Hungary Student Visa: Requirements and How to Apply
Hungary issues no separate student visa: you apply for a residence permit for studies at a Hungarian mission abroad, and the entry visa comes with the approval. You need an admission letter, paid tuition, insurance, proof of resources and €110. A decision takes 6–9 weeks. The catch: Hungary publishes no fixed funds figure, so the resources file is judged case by case.
Hungary student visa requirements (checklist)
The permit is the Residence permit for studies (applied abroad). You lodge it at a Hungarian embassy or visa centre, the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing (OIF) decides it, and the type-D entry visa comes with the approval. One file, one fee, one decision.
What the file must contain:
- A letter of admission from one of Hungary’s 64 recognised institutions.
- Proof that your tuition, or the agreed first instalment, is paid.
- Proof of sufficient resources for subsistence, accommodation, healthcare and return travel — no fixed sum, see below.
- Health insurance valid in Hungary for the whole stay.
- Proof of accommodation: a dormitory allocation, tenancy agreement or host declaration.
- A valid passport and a recent photograph.
- School-leaving certificate or degree plus transcripts, translated into English or Hungarian. Apostille required: yes — but only South Africa and Morocco issue one; the other seven origins legalise through their foreign ministry.
- Language evidence at the level your university sets; immigration rules set no band.
- Biometrics: facial image, fingerprints and signature, taken when you lodge.
- The €110 fee, paid from abroad.
TB screening is post-arrival: after arrival you complete a Medical within 2 weeks of arrival incl. chest X-ray, blood test, HIV/Hepatitis B/C screening. APS does not apply here — no — and recognition runs through the University + Hungarian Equivalence Centre. The two things that sink genuine African applicants are a thin resources file and a legalisation chain started too late, so begin both before you hold an offer.
Proof of funds — the exact rule
There is no blocked account and no published threshold: No fixed statutory sum — do not invent one. The law asks you to show, from legally acquired income and savings, that you can cover subsistence, accommodation, healthcare and return travel. That discretion cuts both ways — nobody can name the magic number, and the officer decides whether your file convinces.
The accepted mechanisms are Bank statement / sponsor letter / scholarship award: a bank certificate in your own name, a notarised maintenance declaration from a sponsor with proof of their income, or a scholarship award letter such as Stipendium Hungaricum. Build the number from real costs rather than guesswork. Living costs nationally are €500–600 per month, and €600–900 per month in Budapest, so an academic year in the capital is a five-figure euro file once tuition proof, insurance and an airfare are added.
Show a balance held for months, not a lump sum deposited the week before you lodge — an unexplained late deposit reads as borrowed money. The mechanics are in our proof of funds guide, the numbers in the cost of studying in Hungary.
Health insurance
Cover valid in Hungary is mandatory both to enrol and to be granted the permit, with a minimum sum of 30,000 EUR. Two routes exist. A commercial student policy runs about €300 per year. The voluntary public route, a NEAK agreement, is priced as a share of the gross minimum wage of HUF 322,800 per month, which is why the market range spans €25–245 per month. Check your offer letter first: several medical faculties bundle insurance into tuition, and buying a second policy wastes money.
Where Africans apply: embassies and visa centres
The pattern: Hungarian embassies in Abuja, Accra, Nairobi, Cairo, Pretoria; Uganda/Zambia/Zimbabwe via Nairobi/Pretoria. Three of our nine countries have no submission point at home.
Nigeria. Hungarian Embassy Abuja, run by the embassy itself. Consular fees are quoted and payable only in local currency through Zenith Bank, under a fee table republished in 2026, with no euro equivalent.
Ghana. Hungarian Embassy Accra. The fee is charged as the US dollar equivalent, by card or POS only — no cash. You may apply up to three months before travel, and the embassy publishes no processing time.
Kenya. VFS Global Nairobi has been the sole operator for every Hungarian visa category since late 2024. A courier fee applies if you live outside Nairobi. Stipendium Hungaricum awardees pay no visa fee.
Egypt. VFS Cairo handles the study residence permit and D-visa route; the embassy takes other D-visa types directly. A VFS service and biometrics charge is added to the consular fee.
South Africa. Hungarian Embassy Pretoria, quoting the €110 permit fee in local currency. Decisions are standard in a fortnight, extendable, and the embassy advises applying early.
Uganda. No submission point in Kampala. Uganda sits in the Nairobi embassy’s consular district, so you file through VFS Global Nairobi in Kenya; the Kampala liaison office only issues consular certificates.
Zambia. The Hungary Office in Lusaka issues consular certificates only and refers visa matters to the embassy in Pretoria, South Africa.
Zimbabwe. Also handled by Pretoria, whose fee table has been unchanged since early 2025. Book well ahead, and earlier still in peak season.
