immediate refusal.
