Rent: The Biggest Variable

The dormitory is, by a wide margin, the cheapest option. Places are limited — apply to your university’s accommodation office as early as possible after receiving your offer. In Szeged specifically, the cheapest dormitory rate is approximately HUF 13,000/month (~€37), which makes it one of the most affordable university cities in Central Europe.
Food and Drink
Food costs are broadly similar across Hungary — it is rent that varies, not meals. The official data gives:
- An inexpensive restaurant meal in Budapest: approximately HUF 4,000 (~€11)
- A university canteen meal in Pécs: HUF 1,500–2,500 (~€4–7)
Students who cook at home and use the canteen will spend roughly HUF 60,000–90,000/month (~€170–254) on food. Students who eat out regularly should budget more.
Transport
Hungary’s public transport network is good, and student discounts exist. Published figures from the official portal:

Budapest’s metro, tram and bus network is comprehensive. In Debrecen, Szeged and Pécs, most university facilities are within walking distance or a short bus ride. Budget HUF 4,000–8,000/month (~€11–23) for transport in most cities outside Budapest; Budapest commuters may spend more.
Health Insurance
Comprehensive health insurance is a legal requirement — it is needed for both university enrolment and your residence permit. You are not automatically covered by Hungarian state healthcare as a self-funded international student.
The cheapest route is a commercial student policy. The University of Pécs recommends Generali’s “STUDIUM” product at approximately HUF 120,000/year (~€300/year, or ~€25/month). That is the figure to budget unless your programme explicitly states insurance is included.
The alternative — voluntary enrolment in the national system (NEAK) — costs 30% of the minimum wage per month. Almost no self-funded student uses this route; the commercial policy is far more cost-effective.

Realistically, 20 hours/week of part-time work in a café or on campus could bring in HUF 90,000–120,000/month net — enough to cover food and transport with some left over. This is not income to count on before arrival, but it is a realistic supplement once you are settled.
What You Must Prove to the Authorities
Hungary does not publish a fixed proof-of-funds amount. The official position is “sufficient resources” assessed case by case. The practical advice — consistent with what the OIF (Aliens Policing) actually asks for — is to show: tuition paid + approximately €7,000/year in living funds + health insurance + return airfare. A bank statement or a notarised sponsor declaration covering these amounts is the standard approach.

If you secure the Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship, the budget picture changes significantly. The scholarship covers tuition in full, provides HUF 43,700/month (~€123/month as of June 2026) as a living stipend, and adds either free dormitory accommodation or a HUF 40,000/month (~€113) accommodation contribution, plus medical insurance up to HUF 65,000/year (~€184).
