Why study in Cyprus from Egypt?

For Egyptian students who want an English-taught EU degree without UK-level fees — and a destination just a short flight across the Mediterranean — the Republic of Cyprus is worth a serious look, as long as you go in with eyes open:

• English-taught degrees. Cyprus’s private universities — University of Nicosia, European University Cyprus and others — teach in English, so you sidestep a German-language or Studienkolleg barrier. You will still meet each university’s English requirement (IELTS/TOEFL or an accepted equivalent).
• Affordable for an EU country. Private-university tuition runs roughly €7,000–€10,000/year, cheaper than the UK or Ireland for similar English-taught programmes.
• Geographically close. Cyprus is one of the nearest EU countries to Egypt — a short flight from Cairo to Larnaca — and there is a resident Cyprus Embassy in Cairo, which removes the third-country-mission friction many Egyptian applicants hit with other destinations.
• Be honest about the trade-offs. Cyprus is not in the Schengen area, so the permit doesn’t let you travel freely across Europe; the medicals are the strictest of any of our destinations; and bachelor’s graduates get no post-study stay-back — only master’s and PhD graduates do. Many agents advertising “study in Cyprus from Egypt” actually push TRNC (Northern Cyprus) institutions, which the Cyprus Ministry of Education lists as unrecognised. Step-by-step: how to study in Cyprus from Egypt

Cyprus is an institution-assisted route — the university files your entry-permit application with Cyprus’s Civil Registry & Migration Department (CRMD) while you’re still in Egypt. Start about 6–9 months before your intended intake; the permit alone is examined over roughly three months.

Step 1 — Get an offer and have your credentials checked (KYSATS)

Choose an accredited Republic of Cyprus university and apply with your Thanaweya Amma (for a bachelor’s) or your degree and transcripts (for a master’s). Credential recognition runs through KYSATS (Cyprus’s ENIC/NARIC body) or is institution-led. Because Egypt is not an English-medium country, you will need certified translations of your documents — and, critically, Egypt is not a party to the Hague Apostille Convention, so documents need consular legalization, not an apostille.

Step 2 — The university files your entry-permit application

Once you accept your offer, the university submits the entry-permit application to the CRMD on your behalf — you don’t lodge it yourself. You’ll provide consular-legalized and translated documents, proof of funds, a possible bank guarantee, health insurance and a clean criminal record. The CRMD issues an Entry Permit (“Blue Slip”), normally examined over about three months — so apply early.

Step 3 — Get the entry visa in Cairo

After the CRMD approves your Blue Slip, you obtain the national entry visa. The advantage for Egyptians: you apply through the resident Cyprus Embassy in Cairo or VFS Global Cairo — no third-country mission needed. Officially the study entry visa is free of charge; some institutional guides also cite a migration application-form fee of around €55 and possible service charges, so confirm the exact tariff on migration.gov.cy before you pay.

Step 4 — Arrive, register and repeat your medical tests

This is where Cyprus is unusual and strict. You sit a full medical examination — blood tests for HIV, Hepatitis B and C and syphilis, plus a chest X-ray for TB — and these are repeated in Cyprus after arrival for the residence permit. You then apply for the temporary residence permit (~€70, ≈ EGP 3,950), examined over about three months.

Unlike Germany, Cyprus tuition is not free — budget for private-university tuition, living costs, the proof-of-funds balance, insurance, medicals and the residence permit. All EGP figures use 1 EUR ≈ EGP 56.4 (June 2026) — the Egyptian pound has been volatile since the March 2024 float, so re-check before you pay.

Credential verification for Egyptian students (KYSATS, no APS)

There’s a lot of misinformation online, so here’s the truth for Egypt:

• No APS for Cyprus. APS is a Germany-only certificate, and Egypt doesn’t even use it for Germany. Cyprus uses KYSATS (its ENIC/NARIC office) or institution-led recognition. Ignore any agent who tells you to get an “APS for Cyprus”.
• Thanaweya Amma is used for bachelor’s admission; your degree and transcripts for a master’s. Note the new Egyptian Baccalaureate introduced from 2025/26 — confirm how your specific certificate is graded and recognised.
• Certified translations needed. Egypt is Arabic-medium, so your documents need certified translation for Cyprus.
• Consular legalization, not apostille. Egypt is not a Hague Apostille party (as of 2026), so your certificates need consular legalization, not an apostille stamp. This catches many applicants out.

Proof of funds and the bank guarantee

Cyprus has no single published national funds figure, but the working benchmark used by universities to show you can fund your first year is a bank balance of about €7,000 (≈ EGP 395,000). On top of that some institutions require a bank guarantee, which is refundable — not a fee.

Two Egypt-specific points to plan for:

• Avoid the “€800 myth.” Some agents (and even some institutional guides) quote a tiny minimum-balance figure of around €800 to make Cyprus look effortless. Treat that as a bare floor, not a realistic plan — the working benchmark for a credible application is ~€7,000 plus any guarantee. Budget for that, not EGP 45,000.
• Show a clean, verifiable source of funds. Unlike Poland (which refuses Egyptian bank statements outright), Cyprus does not ban Egyptian bank evidence — but your file still has to be clean and traceable, with a clear sponsor.

Strict medicals — what to expect

Cyprus’s medical step is the strictest of any destination we cover, and it catches Egyptian applicants off guard because it happens twice:

• A full medical examination: blood tests for HIV, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and syphilis, plus a chest X-ray for TB.
• These are typically required for the file and repeated in Cyprus after arrival for the residence permit.
• A serious result can affect your permit, so deal with any known condition before you travel and arrive prepared.

This is very different from the UK corridor, where Egyptians need no TB test at all — but Cyprus is the opposite end of the scale.

Why Cyprus study applications get refused — and how we help

Cyprus does not publish a study-visa refusal rate by nationality, so be wary of any agent quoting a “98% success rate” for Cyprus — there is no official figure to base that on. (Egypt’s widely shared Schengen short-stay refusal numbers don’t apply here either, because Cyprus is not in Schengen — they don’t describe your study-permit odds.)

• Falling for TRNC — applying to an unrecognised Northern Cyprus institution thinking it’s the EU Republic.
• Weak or unverifiable proof of funds — under the ~€7,000 benchmark, no guarantee where one is required, or an unclear sponsor.
• Legalization and translation gaps — using an apostille (which Egypt can’t issue) instead of consular legalization, or missing certified translations.
• Medical surprises — not budgeting for, or not preparing for, the full HIV/Hep/syphilis/TB panel.
• Leaving the entry-permit timing too late for the ~three-month CRMD examination before the intake.

• Private-university merit bursaries — University of Nicosia, European University Cyprus and others offer entry scholarships and discounts.
• These are partial awards — Cyprus has no full “tuition + stipend + flights” government scholarship for Egyptians. For fully funded routes, Egyptians are eligible for Stipendium Hungaricum (Hungary, ~200 nominations/year) and Chevening (UK master’s), among others.
