Foundation and Preparatory Courses in Hungary

Who needs a preparatory year in Hungary — and who doesn’t

Hungary has no state pre-university year. Act CCIV of 2011, Article 40, makes a passed upper-secondary leaving examination the general admission requirement, and a foreign certificate is tested on one question: does it entitle its holder to university admission at home? There is no supplementary examination and no bridging year of the German or Austrian type.

The University of Pécs country schedule sets the mainstream reading. Nigeria and Ghana: WASSCE or NECO, six subjects including English and mathematics at A1–C6, with the Ghanaian certificate also meeting Ghana’s own university entrance criteria. Kenya: KCSE at a mean grade of at least C+. Egypt: Thanaweya Amma, academic stream only — technical and vocational streams are refused. South Africa: the National Senior Certificate, Umalusi or IEB, stating that you meet South Africa’s own minimum for bachelor’s admission. Morocco: the Attestation du Baccalauréat in a science or letters stream, the technical baccalauréat refused. Uganda’s UACE, Zambia’s ECZ Grade 12 and Zimbabwe’s ZIMSEC are not itemised and fall under the same home-country test, judged by the admitting university.

If your certificate clears that bar and your English reaches IELTS 5.5, skip the preparatory year — it costs a year and earns no degree credit. Three groups do need one: applicants heading for a Hungarian-taught degree without B2 Hungarian, applicants below B2 English, and applicants whose grades fall short of a particular university’s bar. Pécs adds that a foundation year strengthens a Nigerian file — a recommendation, not a condition of entry.

The preparatory routes in Hungary

The Hungarian language preparatory year, előkészítő magyar nyelvi képzés, runs 10 months and costs €3,500–5,500 per programme. It is for applicants admitted to a Hungarian-taught bachelor’s, master’s or one-tier programme who do not hold B2 Hungarian, and it is compulsory for Stipendium Hungaricum holders selected for a Hungarian-taught degree. It ends in written and oral examinations certifying B2 Hungarian and entry the following academic year to a Hungarian-taught degree. Providers are the Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences, the University of Pécs and other Stipendium Hungaricum host institutions. Stipendium Hungaricum states plainly that completing it carries no entitlement to switch to an English-taught programme.

The institutional foundation semester is 6 months in engineering, IT, music or dance, and it is free because the Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship covers it. You cannot apply for it. The host institution imposes it during the entrance evaluation, only on applicants it has already selected, so you discover the requirement inside your admission decision. It leads to the English-taught degree at the same university with no re-application, and it is not sold to self-financed applicants.

The private pathway programme is the only route you can choose for yourself. Budapest International College runs three tracks — an intensive one-semester university foundation, a two-semester professional track for engineering, IT and science, and a two-semester English track — over 12 months at €3,000–4,200 per semester, so a two-semester track bills that fee twice. It is built for self-financed applicants whose grades, mathematics or English fall short of a university’s direct-entry bar, and for applicants below B2 English. Progression runs to a partner university under the provider’s own arrangement, not under a national rule, and the fee page carries no 2026/27 dating — treat the price as an estimate and confirm it in writing before you pay.

Keep the three apart. None is a state bridging year, and none creates a place at a university that has not already offered you one: the language year converts a Hungarian-taught offer, the foundation semester converts an English-taught offer, and the private pathway rests on a commercial progression agreement you should read before signing.

Learning the language before the degree

The language year takes a beginner to B2 Hungarian over 10 months for €3,500–5,500 per programme. It runs as two semesters of intensive classes, ends in written and oral examinations, and adds field-specific language for medicine, humanities, natural sciences, business or agriculture. Application fees sit on top: €100 at the Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences and €140–300 at the University of Pécs, which also charges separately for coursebooks. Stipendium Hungaricum holders pay nothing for the course itself.

Almost none of our readers need it. The language year attaches to Hungarian-taught degrees only, and the English-taught programmes our students apply to require no Hungarian at any level. What those programmes require is English. The national floor is IELTS 5.5 at bachelor’s and 6 at master’s; Corvinus University of Budapest asks 6 and Budapest University of Technology and Economics 5. Can you get a visa for a preparatory course?

Yes, when a higher education institution runs the course. The residence permit for the purpose of studies expressly covers preparatory courses organised by higher education institutions, so a Hungarian language year or an institutional foundation year is a valid purpose of stay on its own. It is issued for at least a year, or the length of the training if shorter, to a maximum of three. The conditions are the language knowledge needed for the studies, sufficient funds, accommodation, health insurance and a travel document valid at least three months beyond the permit. You apply through the Enter Hungary platform to the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing; from abroad the permit is €110 and takes 6 to 9 weeks.

Two catches decide most cases. A permit held for a preparatory course is extended only if you have been admitted to a state-recognised higher education institution and prove it with an admission certificate — the preparatory year has to convert into a degree place. And a course at a private provider that is not itself a state-recognised institution does not qualify under this heading. The full document set is on our Hungary student visa requirements page.

What a preparatory year costs

Three lines make the year. The course: €3,500–5,500 per programme for the Hungarian language year, €3,000–4,200 per semester for the private pathway, and free for the institutional foundation semester the scholarship covers. Living costs: €500–600 per month nationally, €600–900 per month in Budapest where the private pathway sits, €700–900 per month in Gödöllő and €700–900 per month in Pécs. Health cover is €300 per year on a private student policy, which needs at least 30,000 EUR of cover for the visa file. Add the permit at €110 and the institution’s application fee.

How to apply for a foundation or preparatory course

1. Test your own file first. Read your certificate against the admitting university’s published criteria and the national English floor of IELTS 5.5. If both clear, apply straight to a bachelor’s.
2. Pick the route that matches the gap. Hungarian-taught degree without B2 Hungarian: the language year. Engineering, IT, music or dance where the university flags your subject preparation: the foundation semester, which you cannot request. Grades or English short: the private pathway.
3. Prepare the documents. Apostille required — yes — on your certificate and transcript, with a certified translation. Admission recognition is the university’s decision; formal recognition is issued by the Hungarian Equivalence and Information Centre of the Educational Authority.
4. Apply through the right door: Direct to the higher education institution running the course, through the same online admission system as its degrees; Stipendium Hungaricum preparatory places through apply.stipendiumhungaricum.hu. Private pathway providers admit directly.
5. Work to the deadline: 15 January 2027, 14:00 CET for the Stipendium Hungaricum preparatory course; 30 June 2027 for the self-financed University of Pecs preparatory year with a 1 September 2027 start; institutional foundation semesters carry no separate deadline because they are imposed inside the degree admission decision.
6. Sit whatever the provider sets. Pathway providers test English and mathematics at entry; the foundation semester needs nothing extra, because it arrives with your admission decision.
7. Pay the application fee and first instalment, then collect the letter naming the preparatory course as your purpose of stay.
8. File the residence permit through Enter Hungary at €110, at Hungarian embassies in Abuja, Accra, Nairobi, Cairo, Pretoria; Uganda/Zambia/Zimbabwe via Nairobi/Pretoria, allowing 6 to 9 weeks. Biometrics at the embassy; the medical after arrival.

After the preparatory year

The language year ends in written and oral examinations certifying B2 Hungarian, and entry follows the next academic year to a Hungarian-taught degree at the host university or another Hungarian university — not to an English-taught one. The institutional foundation semester leads to the English-taught degree at the same university with no separate re-application. The private pathway progresses you to a partner university under the provider’s own arrangement, so the guarantee is the provider’s, not the state’s. In every case your residence permit is only extended on proof of admission to a state-recognised institution.
