Study in Spain from Ghana: entry, visa and costs

Is Spain a good choice from Ghana?

Spain is cheap to study in and slow to enter. Public bachelor’s fees run €757–8,186 per year, and the spread is regional: Andalucía bills non-EU students at the national rate, Madrid applies the highest tier. Living costs are €700–1,200 per month, with insurance at €480–840 per year and no health surcharge of the UK kind.

Work rights are wide: up to 30 hours/week with no separate permit, then 24 months on the job-search permit. The catch is recognition. Ghana has no reciprocity agreement with Spain, so your WASSCE must be homologated and converted into a Spanish admission mark before any preinscripción. Entry with the WASSCE

There is no direct entry. The WASSCE (+ BECE) issued by WAEC Ghana is not on Spain’s reciprocity list, so two bodies decide your file: the Ministerio de Educación homologates it to the Spanish título de Bachiller, and UNEDasiss issues the acreditación that carries your admission mark. Register at UNEDasiss. PCE subject exams are effectively compulsory for Ghanaian applicants, because the modalidad de bachillerato comes from the exams rather than from your WAEC grades.

Carlos III, Complutense, the University of Barcelona, UPC and the University of Granada set out the same sequence: Complutense advises at least four PCE subjects, Barcelona weights the homologated average at 0.6 against 0.4 for the exam. Where grades are weak, the UC3M International Foundation Program costs €8,500 per programme over 12 months, with conditional progression. English-taught degrees start near IELTS 5.5. The student visa from Ghana

The route is split: BLS International in Accra or Kumasi takes your submission and biometrics, and the Spanish Embassy in Accra decides. The fee is the centrally fixed €90 national rate, collected by BLS in cash with its own service charge on top. Processing is quoted as 15–45 calendar days. You must evidence €600 per month for the whole stay, set at 100% of the IPREM.

There is no blocked account: bank statements, a scholarship award letter, a work contract or a sponsor’s toma a cargo undertaking are all accepted. A TB test is required, plus a medical certificate for a long course. Ghana issues no apostille: certificates are authenticated by WAEC or the Ministry of Education, legalised by Foreign Affairs in Accra, then by the Spanish embassy. Budget in four blocks. Public tuition is €757–8,186 per year for a bachelor’s and €5,044–10,153 per year for a master’s; private universities begin at €10,380–26,500 per year and medicine at €8,186–21,830 per year. Add a one-off registration charge of €28–140; there is no recurring semester fee.

Apply to a Spanish university from Ghana

  1. Homologate the WASSCE

    Apply to the Ministerio de Educacion for homologacion of the WASSCE to the Spanish titulo de Bachiller. This is the access right and should be opened well before any university deadline.

  2. Register with UNEDasiss and sit PCE exams

    Register for the UNEDasiss acreditacion and enter at least four PCE subject exams. They set your modalidad de bachillerato and your admission mark on the Spanish scale.

  3. Apply to universities

    Apply through the Distrito Unico of the relevant autonomous community or direct to the university. Spain runs no national portal and regional access rules differ.

  4. Prove language level

    Provide IELTS or a medium-of-instruction letter for an English-taught degree, or B2 Spanish evidence such as DELE for a Spanish-taught one. Each university sets its own floor.

  5. Legalise your documents

    Have certificates authenticated by WAEC or the Ministry of Education, legalised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Accra, then legalised by the Spanish embassy. Ghana issues no apostille.

  6. Assemble the visa file

    Collect the admission letter, visa-compliant health insurance, the TB test and medical certificate, and funds evidence of €600 per month for the full stay.

  7. Submit through BLS in Accra or Kumasi

    Book a BLS appointment, give biometrics and pay the fee in cash. BLS forwards the file to the Spanish Embassy in Accra, which decides within 15 to 45 calendar days.

  8. Apply for the TIE after arrival

    Within one month of arriving in Spain, apply for the TIE foreigner ID card. First issuance costs €16.08 and it is mandatory for any stay over six months.

The minimum wage is €1,221 per month a month over 14 payments. It covers part of your living costs, not tuition and Madrid rent together.

Nothing is confirmed yet. The IPREM, which sets the €600 per month a month proof-of-funds baseline, stayed frozen through 2026 because no national budget was passed, and as of September 2026 no 2027 figure has been published. Plan on €600 per month a month and expect the confirmation to come late in the cycle.