Morocco. The consular office in Rabat, Souissi, opens two mornings a week and takes card payment only; there is no VFS. Stipendium Hungaricum holders pay nothing for the D visa, but the permit itself still costs €110.
The fee
From abroad you pay €110, and that single charge covers both the residence permit and the type-D entry visa. Inside Hungary the equivalent is HUF 26,000–39,000, depending on whether you file online or in person. Later charges: extension HUF 26,000, replacement card HUF 20,000, an appeal filed in Hungary HUF 47,000, an official certificate HUF 4,000. VFS service charges, legalisation, translations and courier are all extra and none of it is refunded on refusal.
Step-by-step: how to apply for a Hungary student visa
- From autumn 2026: shortlist programmes among the 64 recognised institutions and check each one’s own deadline. Intakes are September, February (some) and the route is Direct / Stipendium Hungaricum portal. Scholarship timing: SH 2026/27 cycle closed 15 Jan 2026 (for Sept 2026 start); 2027/28 cycle not yet published as of 2026-09-08 (expect ~mid-Jan 2027); self-funded rolling to ~June. See Hungarian universities for African students and Hungary scholarships.
- Autumn 2026 to winter 2027: start legalisation. Apostille in South Africa or Morocco; the other seven origins need the foreign-ministry chain, which takes weeks per document.
- Winter to spring 2027: sit any English test your programme sets — typically IELTS 5.5 at bachelor’s, 6 at master’s — and get certified translations. If you studied in English, see Hungary without IELTS.
- Spring 2027: apply, accept your offer, then pay the tuition or first instalment and keep the receipt. It is a required document, not a formality.
- On admission: buy insurance, secure written accommodation, and assemble the resources file — bank certificate, sponsor declaration with income proof, or scholarship letter.
- Late spring 2027: book the embassy or VFS appointment for your country, lodge the application, pay €110, and give your biometrics.
- Wait at home. Answer document requests immediately; the clock runs from the day the file is complete, not the day you lodged.
- On approval: collect the type-D entry visa, travel to Hungary, complete the arrival medical, and collect your residence permit card.
Processing time
Plan for 6–9 weeks from a complete file — the statutory maximum for a residence-permit decision is 60 days from submission, with a further administrative period after biometrics in some missions. Nairobi and the Ugandan files it covers routinely quote the longer end, sometimes more. A missing translation does not pause the wait, it restarts it. For a September 2027 start, submit in late spring 2027 rather than midsummer.
Common refusal reasons — and how we help
No student-visa refusal rate is published for Hungary: neither the embassies nor OIF break their statistics down by nationality or study purpose, so any figure quoted to you is a Schengen short-stay number, not your odds. What is documented is the grounds — Application or supporting documents contain false, inaccurate, or forged information, Insufficient proof of means of subsistence, accommodation, or return-travel costs, No genuine link between applicant and the stated study purpose or institution, Criminal record, or public-security, public-policy, or public-health concerns, Applicant already holds a study residence permit from another EU member state (non-mobility case), Applicant has a pending asylum/subsidiary-protection claim or holds EU long-term residence status.
Two of those decide most African files: the resources evidence and the genuineness of the study purpose. Before you submit, we check that the sponsor’s declaration matches their documented income, that the legalisation route is right for your country, that the name spelling is identical on passport, certificates and admission letter, and that your programme reads as a logical next step from your transcript. If anyone promises you a guaranteed permit, read how to spot a fake agent first.

Working during and after your studies
Term-time work is capped at 30 hours/week, and a separate work permit is needed: no. Outside term you may work 90 days (or 66 working days) full-time per year. Pay is anchored to a minimum wage of HUF 322,800 per month, so part-time earnings cover some living costs but not tuition. After graduating you can apply for the Residence permit for job search: 9 months after a bachelor’s, 9 after a master’s, 9 after a PhD. It is not extendable, and your study years do not count towards the residence period required for permanent residence. More in our guide to studying in Hungary.

What works in your favour
- One application does both jobs: the Residence permit for studies (applied abroad) carries the entry visa, costs €110 and is decided in 6–9 weeks.
- There is no separate recognition agency step: an APS certificate is not required (no), and your qualification is assessed by the University + Hungarian Equivalence Centre.
- Funds can come from more than your own account: the accepted proof is a Bank statement / sponsor letter / scholarship award, so a sponsor or a scholarship letter carries the file.
- Work is built into the permit: 30 hours/week in term and 90 days (or 66 working days) full-time per year in the holidays, with a separate work permit needed: no.
- Health screening does not gate the application: TB testing is post-arrival, and the Medical within 2 weeks of arrival incl. chest X-ray, blood test, HIV/Hepatitis B/C screening comes after you land.
