From Kenya you need a university offer and a CAS, then the Student visa: £558, the health surcharge of £776 per year, biometrics at a VFS Global centre and a TB test in Nairobi. You must also show £10,539–13,761 on 28-day bank statements or an official sponsor letter. The KCSE on its own does not reach year one of a UK degree.
Is the UK a good choice from Kenya?
Teaching is in English and so is Kenyan schooling, so a language test is often avoidable. The UK held 685,565 international students in 2024/25. Fees are £9,000–30,000 per year for a taught master’s and £11,400–38,000 per year for a bachelor’s, against living costs of £1,171–1,529 per month; the cost of studying in the UK page sets out the year in full.
Kenyan school grading runs on a 12-point A–E scale, with C+ (7 points) as the cut-off for degree entry. The catch is at undergraduate level: the KCSE is not accepted on its own for year one at most universities, so a first degree usually starts with a foundation year at £16,995–26,000 per year. Entry with the KCSE
Oxford states that the KCSE does not meet its undergraduate admissions requirements; LSE does not accept it as a standalone qualification. The University of Edinburgh normally requires its one-year International Foundation Programme, and the University of Manchester a recognised foundation year, available through NCUK in Nairobi. The University of Glasgow is the exception, mapping KCSE grades onto A-level bands for direct entry.
A strong KCSE English grade is accepted in place of IELTS at Sheffield and Leeds; otherwise the floor is 6 for bachelor’s and 6.5 for master’s. Undergraduate applications go through UCAS, with a deadline of 13 January 2027 (18:00 UK time), or 15 October 2026 for Oxford, Cambridge and most medicine, dentistry and veterinary courses.
The student visa from Kenya
You apply online on GOV.UK and give biometrics at VFS Global in Nairobi, the Mombasa Premium Lounge or the full-service Eldoret Premium Application Centre that opened in 2026. The £558 fee is payable online by card only, before the appointment, with the £776 per year surcharge. Processing takes 3 weeks as standard for applications made outside the UK.
TB testing happens only at IOM Kenya, 78 UN Crescent, Gigiri, Nairobi, at US$62–107. The money test decides most cases: £10,539–13,761 on 28-day bank statements or an official sponsor letter — see our proof of funds rules. Kenya is not a Hague Apostille party: documents are notarised, then authenticated by the Attorney General and the State Department for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs in Nairobi. UK universities do not ask for it.

- From 1 January 2027 the Graduate Route falls to 18 months for bachelor’s and master’s graduates; only applications made on or before 31 December 2026 keep two years.

Applications made on or before 31 December 2026 still carry two years of post-study work after a bachelor's or master's; applications made on or after 1 January 2027 carry 18 months. Doctoral graduates keep 36 months. The date you apply for the route decides this, not your course end date.
