What a bachelor’s degree in Hungary looks like

The local qualification is Alapkepzes — alapfokozat (BA / BSc); the professions run as osztatlan mesterkepzes (one-tier master's). It runs 3 to 4 years and carries 180 ECTS credits, the same Bologna measure used across the EU, which makes the degree readable to admissions offices and employers abroad. Medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, veterinary science, law and architecture are not bachelor’s degrees at all; they are one-tier programmes that run considerably longer and are the only entry route to those professions.

Teaching starts in September, February. The autumn intake carries almost every English-taught programme; the spring intake is far smaller. Plan for September and treat February as a fallback, not a parallel option.

English-taught provision is real but uneven: 36 bachelor’s programmes at the University of Debrecen, 13 at Budapest University of Technology and Economics, 13 at the Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences, 10 at the University of Miskolc and 8 at Óbuda University. Hungarian-taught degrees need B2 Hungarian, reached through a preparatory course of 10 months costing €3,500–5,500 per programme.

Can you enter with WASSCE, KCSE, NSC or the Bac?

Yes, and directly. Act CCIV of 2011 makes a passed upper-secondary school-leaving examination the general admission requirement, and for a foreign certificate the test is whether it entitles its holder to higher-education admission in the country that issued it. Hungary operates no state pre-university bridging year and has no Studienkolleg or Vorstudienlehrgang equivalent. If your certificate opens a university at home, it opens a Hungarian university.

The University of Pécs country schedule sets the reading most institutions follow. Nigerian applicants use WASSCE or NECO, six subjects including English and mathematics; Ghanaians use WASSCE on the same pattern, and the certificate must meet Ghanaian university entrance criteria; Kenyans use KCSE at the stated mean grade, with eligibility for university admission in Kenya.

Egypt is narrower: Thanaweya Amma is accepted from the academic stream only, and technical and vocational streams are refused. South Africans use the National Senior Certificate, Umalusi or IEB, which must state that the holder meets the minimum requirements for bachelor’s admission in South Africa. Moroccans use the Attestation du Baccalauréat in a science or letters stream; the technical baccalauréat is refused. Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe are not itemised and fall under the general home-country-access rule, assessed by the admitting university.

The filter that removes people is the programme entrance examination. Corvinus sets a written mathematics test for economics, business and data science, and interviews for communications and international relations; every medical faculty examines biology and chemistry. Recognition for admission is the university’s own decision; formal recognition of the qualification is issued by the University + Hungarian Equivalence Centre. How much a bachelor’s costs in Hungary

Public universities charge non-EU bachelor’s students €3,000–8,000 per year; private institutions charge €5,000–9,800 per year. No national semester or registration fee sits on top. Application fees are separate and non-refundable: €95 at Corvinus, €100 at the Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences, €150 at Miskolc and US$150 at Debrecen.

Most of the low-looking fees are quoted per semester, so double them before you compare two offers. The agriculture university bills €1,500–2,500 per semester, the University of Szeged €1,800–3,500 per semester and the University of Pécs €2,200–4,500 per semester, while Corvinus quotes €6,000–6,600 per year and the University of Pannonia €3,000–4,000 per year. Hungarian institutions bill in euros or US dollars, so check the currency as well as the unit.

Living costs run €500–600 per month nationally, with Budapest at €600–900 per month and Miskolc at €450–600 per month. English requirements for a bachelor’s

The national floor at bachelor’s level is IELTS 5.5, and the universities sit close to it. Budapest University of Technology and Economics asks 5, the lowest published band in the country. Eötvös Loránd University, Debrecen, Óbuda, Széchenyi István and Pannonia ask 5.5; Corvinus, the agriculture university, Miskolc and Pécs ask 6. The University of Szeged publishes no bachelor’s band, so ask the faculty directly.

TOEFL iBT is accepted wherever IELTS is, from 46 at Eötvös Loránd and 66 at Széchenyi István to 79 at the agriculture university and 90 at Pécs. Debrecen accepts a proctored B2 certificate instead and waives the test for applicants whose schooling was in English, which is the most useful exemption on this page for West and East African applicants. Universities to look at for a bachelor’s

The Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences in Gödöllő is the cheapest serious option at €1,500–2,500 per semester across 13 English-taught bachelor’s programmes, in a town where students spend €700–900 per month and dormitory rooms cost €120–180 per month.

The University of Szeged charges €1,800–3,500 per semester and ranks #633 (QS 2027). The University of Debrecen is the largest English-taught provider in the country, with 36 bachelor’s programmes at US$6,000–10,000 per year and a rank of #563 (QS 2026).

Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest bills €2,000–4,300 per semester and ranks #584 (QS 2026). The University of Pécs charges €2,200–4,500 per semester and publishes the country-by-country entry schedule other universities lean on.

Budapest University of Technology and Economics is the engineering address, with 13 English-taught bachelor’s at €3,200–3,500 per semester, and Óbuda University offers 8 at €2,700–3,200 per semester. Corvinus is the business school at €6,000–6,600 per year, ranked 401–450 (Business & Management Studies) (QS 2026).

In the cheaper towns, the University of Miskolc charges €2,400–3,000 per semester and Széchenyi István University in Győr €3,400–6,800 per year, where living costs are €400–650 per month. The University of Pannonia in Veszprém quotes by the year at €3,000–4,000 per year, in a town costing €450–650 per month, which makes it the simplest annual bill on this list to compare. How to apply for a bachelor’s in Hungary

1. Choose programmes and check each one for an entrance examination or interview before you pay a fee.
2. Legalise and translate first: an apostille is required (yes), and certified translations of your certificate and transcripts take weeks.
3. Apply through the right portal. Direct to the university's own online admission system, in most cases a DreamApply instance (apply.elte.hu, corvinus-university.dreamapply.com, the University of Debrecen CCIE portal, international.pte.hu). The central felvi.hu system run by the Educational Authority handles only Hungarian-language state programmes and is not the route for foreign-language programmes. Stipendium Hungaricum applicants apply through apply.stipendiumhungaricum.hu, which also serves as the university application.
4. Work to the deadline that applies to you. For the September 2027 start the mainstream university deadline is mid-June 2027 (University of Debrecen 15 June; University of Pecs 30 June; Corvinus requires language certificates by 1 August), with medicine and dentistry closing earlier at 15 May 2027. The February 2028 start closes around 1 November 2027. Stipendium Hungaricum closes 15 January 2027, 14:00 CET — one fixed national date for all levels.
5. Prove your English with IELTS 5.5 or better, a TOEFL score, or a proctored B2 certificate where accepted.
6. Sit the examination, accept the offer and pay the tuition instalment. Keep the receipt for the permit file.

After the bachelor’s: master’s or work?

A Hungarian bachelor’s leads two ways. The Residence permit for job search gives you 9 months after graduation to find work, and it is not extendable. Study time does not count towards the three years needed for permanent residence, so that window is where a Hungarian career either starts or does not.

The other way is a master’s, which runs 1 to 2 years for 120 ECTS at €5,000–8,000 per year in the public sector. Admission is credit-based rather than grade-based, and a Hungarian bachelor’s already carries the subject credits a Hungarian master’s asks for. See master’s degrees in Hungary.
