Study in Malta from Zimbabwe: entry, visa and costs
A ZIMSEC A-Level at an average grade of C or better gives direct entry to a University of Malta bachelor's degree, with no foundation year and no separate English test. Non-EU tuition is €8,500–10,800 per year and you must show €746–950 per month. The catch is the visa: Malta has no mission in Zimbabwe, so the file goes through Pretoria.
Is Malta a good choice from Zimbabwe?
Zimbabwe is one of only two origins we cover whose school certificate reaches a Maltese bachelor’s degree without a bridging year, which removes a year of fees and a year of living costs. Teaching is in English — English and Maltese are the official languages — and your O and A-Level English satisfies the university’s language requirement.
The system is small: 8 recognised institutions and 8,252 international students in 2023/24, 502 of them African. Non-EU bachelor’s tuition at the University of Malta is €8,500–10,800 per year, private colleges €5,750–19,500 per year, and living €950–1,600 per month — see the Malta country guide.
The catch is consular, not academic: every file is lodged in South Africa, which adds cost and a border to cross before a decision is made.
Entry with the ZIMSEC / Cambridge A-Level
The University of Malta accepts the ZIMSEC GCE Advanced Level directly: an overall average grade C or better, with passes in a language other than English, a humanistic subject and a science subject, preferably Mathematics. O or A-Level English at grade C or better meets the language requirement, so that route needs no IELTS.
Queen Mary University of London’s Malta campus also takes ZIMSEC A-levels directly, at AAA including Biology or Chemistry plus a second science, for undergraduate medicine at €26,000–39,500 per year. For a master’s, a Zimbabwean bachelor’s must first be confirmed as comparable to a Maltese first-cycle degree by MQRIC, which charges €50 plus €2 postage; the classification bar is Second Class Honours, or Category II.
The student visa from Zimbabwe
Malta has no consulate anywhere in Zimbabwe. Applications go to VFS Global South Africa (Pretoria) and are decided by the Central Visa Unit in Malta. The locally quoted cost is €250–300, against Malta’s standard €100–150; biometrics are taken in person. Processing is 6–8 weeks, inside Malta’s national range of 3 to 9 weeks.
Funds are checked twice, at €746–950 per month, and the permit adds €50 — how proof of funds works sets out both stages. Zimbabwe is not a Hague Apostille country, so certificates are legalised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade in Harare. No pre-departure medical applies: the TB check is a chest X-ray within four weeks of arrival.

- Dates come one cycle at a time: the University of Malta’s cut-off for October 2026 was 1 July, and the 2027/28 date is not yet published.