The honest downsides
- Since 2024 a study permit no longer carries family members. If you have a spouse or children, they cannot join you on your permit as they could under the old law.
- The job-search window is short: 9 months, not extendable, in a labour market that mostly works in Hungarian.
- Three origins have no Hungarian submission point at home. Uganda files through Nairobi, Zambia and Zimbabwe through Pretoria, which adds travel and courier costs before any decision.
- Some cohorts are very small — 11 Zambians against 1,167 Nigerians — and Zambia and Zimbabwe do not appear on the Stipendium Hungaricum partner list at all, so the scholarship route may be closed to you.
- Medicine is priced in dollars at US$16,900–20,900 per year, and no fixed funds figure means you cannot know in advance whether your bank file will satisfy the officer.
Our core guidance is free, funded by university commission when you enrol: programme shortlisting across the 64 recognised institutions, deadline mapping against your legalisation timeline, and a document review before you book the appointment. We vet the resources file, the insurance wording and the translations — the three things that decide Hungarian applications. Premium Placement is optional and paid, for applicants who want the whole file assembled and tracked. We never sell guaranteed admission or permits.
How to apply for a Hungary student residence permit from Africa
-
Shortlist programmes and check deadlines
Choose programmes among Hungary's recognised institutions. Most take direct applications; Stipendium Hungaricum applicants use the scholarship portal, whose 2027/28 call is not yet published.
-
Start document legalisation
Apostille your certificates if you are in South Africa or Morocco. The other seven origins use a foreign-ministry legalisation chain, which takes several weeks per document.
-
Sit your English test and translate documents
Take any English test your programme requires and obtain certified English or Hungarian translations of your school-leaving certificate or degree and transcripts.
-
Accept the offer and pay tuition
Accept your admission, pay the tuition fee or agreed first instalment, and keep the receipt. Proof of payment is a required document in the permit file.
-
Buy insurance and build the resources file
Take out health insurance valid in Hungary for the whole stay, secure written accommodation, and assemble a bank certificate, sponsor declaration, or scholarship letter.
-
Lodge the application and give biometrics
Book the embassy or visa centre appointment for your country, submit the residence permit application, pay the fee, and provide facial image, fingerprints and signature.
-
Wait at home for the decision
The decision period runs from the day your file is complete. Answer any request for documents immediately, because a late translation restarts the wait rather than pausing it.
-
Travel and collect the permit card
On approval, collect the type-D entry visa, travel to Hungary, complete the post-arrival medical, and collect your residence permit card.
Frequently asked questions
Hungary grants a residence permit for studies, and it includes the entry visa. You need an admission letter from a recognised institution, proof of paid tuition, comprehensive health insurance, proof of sufficient resources, accommodation evidence, a valid passport and photo, legalised and translated certificates, biometrics, and the €110 fee paid abroad.
There is no fixed sum, and anyone quoting one is guessing: No fixed statutory sum — do not invent one. You must evidence subsistence, accommodation, healthcare and return travel through a bank certificate, a sponsor's notarised declaration with proof of income, or a scholarship award. Build the figure from real costs of €500–600 per month, more in Budapest.
€110 when you apply from abroad, covering both the residence permit and the type-D entry visa. Filed inside Hungary instead, the same permit costs HUF 26,000–39,000. Renewals cost HUF 26,000. VFS service charges, translations and legalisation are extra and not refunded.
6–9 weeks, counted from the day your file is complete rather than the day you lodged it. The statutory maximum for a decision is 60 days from submission. Nairobi and the Ugandan applications it handles often take the longer end, so submit in late spring for a September start.
Nigerians apply at the Hungarian Embassy in Abuja, which takes fees only in local currency by bank transfer. Ghanaians apply at the Hungarian Embassy in Accra, by card only, with no cash accepted. Kenyans go through VFS Global Nairobi, the sole operator for all Hungarian visa categories, with a courier option outside Nairobi.
No consular interview is published as a required step. Officers can still question you when you lodge, and the ground they are testing is whether there is a genuine link between you and the programme you have chosen. Some universities run their own entrance exams or interviews at admission stage, before the permit application begins.
Yes. You may work 30 hours/week during term with no separate work permit, and 90 days (or 66 working days) full-time per year outside term. After graduating you can apply for a job-search permit of 9 months, which cannot be extended. Study years do not count towards permanent residence.
The Stipendium Hungaricum call for 2027/28 was not published as of September 2026; only the 2026/27 cycle is live, and the pattern points to a portal opening in late 2026 and a deadline around mid-January 2027. Hungary's minimum wage of HUF 322,800 per month is also due another decreed increase, which lifts the public insurance premium.
